WHERE YOUR DEGREE MIGHT TAKE YOU
At Escape Studios, we try to prepare you for a wide range of roles within your chosen sector, so you are ready to take advantage of developments within the industry and whatever the future holds. You might not yet know if you would rather work for a big production house, a small start-up or even set up your own studio – so we aim to give you the skill set to follow many paths.
Throughout your degree, we will guide you and help you discover and achieve your dream career. With a combination of industry knowledge and skills development, our degrees are unique. We know this works, and it is reflected in both the success of our Escapees and in the quality of work they’ve produced throughout their studies. No matter which discipline you choose, we will provide an intensive and highly creative learning environment for you to thrive in.
COMPUTER ANIMATIONWhen you hear ‘animation’, you probably think of cartoons. But while that’s still a large part of the industry, animation actually encompasses all moving frames in films, TV, advertising or video games. It’s essentially the art of bringing something to life and moving something that cannot move on its own. Advancements in technology and the boom of the VFX industry have made computer animation one of the fastest-growing careers. As a 3D Artist or Animator, you will learn how to master the latest advancements in animation and bring energy and emotion to inanimate objects.
GAME ARTVideo games are everywhere; players cut across all groups and, by some measure, the industry is bigger than the film industry. The UK has a long history of making world-class video games, with hotspots in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Dundee. Game Artists create visual elements of a game such as environments, characters, objects, textures, materials, lighting and particle effects, and these elements are also in demand in the field of virtual and mixed reality. Whether a game is photo-realistic or heavily stylised, it is the Artist’s job to model and texture the content to achieve the desired result. Our course will give you the key artistic skills required to become a Games Artist, as well as a comprehensive understanding of how the industry works in production, development and distribution of games.
VISUAL EFFECTS (VFX)This field has grown to become a huge global industry, with studios operating in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada, India and the Far East. It’s not just the film and animation industries that are reliant on CG and VFX. They crop up in all sorts of places: TV shows, promotional spots, advertising, video game trailers, music videos, product design and architectural visualisation. This demand for VFX means there is a wide range of career options for VFX Artists. You can choose to specialise in one particular area or work across multiple disciplines. Our VFX degree not only gives you a comprehensive overview of all key skills but also an insight into the industry itself, to fully prepare you for a studio position.

CREATIVE CAREERS BEGIN HERE
Our first undergraduate cohort will be graduating this summer, but our students are already forging a name for themselves in the industry. Here are some of our inspiring students describing what they’ve achieved so far on their journey with Escape Studios, plus some top tips on breaking into the industry.
HAYDN ROFFBA Hons The Art of Video Games (Third year student)
Haydn was introduced to a recruiter from The Mill at our student showcase. Having picked up lots of skills in Tech, FX and sound through his studies, Haydn was fortunate enough to be offered a position as a Technical Art Intern at The Mill.
“I am working in Unreal Engine, making blueprints for projects, re-topologising meshes to get them engine ready and making materials. I got to wear a Mo-Cap suit and even jump in to help out on Pre-Vis projects and an AR filter. I have to say the support I receive at The Mill is unbelievable, and I have learned an incredible amount in the last five months. I am very fortunate to still be working there a while longer as I continue my studies.
Working at The Mill has hugely accelerated my progress and studies. Experience with Perforce and VR has made starting our newest VR project at Escape Studios seem familiar, and allowed me to improve my skills and push myself, rather than get bogged down on new tools and workflows.”
MARIA ROBERTSONBA Hons The Art of Computer Animation (Third year student)
Maria won the Eamon Butler scholarship. She completed a 12-week summer internship animating at London VFX and animation powerhouse The Mill. She worked on live client briefs, including a music video that really helped hone her skills as an Animator.
“The opportunity has been especially helpful with my course in terms of learning how professional projects are developed from start to finish. I was able to listen in on meetings and watch how Directors, Producers and Project Leaders would review work across the different departments. I was also introduced to tools and techniques by the Animators there that I try to incorporate into my workflow now.
“It was an invaluable introduction to working in a studio environment alongside a team of experts. There were also lots of internal events to meet the other employees and discuss the work being done across The Mill's studios worldwide, as well as in the industry in general.”
DANIEL BAIDOOBA Hons The Art of Computer Animation (Third year student)
Daniel started his animation career by interning at King Bee Animation while he was still a first year undergraduate. Later he joined Lipsync Post and worked as a Junior Animator on Show Dogs. He has just finished work as a Junior Animator on the World War 2 movie Hurricane, recently in UK theatres.
“Go to VFX events, where you can directly interact with people. If you know a lot of people in the industry, your chance to find out about new animation positions increases drastically. Keep in touch with people, Artists and Recruiters!”
SHANAE BEDFORDBA Hons The Art of Visual Effects (Third year student)
Shanae is one of our Paul Franklin scholarship winners. She used this to network with the recruitment team at DNEG, securing a summer internship as a runner.
“This opportunity allowed me the chance to network with many Artists, Supervisors and others who worked in the building. It also helped me have a greater understanding of what I wanted to specialise in before starting my second year, which put me a few steps ahead of my peers. Therefore, I was able to start working on projects in class that would help to develop the most necessary skills for when I graduate. Also, as I was surrounded by 3D Artists, I got an idea of what a strong portfolio would be, and what software and soft skills were important in the creative industry, for DNEG in particular.”

> ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We take students who have the talent to succeed in the VFX, games or animation industry, and we know the best way to judge this is by looking at your portfolio, not just a set of academic grades.
All applicants are required to bring a portfolio of creative work along to a Creative Workshop at Escape Studios (see page 39). We look for passionate and committed students, and encourage applications from students with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. While we base our decisions on your Creative Workshop, applicants are normally expected to be predicted a minimum two passes at A-Level or equivalent. We also require GCSE English and Mathematics grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications. If you do not have traditional qualifications but can demonstrate the ability to succeed on the course, we encourage you to apply.
Contact our Student Services team for more information +44 (0)203 553 2744
> INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We are unable to accept students from outside of the EU who require a visa to study in the UK, because we are not a Tier 4 visa sponsor. However, you don’t need to miss out as we also offer a range of short courses. These intensive study programmes are taught over 12 and 18 weeks, so you can apply for a short-term study visa and still get a slice of the Escape experience and kick-start your career. Visit escapestudios.ac.uk for details.
> LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS If your first language is not English, you will need to complete an English language test to demonstrate you have the language skills needed to complete your degree, as all our courses are taught in English. HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES?
> CREATIVE WORKSHOPS Once you’ve applied to study an undergraduate programme, you’ll be invited to a Creative Workshop. There are two tasks at the Creative Workshop, which help us assess your suitability for the course:
1. You’ll be asked to discuss some work from your portfolio with a member of the Escape team so we can understand how you work.
2. You’ll take part in an engaging team exercise.
Unlike an Open Day, our Creative Workshops are specifically for applicants. We genuinely want to find out more about you and your motivation for your chosen subject.
You’ll be able to ask us questions, chat to students and check out the studios. It’s a great opportunity to get detailed information about your course, experience what it’s like to study here, meet other potential students and show us what you’re made of.
MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO MAKE SURE YOU APPLY THROUGH UCAS NO LATER THAN 15TH JANUARY 2020.
START PREPARING A PORTFOLIO THAT WILL DEMONSTRATE YOUR TALENT AND CREATIVITY AT THE CREATIVE WORKSHOP. THERE ARE VIDEOS AND ADVICE TO HELP YOU PREPARE ON OUR WEBSITE.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PORTFOLIO STAND OUT
Probably the most common question that I get asked by prospective students is ‘what do you want to see in a portfolio?’ This is a very reasonable, simple question. I just wish the answer was simple! The short answer is ‘we don’t mind, whatever you want to put in it’, but that’s not very helpful, although it’s true. I guess there are different aspects to the question: what media do you want to see, what are the important features of the portfolio, how will you judge it? So let me try and clarify:
1. We don’t mind what sort of portfolio it is (drawing, painting, digital art, website, video, photography, software, sculpture, etc.).
2. The process is more important than the finished item: what were you aiming to achieve, how did you go about that, how successful do you think it was?
3. We want an insight into the way you think creatively (influences, problem-solving, etc.). What is important is that it’s something you’re passionate about and you’re pleased with it, so don’t just put things in that you think we want to see. We want to understand what you were trying to achieve and how you got there.
Take photography, for example, I think it’s fair to say that if you take enough photos you’ll eventually come up with something that would pass as a piece of art. But if that happened fairly randomly, you won’t be able to repeat it nor will you be able to explain the influences and thinking that went into creating that.
It’s much more important that you can explain why and how you’ve created something than the object itself. Were you trying to emulate something you’d seen and really liked? Were you trying to capture a mood or invoke certain feelings in the viewer? How did you go about trying to achieve your aims, did you experiment or research how to do it? All these are things that give us an insight into your creative process.
If in doubt, get in touch and tell us what you were thinking of including, and we’ll get back to you. It’s more than likely we’ll say ‘that’s fine’, though, because if it’s what you’re proud of and says something about you, then that’s just what we want!

