Open Letter from the President I hope all our readers and their fur kids have “survived” this snowy, cold winter, Spring is coming!!!!
While the winter months are quiet on Long Island for conformation & performance events, activity never ceases in
Rescue. As you read on through this edition, you will find more about our club’s efforts to help Springers in need.
Our Club’s AKC events will begin in March and continue through till the fall months, be sure to note the dates included in
this edition of the Newsletter and join us if you can.
Currently we are reaching out to our members and other Springer lovers via this Newsletter, our website,
www.springerspaniel.org and our Facebook page, www.facebook.com (English Springer Spaniel-Rescue) While both the
web site and the Facebook page were originally set up for the Rescue Program, we welcome everyone to visit and we try
to post Club events on both. This Newsletter and past editions as well, are available on the web site.
In conclusion, remember the English Springer Spaniel Club of Long Island, Inc., is a quite unique and diversified group.
Members and friends enjoy their Springers as family members, competitors in Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Agility,
and in the Field, the original purpose for breeding English Springers. I urge each and every one to take some time to
learn about all the fun activities you can enjoy with your Springer.

Upcoming Events
Sunday, March 23, 2014– Designated Specialty with Bronx Kennel Club.
We will be offering Puppy and Veteran Sweeps with Judge Linda Vaughn. Our breed judge is Kathy Lorentzen, a springer breeder. This will be Bronx’s 100th anniversary show, and should be spectacular! The show is March 23, 2014 in Edison NJ, part of the March Madness Cluster with New Brunswick Kennel Club. Big Apple Sporting Society, Garden State Non-Sporting and NJ Herding Group shows are on Thursday night and New Brunswick Kennel Club is Fri and Sat. The site is the NJ Convention and Exposition Center, 97 Sunfield Ave., Edison, NJ. We will have a space ringside for our booth and boutique. Hosting a specialty takes a lot of work. We have the trophies, we have the judges, we will have the entries, we will have the boutique and hospitality goodies…what we need is YOU! Please contact Gail Schuljan at [email protected] if you can join us to help out.

The Best Field Trial Ever! Thank you Ted Lagala for this article!
This year’s 2013 Field Trial that was held in Bath, New York on October 5th and 6th was quite a success. We had one of
the biggest attendances of all the North East Interclub (16 clubs). The All Age Open stake had 47 entries with 8
professionals in attendance. That could very well be the most Pros we have ever had, but certainly within the last 15
years. We also had 29 entries in the All Age Amateur stake and 11 Puppies. Club members Rick Wilhelm with Nate, Rich
Soule with Petter, Damon Licari with Muzie and Ted Lagala with Spirit and Buck all had dogs entered in the event. As
Field Trial Chairman, I would like to thank all the club members that helped make the trial a success: John Lamendola,
Kevin and Carol Dolan, Rick Wilhelm (Field Trial Secretary) Richie Soule and Damon Licari.

Z is on a hiatus from her golf course work. She earned an agility leg in January leaving her with one leg to go for each of her two novice titles. Her love remains Rally. Earlier this month she earned two Excellent A legs for her RE title. She finished 2013 as the top rated Rally Advanced "A" ESS in the country. Piece completed two qualifying agility runs in January with what could have been a difficult seesaw to a jump for the novice fast send. She earned two Rally Novice B legs in February for a RN title. Boy is enjoying playing ball and learning the fundamentals of agility. He enjoyed watching the Westminister agility on TV. In fact, he is our best TV viewer but no couch potato

A Dog’s Simple Promise
(Dedicated to my Sister Gail and Alice)
By Wendy Jennifer Devos
Mommy, please don’t cry. Mommy each day is a gift from God. I love you more than the sunrise! Live fully like I did. My furry head used to rest upon your chest. Live seeing the good in people. How I loved listening to your heartbeat. Live in comforting those you love. Lookin up at you, I could not behold you enough, Live like a furry wonder, My heart overflowing like a waterfall, Be quick to wag your spiritual tail, My tail wagging with pure joy And let the world see that smile I so loved. My soul could not hold the volumes of love back Be free in the moment and see the love in the trees, Oh, how I love you, waterfalls of sparkling devotion. The flowers, the moon and the loon. Mommy, please don’t cry. Love in volumes, so many volumes that you can’t contain it. God has called me home. Mommy, love never dies. Now I’m in heaven, looking down. I’m your furry guardian angel and always know this… When you feel a gentle breeze, please know Love between a woman and a dog is infinite It’s my tail wagging from above. And happy like the morning sun kissing the new day hello. When you see a shooting star, please know Live in a new day of my promise to love you forever. I’m leaping in pure joy at the sight of you. And watch a dog’s simple promise unfold like a rainbow’s rose. From heaven’s garden of wild flowers, I see all. Beautiful Human Mommy, you’re the image of God— So beautiful, so magnificent, so maternal and so good, And when you feel lonely on a cold wintery day,
Know that I will be in the sun’s warmth, licking your face.

Thank you Karen Markiewicz for your article on what it means to work with Rescue.
Let’s all give Karen a big round of applause for the great job she does matching up springers
with their forever homes. Way to go Karen!
I began my relationship with Marge and ESSCLI in the early 90s when our springer, Bob died. I had to have another,
the hole he left was immeasurable. Never having a dog before, Bob taught me how wonderful life could be with a
four-legged furry kid by my side. That is where rescue began for me. I really knew NOTHING about dogs.
So how did I get to this place as ESSCLI-Rescue Adoption/Surrender Coordinator? Good question! I started
interviewing potential adopters a few years ago, and merely suggested a few good fits for adopter/dog combos to
Susan Jonis, the then-present Coordinator. When Susan needed a break from the time consuming position, she
suggested me to fill in. Remember, "I don't know anything about dogs!" Lucky for me, Susan remains just a phone
call away, filling my head with valuable information, and assisting me to make the proper decisions.
Since October 2012, my initiation into the position, through December 2013, ESSCLI has placed 31 springers. This
year, the number is 4, with our petite Rags presently residing with her foster mom, Lori Miller and her daughter Jesse,
in Califon NJ.
The satisfaction I experience is without measure. The rescue friends I have acquired bring me endless joy. And our
Facebook page keeps us all tightly knit. So happy to be here, bringing joy to adopters and loving homes to our
springers in need.
Maybe you should add yourself to our list of volunteers and see what I mean? You can't imagine the rewards.
Here is a list of volunteer positions you could consider: Being a foster home; Helping transport a springer to their new
home; Assisting in set-up at our dog shows and rescue events; Interviewing potential adopters ; helping at an event;
sponsoring a fund-raising project.
Thanks go to all of you that have adopted a springer. You have enriched my life with your compassion to help a
springer in need of a loving home.
Congratulations to the following Springers and their new families:
Indy adopted by Marilyn McHose
Harley/Charlie adopted by Jerry & Debbie Consove
Oliver adopted by Debbie & Bill Winslow
Boo/Casper adopted by Doug Kalloch
Sadie/Maggie adopted by Joe & Maureen Brownfiel
Moose adopted by Sue & Rob Sekelsky
Georgia adopted by Pattie Rockhill
Freckles adopted by Joshua & Janet Walker
Casey adopted by Deborah Maturi
Hashtag/Miss Molly adopted by Lorri & Mitch Cramer
