Opera t ing p r inc ip lesOpen Print is a tool for normalizing legacy print streams to transfer of document applications to a new environment in order to benefit from document manufacturing technologies and associated services.

The normalization program enables users to import files in a X format and then generate files in Y format, through VPF, the Open Print pivot format. The formats that are recognized and generated are presented in the pages that follow. We deliver default configuration files with the product for the different protocols according to the following parameters:

• HP-PCL: the default version supported is version 4.• Xerox-Metacode: Remake supports both the On-line mode and the Off-line mode.

Regardless of Metacode format, the configuration parameters are available for all types of structure: Fixed (F), Fixed Blocked (FB), Variable (V), Variable Blocked (VB) and Undefined (U). They may come from different platforms and systems: ANSI, IBMOL, IBMOS, etc.

• Xerox LCDS: the TechLCDS normalization engine is used to normalize the two types of LCDS streams below:

•JDE streams by Xerox printer;•GFRC streams products by the BULL - GCOS7 system.

• AFPDS: the default configuration does not support compressed images, IOCA format and does not take back ACIF indexes.

• DJDE: the default configuration will enable you to retrieve all the streams of this type.

• DynSet: the TechDynset normalization engine can normalize static or dynamic streams generated with Openpage Genlist and Genlist-X. These streams in ASCII or ssf formats are converted in Open Print pivot format.

• Adobe PDF: the TechPdf normalization engine can normalize files containing Bitmap (Type 3), TrueType or Type1 fonts. These fonts can either be embedded (internal to the input stream) or external.

For any other version of these protocols, a specific configuration file and technical analysis will be needed to carry out normalization.

These files are retrieved identically in Virtual Page Format (VPF): they can then be modified and then converted into a new protocol.

N o t e For further information about the Open Print normalization engines, parameters and restrictions, refer to the Open Print Remake Normalization Guide .

Below are the standard processing phases:

Normal i za t ionUnder Open Print Remake, the first processing phase is normalization. Normalization is the process used to convert any print stream (AFP-DS, Xerox Metacode, HP-PCL) into the Open Print pivot format, VPF (Virtual Page Format) so that it can be handled in an Open Print production line.

This transformation is made on the printable stream itself and on the resources associated with this stream that enable the stream to be printed: fonts, images, overlays.

The input file may be in one of the following formats:

• Adobe PDF• AFP-DS• DynSet• HP-PCL• Xerox-Metacode• Xerox LCDS

This icon on the remote control is used to launch normalization.

The parameters of the normalization engines may be entered in the corresponding field that can be accessed from the File > Setup menu by clicking on the Retrieve

button. The available parameters are presented in the Open Print Operating Manual .

The method to use for a normalization is presented in the Open Print Normalization Manual.

EnhancementDuring the enhancement stage, the user may use the graphic interface to change the appearance and content of the normalized document. The user may move, delete or add an information area in the document, change the appearance or representation of information.

All these operations are carried out through a development station that has the same interfaces and operating mode as all the products of the Open Print range. The Open Print Remake application describes the procedure for reading pages in the document and the way in which each one of them is processed.

There are two possible types of document enhancement:

1 Direct enhancement on the VPF file, i.e. directly in the virtual page: changes will then be made only on existing objects (texts, rules, images).

The user can hide or move objects in the application and create an index file in it. This type of enhancement is defined in the StoryBoard tool.

This icon on the remote control is used to start the enhancement process of the virtual page defined in StoryBoard.

2 Enhancement from SGML, i.e. using styles1.

We can add elements, define their layout and positioning. This type of enhancement is defined in the StoryBoard tool and then in the Stylist. The name of this enhanced VPF file, i.e. in VPF format enhanced with additional tags, is defined with the Output File button of the File > Setup menu.

This remote control icon launches the enriching program and therefore the interpretation of the SGML in the VPF file enhanced and defined in Stylist – and therefore composes the final rendered document.

