Helping our students to achieve proficiency in a foreign language is not something that can be taken for granted. Instead it is a challenge, and one that language educators are constantly grappling with, as we work to improve our craft and to help our students learn more effectively. Furthermore, traditional ELT methodology has recently come increasingly under scrutiny and teachers have been under the obligation to adapt to new teaching models, which emphasize active, task- based learning and which integrate modern technologies into the classroom. As language professionals, we know that integrating the latest in theory to compliment what we do in practice can be a struggle. However the rewards for both the teacher and the student are very high. New trends in teaching constantly challenge educators and it is only through dialogue with fellow practitioners that educators can themselves learn and develop their professional skills. Conferences, which are strong outlets where we can learn from each other, are obviously a good opportunity to foster a continuing professional dialogue amongst English language teachers.
