Changes to Our Calendar as a Result of the New Public Holiday
Please note that Parent Teachers Consultation Day scheduled for Thursday 26th
October will now take place on Wednesday 25th October. This is because it would
have meant the second Thursday in four weeks being missed which would affect
the learning of students who have specialist lessons or examination courses on a
Thursday.
This will also mean that the Elgar Free Dress Day scheduled for Wednesday 25th
October, will now take place on Thursday 26th October. The theme is Halloween:
Dead and red, and there will be prizes for the “Best Dressed” in each year group.
Parents Signing into School
Please can ALL parents sign in when entering the school even if you have your ID badge. This is so that
we know exactly who is in the building in case of fire.
Parent ID Badges
Parents must wear their ID badges around their necks on entry to and while
they are inside the school building. This is for your own children’s security. I
cannot stress the importance of this enough. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated.
FoMCE International Day – Parent Performance
Our International Day takes place on Saturday March 3rd 2018. While that may seem a long way off, I
am giving you our parents ample time to arrange any performances you may want to give on the day. It
would be lovely to have some parents performing on stage that day. If interested, please contact our
Chair of FoMCE Mai Sharawy [email protected]
Friends of Malvern College Egypt Charity Community Quiz Night –
Adults Only!
This takes place on Thursday 19th October from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.
Contact [email protected] directly to enter your team.
If numbers are too few, we will have to cancel this first community
event.
Entry fee per person is 50LE with all money going to FoMCE charities.
New Families
If you have friends or colleagues moving to Cairo or thinking of moving school, please introduce them
to the College admissions team [email protected]
FoMCE Charity Shoe Collection – Clear Out Your Cupboards!
We are collecting old shoes that you no longer want for the
Association for the Protection of the Environment so that children
in their school (and adults) can have shoes to wear. Boxes are in
Early Years, Primary and Secondary School entrances.
Parent Information Session
My thanks to Mrs. Dibb-Holland for delivering the session this
week on English/Phonics in the Early Years and Lower Primary
School. A lot of parents attended and your feedback is always
appreciated.
Next session is on Tuesday 17th October at 8:30am and is a Whole
College Parent Information Session - How we teach Arabic
Please see the key dates below for more sessions.
College Guiding Statements
Our focus guiding statement next week is:
CGS 5: The College respects the natural world and its resources both globally and locally
The College develops individuals who are knowledgeable about the world in which they live. Students
should aspire to be caring individuals with compassion and tolerance for others and an awareness of
environmental issues.
Malvern Qualities
I ask you to discuss these with your children to reinforce what we are trying
to achieve at the College. Next week’s focus is on Curiosity which is below:
Curiosity
Having an inquisitive and investigative attitude.

Duncan Grice
Headmaster
As many of you might know I am passionate about sport and it is important to win matches with
modesty and to learn to lose with grace but it is really important to be good ambassadors for Malvern
College Egypt. This last week I am delighted to hear not only tales of great sportsmanship at the
Swimming Gala at BISC and at the football match against CES but also how well our students behaved
and that it was commented on not only by our staff but the opposition staff as well. This makes me
immensely proud.
The students in 2M have been using an educational portal called Education City which has a wealth of
resources, activities and assessments to support the students in the College. Once logged in, the
students navigate through specific resources which are linked to their previous learning. Each activity is
matched to the student's knowledge and understanding and gives them immediate feedback on their
progress, allowing the teacher to identify any misconceptions immediately.
This week we had a Class Representatives Meeting which was well attended and they were able to
witness our slick fire drill as the fire alarm went off. Some of the key areas that were discussed were the
importance of healthy eating, unnamed high value items that are coming to school and positive use of
WhatsApp in English.
The healthy eating issue I have mentioned before. Unnamed high value items like Apple watches,
IPhones etc. are not needed at school and cause temptation to others and great upset if they get lost or
broken so please ensure that your child does not bring them in to school.
WhatsApp is a great way of communicating in a group situation but it should be written in English.
Messages should be of benefit to others and generally positive i.e. remember that there is a trip
tomorrow so you will need a packed lunch or remember it is swimming tomorrow so you need
Primary School News from Johnnie Kittermaster – Head of Primary
swimming costumes, or remember to bring money in for the charity day. It is not for discussing issues
openly. Please take these issues up on an individual basis with the class teacher.
Birthday Policy:
A birthday celebration at school is always fun and children like to share
their special day with their friends. Bringing a small individual cupcakes
into school is quite acceptable but party bags, crisps, sandwiches, candles
and jellies are not! It is important that you talk to your child’s class
teacher/form teacher before you bring in a birthday cake so that this may
be planned into the day without causing disruptions to lessons and other school activities. Ideally
cupcakes should be brought in to school as this negates the need for a knife to be used.

Student Leadership
Over the last two weeks I have had the enormous pleasure to be involved
in the interviews of a range of Year 10 students who have applied for
positions of responsibility at The College. The articulate and calm manner
in which these young adults conducted themselves is a huge credit to
themselves, their parents and the College. I was delighted at the
references to the College Guiding Statements and the Malvern Qualities. The students gave very
thoughtful suggestions on areas that they see can be improved in the College as well as reflections of
what they feel are the strengths of the student body. On Thursday 12th October we will present our new
student leaders to the Secondary School and then begin a process of training and mentoring for these
young leaders. The College will do all it can to support these passionate and visionary students in
creating an even more fun and vibrant atmosphere within the College.
House Captains
On Tuesday students had their first real opportunity to have a voice in how things are run at MCE. Each
House got to vote on their choices for the positions of House Captains. After some eloquent speeches,
all students in each House cast their votes and the new House Captains will be announced shortly. The
new House Captains will be presented to the school at next week’s student leadership inauguration
ceremony. Students should now begin preparing for the various House competitions in the coming
weeks, from the Swim gala to Lip Sync battle.
House Points
Despite a big push from all students to collect House Points, the leader board has not changed this
week. However, the gap between the 4 Houses has reduced considerably with an average of only a 0.3
points between the top two.