The enhancement engine may be parameterized in the corresponding field that can be accessed from the File > Setup menu by clicking on the Enhancement button. The available parameters are presented in the Open Print Operating Manual .

This phase produces a new document in VPF format, which includes all the modifications, additions or suppressions programmed in the Open Print Remake application. The new document will be transformed into a printable stream during the last phase.

Render ingThe last stage of the process consists in the transformation of the document in VPF format, containing the enhancements defined in the previous phase in a printable stream.

The restoration drivers will carry out this operation by integrating the printing constraints. These constraints are grouped into a sheeting configuration file. This file, which can be entirely parameterized, allows a lot of flexibility in carrying out this phase and enables the program to execute all the final processes related to the document. It describes how the document will be printed: recto verso, two-up, etc.

1.The Open Print specific terminology is presented on page -8.

This phase is common to all the products of the Open Print range. Integrated into the Open Print architecture, Remake is used to associate the converted data to the production chain. The existing documents can then benefit from all the advanced processes such as sorting, grouping, indexing.

The following are the available output peripherals:

• AFP-DS Blanck & WHite and AFP-DS color• GIF• HTML• IJPDS Black & White and IJPDS Color• Metacode (Xerox)• PCL (HP) 4 Black & White and HP-PCL 5e Color• PostScript• SDP (Nipson)• TIFF• VIPP (Xerox)• VPF (Sefas)• VPS (Creo)The format should be selected from among the options proposed in the window of the File > Setup > Output file menu.

The parameters of the rendering engine can be entered in the corresponding field that can be accessed from the File > Setup menu by clicking on the Rendering button. The available parameters are presented in the Open Print Operating Manual .

The Open Print environment uses a specific terminology.

Below are the main keywords:

GROUPA group is a directory that groups a set of applications of the same type. Some of the group’s common resources are shared.

APPLICATIONAn application is a directory that contains a set of resources required to generate a type of document.

RESOURCE

A resource is an element or component of the application (text, graphics, script, substitution table, data stream, images, etc.) used in the different document production phases.

FUNCTIONAL

TREE

The functional tree is the build board for assembling resources. It is an assembly model that organizes the document components.

SGML TAG

A tag is a mark used to identify the nature of an element. Page layout statements will be associated with the tags in the styles after the assembly phase to define the composition.

STYLEA style is a file that contains all the page layout statements associated with a tag.

DOCUMENT A document is the result of the assembly and composition of data.

Organ iza t ion o f resourcesEach application requires various resources, the nature of which depends on the input document and enhancement program. These resources can be indexed tables, selective or iterative conditions, procedures, etc.

Open Print allows the sharing of resources inside applications and application groups. All resources relating to an application are grouped in specific directories. These directories are in their turn grouped in the application directory. Applications that use identical resources share these inside the same group. A common directory is associated with each group: it contains all the directories of applications belonging to the group in question. All the groups are themselves grouped in a single directory that can also contain all the resources common to the application groups.

This hierarchical organization allows the program to look, in a higher level, for a resource that is not available at a given level, by means of common directories.

Descr ip t ion o f the resource a reaResources are created and edited in the upper part of the StoryBoard window. This area presents the component library. This is the list of resources that are to be assembled in order to create the document template. It may be displayed in various modes: large icons, small icons, list and details. Below is the resource area displayed in Detail. mode

Crea t ing resourcesThe right mouse button can be used to create a resource.

The available resources are presented in the pages that follow:

P R O C E D U R EThis resource allows you to define a procedure in which the scripts will be associated. The procedure should be named and placed in the main structure of the tree. The resources placed in the sub-tree of this procedure will be the elements that will become part of the procedure after the code has been generated.

The code generated from the tree automatically retrieves the resources placed in a sub-tree and recognizes them as elements of the procedure. They are placed between the assembly statements PROC and ENDPROC.

I M P O R TA N T ·

• The scripts placed in sub-trees with respect to the procedure object should not contain labels. Select the mode without label from the control panel. See page -17.

• An iterative condition of the "Up till" type cannot be placed in the sub-tree with respect to a “procedure” object.

