Olis Douglas, who is also leaving his trainer position with the Phila- delphia Eagles Professional Footliall team, led Drexel’s Dragons to a three win. three loss, and one tie season record last year and stopped the nine- teen game losing streak. His popu- larity with the team as well as the student body was demonstrated when he was carried off the field on the shoulders of ihe foothall team after a last minute victory against Swarth- more. Also leaving with the Southern drawl of Mr. Douglas will he most of his staff from Ihe Drexel footliall field. .Mr. Hanks and .Mr. Farrell have accepted positions on the staff of the I'niversity of .Arkansas. It leaves Drexel without a Baseball coach as well as a Foolhall director. No replacenients have as yel heen an- nounced. In an informal interview with Mr. Douglas he intimated that his con- tact with the Philadelphia Ijgles was not completely cut. He ho|ie« to gain the experience with a major college team to further his career in the foot, ball field. Connecting this fact with the many limes Greasy Neals, Eagles^ Coach, has commented on Douglas’ ability, conclusions may be drawn that this experience may put Otis Douglas in line for a big job with the Eagle organization later on. A Million and Over

La s t yoar $1,238,000 w a s earned by the 1,238 Drexel Co-op students—

The C ooperative System of Education iounded at the University of Cincinnati in 1906 by Dean Hermann Schneider, w as introduced to the East Coast by Dr. Hollis GodJrey, President of Drexel, who, in January, 1919, formally initiated Cooperative Education at Drexel. Even today, Drexel is the only co llege betw een Boston and Atlanta that offers this combination of classroom theory and practical experience. In the past thirty years, this type of education has proved itself to be the best type. It aifords the student an opportunity to d evelop assurance and ability in his chosen field, and le ssen s the crpprenticeship period through which every college graduate must pass.

Putting this system into effect required a great d eal of hard work, organization an d time. Dr. Kenneth Matheson, successor to Dr. Godfrey, crystallixed the thought of cooperative education. He gave it system, found it friends and m ade it work. To h ead the Cooperative Department, as it w a s then called. Dr. M atheson installed one of D ean Schneider's pupils, Cecil A. Kapp, now Professor of Cooperative Education here.

Of course, it w a s an uphill climb— n ew ideas are not readily accepted and Drexel herself w as n ew (it w as during Dr. Godfrey's administration that Drexel had becom e a degree-grantirvg college). The adverse econom ic condition of the late '20's and early '30's m ade the grade oven steeper.

There wore no great s igns of encouragem ent until the late '30'b, when Drexel finally outgrew her bib and bloomers, and began to assum e a mature status. Industry now recognized the Drexel graduate, accep ted the Undergraduate on the co-op basis and courted our A lm a Mater with purely honorable intentions.

Today, the C ooperative Department has grown in size and effect. Redubbing itself the "Department of Industrial Coordination," it placed co-op students from the Engineering, Business Administration and Home Economics C olleges in som e 430 com panies in the Philadelphia area alono. Also, a good percentage of the co-ops are p laced in com panies in other parts of the country.

The Drexel Co-op Story is not iust a success story; but the prelude to a greater ep ic— one in which w e are all p laying a part.
