Advanced Placement (AP)Advanced Placement (AP) is an internationally recognized enrichment program that offers acceleration and challenge to motivated and gifted students as it prepares them for the transition from high school to university. The program is offered in over 110 countries worldwide. Successful completion of AP exams permits students to obtain credit or advanced placement in first year university courses at over 6,000 colleges and universities around the world.

How does AP fit in with the Alberta High School Program?AP fits in very well with all Alberta High School curriculum requirements. Typically, AP courses build upon the Alberta curriculum and provide additional enrichment. By the end of Grade 12, students in AP courses will have exceeded the Alberta requirements in those areas.

Who should take AP courses?Generally, a mark of 75-80% in a prerequisite course is suggested for students who wish to take an AP course. More important is the student’s motivation and commitment to the importance of education. To be successful, students should have the following characteristics:• enjoy a challenge• have a well-developed work ethic• be self-disciplined and self-motivated• be motivated to achieve• find learning stimulating and exciting• have parental support and approval

13

advanced placement What are the benefits of AP?The Advanced Placement Program:• allows students to study one or more subjects at

an advanced level, depending upon the individual student’s interests and expertise

• provides enrichment and challenge for academically talented and well-motivated students

• helps students develop and practice higher order thinking skills

• assists with transition from high school to post-secondary studies

• helps students prepare for scholarship examinations and AP College Board examinations

• provides students with an opportunity to earn university credits, standing and/or placement while in high school

Dual Credit for High School and University Dual Credit is an authorized Alberta Education program that allows students to obtain post-secondary credits and secondary school credits while still in high school. To many students, dual credit can be perceived as getting a jump start on their post-secondary pursuits, while others see it as a way to explore courses they may not normally take. Students are encouraged to explore and take risks, and can do so with no fiscal investment compared to that of a normal post-secondary course.Successful completion of the courses will result in 5 CTS credits being issued at the high school level, and course credits being issued at the post-secondary level with an accompanying post-secondary transcript.Classes are taught at Paul Kane by a post-secondary instructor. Classes are 3 hours long, once per week for 15 weeks with a total of 45 instructional hours. Classes will be held from 4 – 7 pm, most likely on Tuesdays in semester 2.

Sociology 1000 - Introduction to the Study of Society(5 credits)Pre-requisite – English 20-1 with 60% or English 20-2 with 70%Sociology is the systematic study of human society and social behaviour. The goal of this course is to stimulate your sociological curiosity by encouraging you to ask questions about why people behave the way they do in social groups and how society operates. This course is offered by Norquest College with direct transfer through a post-secondary transfer agreement to many post-secondary institutions including U of A, MacEwan, Concordia, U of C, U of L and others.

Scholarship and Scholar AwardsStudents who are enrolled in an Advanced Placement course usually receive very high marks on the Diploma Examinations. These marks are used to qualify for scholarships.

Research shows that the AP experience can benefit students in several ways when they reach college. At the University of Alberta, an AP mark of 5 is equivalent to 96% and an AP mark of 4 is equivalent to 86%. These percentages can be used in calculating your admission average.

AP helps students qualify for scholarships. Thirty-one percent of colleges and universities look at AP experience when determining scholarships.

What is an AP class like? There is more to AP than you ever imagined. Drive the discussion, discover for yourself how things work, go on unique field trips, perform sophisticated labs and get ready for post-secondary studies.

Will taking AP courses affect extracurricular activities? The time commitment for AP will depend largely on how many AP courses you take. At present, a number of our AP scholars are very involved in many different activities both in and out of school including athletics, music, Students’ Union, clubs, and graduation committees. Because of the flexibility of the program, AP students can be involved in other areas that interest them without jeopardizing their studies.

What are the costs for AP?Paul Kane High School provides AP students with all the materials required in the various courses.

What courses should I take?Grade 10 students are encouraged to enroll in as many AP courses as possible. Students who register in an AP course in one grade are not obligated to remain in the AP stream for all three years. On occasion a student might choose to move into the AP stream in Grade 11 or 12. Generally it is easier to start in AP and move out if necessary than to try to catch up in Grades 11 or 12.

All students must complete either English 30-2 or 30-1 in order to receive a High School Diploma.• Students choosing 10-2 follow the 20-2 and 30-2 course stream through Grade 11 and Grade 12.

* This course stream is ideal for students entering trades or the work force immediately after high school as well as for those students considering post-secondary studies at institutions offering two and three year diploma programs.

• Students choosing 10-1 follow the 20-1 and 30-1 course stream through Grade 11 and Grade 12. * This stream is ideal for students considering post-secondary studies in most colleges and universities.

• The Advanced Placement stream is designed for students who love reading. AP English students write the same final exams as the “-1” students with the additions of the AP English Language exam (in May of Grade 11) and the AP English Literature exam (May of Grade 12).

* It is possible to switch between streams. Students who score 45% or higher in English 10-1 may advance to English 20-2. The same rule applies for students switching from English 20-1 to English 30-2. Students can cross into different streams after successful completion of the same grade level eg 30-2 to 30-1 without needing to complete 20-1. Students may switch into Advanced Placement with teacher and/or Department Head consultation.

In order to receive a Alberta High School Diploma, students must complete a MINIMUM of one Grade 11 Science course (20 or 24 level). A mark of 60% or more in the pre-requisite course is recommended for registration. A mark of 75% is the pre-requisite recommended for Advanced Placement courses. Many post-secondary programs require Grade 12 Science courses.

There are four course routes for Science students at Paul Kane:• The Science 14/24 stream is for students who find Science difficult. Students with 80% in Science

24 can register in Science 10.• The Science 10-20-30 stream is for those students who would like a Grade 12 academic Science

course but who will not be pursuing a career in a Science-related field.• The Biology, Chemistry, Physics courses are for students heading towards college or university or

a specific Science-related field.• The Advanced Placement stream is designed for students who love Biology and\or Chemistry.

Advanced Placement students write the same final exams as the regular courses but with the addition of the AP Biology exam and AP Chemistry exam as applicable (in May of Grade 12).

Students may switch into Advanced Placement with teacher and/or Department Head consultation. ALWAYS check information with the post-secondary institution and the program of your choice. Pre-requisites vary by institution, and institutions occasionally review and change entrance requirements.
