Tech Enhanced Packaging

Diageo partnered with Norwegian tech company Thinfilm to create a "smart bottle" that can send push notifications to smartphones when they are in close proximity. These notifications could include special promotions and cocktail recipes.

The technology comprises a sensor-embedded electronic label that can detect when a bottle has been opened. (near field communications) It then sends relevant and timely messages to drinkers.

Beyond its marketing capabilities, Diageo says this sort of technology can help the company track bottles across the supply chain to ensure the authenticity of product.

Location Awareness

Pixie Points claim to be the smartest, friendliest, most useful tags in the world, and the only ones that provide precise location.

Each Pixie point contains innovative signaling technology that enables the Pixies to communicate with the Pixie app, and with each other.

Platform reveals the location of any object – even through walls, down to inches. Distance approximately 150’.

Virtual Reality Real World Applications

new ways to learn and shopUK-based Starship created a hyper-real virtual reality cookery simulation using Samsung's virtual reality headset, Gear VR. The technology, called CyberCook, enables users to create recipes from around the world using virtual ingredients in real-time.

“The 19th century had cookery books, the 20th had TV, radio and linear multimedia. Now, for the 21st century, Starship bring you CyberCook. It’s an experience second only to real cooking, a genuine game-changing platform.”

The North Face’s latest campaign, which transports customers to Yosemite National Park as they shop comfortably in the company’s retail stores. Using Google Cardboard, the experience places viewers in the great outdoors, with the ability to look around in any direction, recreating the experience of actually being there.

Two Sides of Visual Recognition

Qualcomm announced last week that it will bundle software capable of recognizing, images of say a city skyline or pictures of your friends and tagging them with their names with its next major chip for mobile devices. The technology, which Qualcomm calls Zeroth, could make sophisticated machine learning more common on mobile devices.

On the flip side…

AVG’s Invisibility Glasses were designed to protect one’s identity from facial recognition software, the glasses feature infrared lights embedded into the frame around the eyes and nose area. When a photo is taken, the bright light created by the LEDs obscure those areas, which are essential to making facial recognition software work.

Race for 5G Has Already Begun

fueled by threats from Google Fiber et al

The 5G network will be service-aware. It has been stated, the network has to be so much smarter because it will have over 50 billion connected devices.

In addition to meeting those needs, 5G should deliver 100 times the speed of 4G networks.

Faster networks with shorter lag times between device communications could help robotics surgery and car-to-car communications take off.