Secondary School News from Wayne Maher – Head of Secondary
The competitive sports season started with a bang last weekend
as our Lion’s Elite Swim team took to the water for the first of the
swim league meets hosted by BISC. Having competed at this
meet last year and coming a respectable 5th, this year we were
determined to do better and we didn’t disappoint! We ranked 3rd
overall and I am delighted with all students for their efforts.
Special congratulations go to the students listed below who
placed in the top 3 in their races.

On Monday the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 16 boys started their New Cairo
School Sports Partnership (NCSSP) league fixtures against CES. Last year we struggled to compete
against a much bigger school, often losing by 5 goals or more. This year, having trained together for a
year, the teams were determined to do much better. Although none of our teams managed to secure a
win, there was a huge improvement from last year. More detailed match reports can be found below.
The U11 boys played a game of three periods losing 2-0. I was pleased with the tenacity in defending
with not many shooting opportunities for either team. The boys worked hard with several near misses
and hit the bar. I was also very pleased with the impeccable behaviour and the maturity the boys
demonstrated. Mr. Bailey
The U13 boys also went down 2-0 to CES. Many of the Malvern qualities were evident throughout,
particularly the amount of resilience and determination showed by each squad member. Hassan
Shoukair was the player of the match with a fine performance in goal. Many formations were tried as
we try to find the best system for our players. Mr. Sussex & Mr. Gale
The girls’ teams are in action on Wednesday against CES and I look forward to reporting on their
success next week. The teams are:
U15 team: Talia Jada, Luana Soliman, Mariam Koura, Farah Farag, Jana Khairy, Mariam Hassan, Zeina
Hani, Jasmine Grice, Haia Selim, Hana El Hawary, Malak Tibar
U13 team: Clara Raouf, Naia El Sherif, Samyah Al Mufidi, Mehraeel Wahba, Sandra Fanous, Hala El
Gebely, Rola El Debakey, Alia Hussein, Salma Badreldin Ahmed, Farida Abouwarda and Clara
Messiha.
Our next fixtures are against TBS. The U11’s host our first fixtures at MCE on Sunday 8th October, U13
Boys and Girls play on Tuesday at TBS and on Thursday, the U16’s also travel to TBS.
Due to the games on Sunday, there will be NO U16 training on Sunday 8th October.
Golf Champions
We are always keen to highlight the success of our students, so we must
also share with you our staffing success! Congratulations to our teachers
golf team of Mr. Grice, Mr. Kittermaster, Mr. Driscoll and Mr. Bailey for
winning the Cairo International Schools Teachers Trophy last weekend.
Starting next week (from 8th Oct) lunch time activities will be happening for
students in the music department, please see the table below to see what
days events are on. Groups have been split to allow students time for lunch.
Over time other groups will be added reflecting the interests of students but
it is hoped that students will use the rooms available to rehearse for the Lip
Sync competition and future competitions the College will hold.

We are also hoping that parents may be interested in setting up a parent choir. We hope that the choir
will perform at key college events, such as the International Day etc.
This will be a group for parents, run by parents. So anyone having ambitions to be a choirmaster please
let me know. I will of course be there to help, but it would be great to extend our musical experiences to
parents as well.

Instrumental Lessons Update:
Final administration details are being resolved. Once everything is in place I
will contact all parents for Year 2 and above offering our instrumental
package. So far this year we already have in place piano, violin, guitar and
vocal teachers. More teachers will be added as student interest demands. I
will keep you updated as soon as I can. Thank you for your patience in this
matter.
I am aware that some very young students wish to have instrumental lessons in school. We offer
lessons to Year 2 and above due to the independence needed to get to lessons on time, follow a
continually changing timetable, and of course practise time at home. Students in school are expected to
check the lesson notice board, arrive at their lesson at least 5 minutes early, bring the correct equipment,
inform their teachers and of course catch up with missed work. We feel that anyone younger than Year
2 would not be able to cope with this.
Students started well last week, with some fun drama, dance and singing
activities. Over the next couple of weeks we will be auditioning for the
main roles in our production of The Wizard of Oz. These auditions will
take place during the CCA time and lunch times if required. I have
several students already asking me to be main roles. It is a delight to see
the enthusiasm of the students. In the auditions the students will be asked
to act and to sing a piece that we teach them in the CCA, so no need to worry at home about this.
Once scripts are given out and roles cast, we do ask that parents help their children learn their lines as
soon as possible. Learning lines early will turn a great performance into a fantastic performance.
I would also like to clarify with parents that those that have signed up for the School Production CCA
will automatically be placed in this CCA again in January, therefore there will only be 2 choices for
School Production students for the new CCA programme. The production is taking place in May, and
we need a consistent cast right from the start. Also as an advance warning, nearer the performance date
there will also be Saturday rehearsals, but plenty of notice for these will be given nearer the time.