FINANCE – A WORLD THAT DOESN’T COST THE EARTH
> TUITION FEE LOANSOur programme fees are £9,250 per year.
Student loans are the most common way to fund undergraduate study. As a graduate, you don’t start paying anything back until the April after graduation, and you don’t have to make any repayments until your earnings reach a certain threshold (at the time of going to print this is £25,000 for students with a home address in England).
Repayments are automatically deducted from your salary through the tax system, and if your yearly income falls below the threshold, payments are automatically suspended.
For more information, visit the Student Loans Company website: slc.co.uk
> MAINTENANCE LOANS Students studying full-time on an eligible degree programme may also be able to apply for a Maintenance Loan, to help towards living costs while studying. Depending on your household income, you may be able to increase your Maintenance Loan.
For more information, visit the Student Loans Company website: slc.co.uk
> BURSARIESWe offer a range of bursaries for special circumstances.
For more information contact our Admissions team: [email protected]
> WE’RE HERE TO HELP We know that investing in your future is a big decision, and we’re here to help you navigate the student loans system. Come along to a finance talk at one of our Open Days or contact our Applicant Advisors at: [email protected] for advice.

MIDTOWN CAMPUS
HOME OF ESCAPE STUDIOS So apart from the fact you are in the absolute hub of the city – our Midtown campus has it all.
It’s a place like no other: the signature vibrancy of the orange, white and black walls, music that caters to all tastes, oh and not forgetting our pretty cool and accomplished team that’ll guide you on the Escape journey. All this will be sure to unlock those creative minds we know you all have.
But, boring stuff out of the way before we get into the more exciting things.
We are located at 190 High Holborn, super close to Holborn station (central line) or Tottenham Court Road (northern line), but the TfL website will help you out on that.
And that’s about it.
Fun stuff again?
We are part of Pearson College London, too, which means your campus will be shared with Pearson Business School students. This is a really awesome opportunity for you guys to meet students like yourself who are taking different pathways and create your own little student community within the campus.
And what about the studios? They are state-of-the-art to assist your student experience. The only way to succeed in the industry is to fully experience the reality of that industry. We do this by providing you with the exact software, such as Maya, and workstations used by the real pros (you guys one day)!
They’re a bit daunting at first, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
Visit us or take our online virtual tour to see for yourself at: escapestudios.ac.uk/visitus
So you want to know about the Midtown Campus? Let us take you on a journey. Let’s mix it up, and start on the third floor, shall we?
ESCAPE IS AN INNOVATIVE AND STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT WHERE, THANKS TO THE TUTORS’ EXPERTISE AND THE CONNECTIONS WITH THE INDUSTRIES, I COULD EXPERIMENT AND SPECIALISE IN MY IDEAL SECTOR OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS.

STUDENT LIFE IN LONDON
THINGS TO DO? In London? Of course there is, where do we start! First things first... Food glorious food!
Studying and working all day can build up quite an appetite but, luckily for you, Holborn can pretty much satisfy any food craving. Sadly, there are just too many food places to tell you about, so we’ve picked our top 5:
• Is it fast food you want? Check. With a McDonald’s, Burger King and a student favourite, Chicken Cottage, within five minutes, you are sorted and should leave with change for dessert.
• Utilise the perks of being a student and grab yourself a Wasabi as they offer student discounts – just bring along your student card!
• Has the student loan just dropped and you fancy treating yourself to a lavish lunch? Well, Holborn also has options, with two Byron Burger restaurants located within a five-minute walk.
• If you want a money-saver option that isn’t your typical fast food joint, then we’ve got just the place. Ecco is a small Italian pizzeria, humble in size but pretty epic on quality. With pizzas from £3.95, it blows any Dominos out of the water!
• No meal is complete without something sweet, right? Well, you aren’t out of luck, there’s a Krispy Kreme shop round the corner.
SHOPPING IN LONDONDo you need some retail therapy? While we wouldn’t advocate blowing all your money on shopping, if you do want to splash that student loan in moderation, you have two of the most famous stretches of shopping at your doorstep, Oxford Street and Covent Garden. There are shops galore, from Selfridges to a giant Topshop, and we think it’s safe to say you won’t have projects on your mind. Oh, and there’s a Forbidden Planet four minutes walk away. Always a hit with our Escape Students!
For those who seek more than just food and shopping, never fear, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. For instance, London is home to the annual MCM Comic Con, not to mention Escape’s very own VFX, Games and Animation festival – The VFX Festival. Not your thing, either? For all our sports fanatics, we are just a train ride away from top sporting venues, including Wembley, the Olympic Park and Twickenham.
We could go on but that would leave you no research to do!
Worried about paying for all of these trips? Don’t sweat.
If you’re a full-time student, TfL offers student discounts on your Oyster cards. If you live outside the Greater London area and are aged 16-25, you could be eligible for a Young Person’s Railcard, saving you a third on train travel.
Want to know the best part of being a student, too? Student discounts in shops all across the city and different restaurants. It’s a pretty sweet deal.
Let’s take a walk beyond the walls of the Midtown campus and ask the question:
LAURA TOMASETTI VFX Student
LONDON IS A REALLY NICE BIG CITY THAT OFFERS A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES. IT’S THE SITE OF A LOT OF VFX COMPANIES, SO IT GIVES ME THE CHANCE TO JUMP INTO COMPANIES AS SOON AS I’VE FINISHED MY SHOWREEL.

E STUDENT EXPERIENCE

• Annual Unreal Gaming Tournament• Bus Parties• Evenings With… • Special movie showings (and Q&As
with the people who worked on it)• Events that generally always have free
pizza (now we have your attention)• And much much more…
STUDENT CENTRALPCSA societies and clubs not doing it for you? Never fear, as a student, you’re also part of student central, which is the University of London Students’ Union. What does that mean, we hear you ask? Well, it means you have access to hundreds more clubs and societies that will help extend your group of friends across London. It’s a win-win, really!
PCSA: PEARSON COLLEGE STUDENT ASSOCIATIONFirst things first, they’re the realest. Second, they’ve been established by students for students.
Thanks to the PCSA, we have a host of clubs and societies and even more events for both Pearson Business School and Escape Studios students, including:
• Model United Nations Society• Finance Society• Art• Football Club• Running Club• Freshers Week• Boat Parties• Games Nights
We hope to see you guys in our campus soon and, once you join, if you have any ideas on how to make Escape even better, email [email protected] or just join yourself!

ALTERNATIVES
University of London Housing Services (ULHS) We have enlisted the services of the University of London Housing Services (ULHS) who run a private housing service for students in London. Both current students and those with an offer to study can access these services.
HOW CAN THE ULHS ASSIST PEARSON COLLEGE LONDON STUDENTS?
Helping you find accommodation:The ULHS have registration schemes for private landlords, letting agents, private halls and other providers of private accommodation for students. These accommodation providers advertise their properties and rooms on the ULHS online property database.
Contract checking:Before signing contracts for private accommodation, students can ask one of the Housing Advice Team for assistance. They will give you guidance on what to look out for and to do when you are renting privately and check the contract for unfair clauses, which may cause you problems in your accommodation.
LEGAL ADVICE:The Housing Advice Team is dedicated to supporting students who experience problems in private accommodation and offers advice on a range of issues including deposit disputes, disrepair and problems with letting agents.
* Figure based on 2019 prices – subject to change. Please view our provider’s website for up-to-date information.
ACCOMMODATION
Living in the capital is a hugely rewarding experience, and we want our students to have peace of mind when it comes to accommodation. We have chosen Tufnell House as a reputable partner, and we review them every six months to ensure their standards are of the highest quality, because where you live is as important as where you study! We want you to have a secure, affordable and comfortable place to live, where you’ll also benefit from staying with other Pearson College London students.

N FAQS
> WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BA AND MArt?
Our three pathways are available to study full-time – whether you choose a three year Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a four-year Integrated Master of Arts (MArt). Both prepare you for a future career in your chosen field, but if you stay on for the extra year of the MArt, you’ll learn entrepreneurial skills, too. You’ll spend the year running your own studio, just as if it was a commercial venture (with support and guidance from us, of course). You can apply for either the BA or the MArt from the start.
> WHAT ARE THE JOB PROSPECTS AFTER AN ESCAPE STUDIOS DEGREE?
There is no way to guarantee a job for everyone, but with our industry links, Talent Development Centre and professional tutors, there are multiple opportunities for students to get their name and work seen and heard. Our courses are developed with industry and designed to teach you the skills you need to succeed in your chosen field. Good Artists are hard to find and the industry is growing fast – we intend to help supply the demand for talent.
> DO APPLICANTS NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE OF USING THE SOFTWARE BEFORE THEY START A DEGREE?
You don’t need any prior knowledge of particular software packages, but it helps if you are used to working on computers. Escape Studios has been training students for more than 15 years and we’ve built our reputation on being able to up-skill people in industry-standard software quickly and effectively. It is more important that you have some creative talent and a passion for the industry – we can teach you the rest.
> CAN I CHANGE MY COURSE ONCE I START?
All undergraduate students study the same modules in the first year. This means that if you decide you want to change discipline, there is an opportunity to switch courses at the end of the first year.
> WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT – PORTFOLIO, ACADEMIC GRADES OR PERSONAL STATEMENT? OR ALL THREE OF THEM?
The portfolio is the most important aspect of the application process – it allows us to see your potential. You’ll be able to discuss your portfolio with a tutor at a Creative Workshop, and we also want to see how you can take feedback and discuss your work critically with others. We read all the personal statements, and that can give us an insight into what drives someone before they come, but it’s much better to speak to you at the Creative Workshop and hear it first-hand. Academic grades are not always the best indicator of how well someone will do on a degree, but they can help us identify if students are able to apply themselves to a task and complete a project.
> DO I NEED TO COME TO AN OPEN DAY?
We encourage all students to attend an Open Day or Taster Day before they apply. It will give you the chance to see the studios and meet our tutors. If you are going to study with us for 3-4 years, it’s a good idea to check we’re right for you and these events are designed to give you a taste of Escape. Taster Days give you the opportunity to spend the day in our studios working on mini projects. Open Days are larger events where you can bring along family and friends. Book your place at: escapestudios.ac.uk/visitus
I USED TO SIT THROUGH THE MOVIE CREDITS AT THE CINEMA TO SEE IF I COULD CATCH ANY OF MY MATES NAMES THERE. THESE DAYS I LOOK FOR THE STUDENTS THAT I'VE TAUGHT AND I FIND THEM IN ALL THE MAJOR MOVIES, IT'S REALLY REWARDING!