S C R I P TThis function enables statements or comments to be written directly. The syntax belongs to the assembly language presented in the Open Print Languages Guide. The statements entered will be reproduced as they appear in the program generated from the functional tree.

The assembly statements comprise one or several parameters. Their general syntax is as follows: name of statement (parameter1,parameter2…)

The parameters may be:

1 a simple text, i.e. a sequence of characters between quotes,

2 a variable,

3 an expression, i.e. a combination of variables and texts, the order of which depends on the final text to be edited.

The syntax of an expression is as follows: "text"variable"text"…

Two consecutive variables should be separated by two quotes. Expressions enable fixed and variable texts to be joined at output.Comments may be inserted into the scripts. They are ignored by the program. They should be preceded by two slash marks//.

I M P O R TA N T

• All ASCII characters may be used in input, with the exception of the character FF (hexa 255) which is reserved. The use of this code in input may result in editing incidents. To avoid such incidents, the environment variable op__quote should be positioned when the assembly engine is parameterized. This variable specifies a character that will never be used in input, in place of the FF character.See the description of environment variables on this subject page -9.

• A line cannot exceed 1 Mb in an assembly program.

• The maximum size of a variable is 64 characters.

R e m a r k An on-line help module is available from the script editor and the Code window. It is called by the F1 key of the keyboard when the cursor is positioned on an assembly statement. The on-line help module can also be called from the Help menu.

The right mouse button can be used to select the variables to insert into the script.

These variables are updated after each compilation of the functional tree program.

I M P O R TA N T For their content to be replaced, the variables have to be in quotes in the texts and without quotes in the scripts.

C O N D I T I O NA condition defines a conditional transfer based on the result of a test. The sequence of orders in the setting will be executed if the condition is met. Otherwise, the program goes directly to the next statement. A condition may be iterative or selective, elementary or compound.

• Elementary conditionsThey are expressed as follows: (variable operator expression)

Character strings and numbers are written between quotes whereas numbers are written out directly.

• Compound conditionsThey are composed of a sequence of elementary conditions, each of which is inside parentheses and linked by logical operators: && for "and", || for "or". A compound condition is expressed as follows: (condition) && (condition) || (condition)…

The internal operators of a condition are as follows:

• == or = Equal to• != Different• < Less than• > Greater than• <= or =< Lower than or equal to• >= or => Higher than or equal toOperators can involve character stings as well as numeric values.

This statement recognizes several levels of parentheses:((A=="1") && (B=="2")) || (C=="3")

The variables used in a condition can be inserted automatically by using the Insert variable function from the entry field of the condition editor. See the page -27 of this document on this subject.

• Iterative conditionThis function allows you to insert a loop inside the process.

In the condition editor, the parameters of the condition created should be selected using the radio buttons. The following are the available parameters:

• As Condition Enter the condition required for executing the loop.• Repeat x times Enter the repetition frequency: integer• Up till Condition Enter the loop breakpoint condition

• Selective conditionThis function allows you to add a simple condition to the process.

The required condition should be entered in the Condition field. The syntax is as follows: variable="value"

• variable is the name of the variable that contains the information,• value is the desired information or value.

I M P O R TA N T ·

• A selective condition placed inside a procedure does not generate a goto statement in the code. However, if it is placed outside the procedure, this statement will be automatically generated.

• An iterative condition of the "Up till" type cannot be placed in the sub-tree with respect to a “procedure” type resource.

T E X TThis resource allows you to enter a text in the editing area from an external editor. The text can comprise:

• SGML tags.• Fixed elements that are the texts that come after the tags.• Variables, from a table, message or script. The right mouse button inserts the name of a variable. See the page -27 of this document on this subject.

T A B L EThis function allows you to create an indexed table. This table associates data with an element or a key from the stream.

The right mouse button adds or deletes lines and columns.

The first column contains the key in the stream. The following columns contain the values associated with this key. These values will be called in scripts.

Example: The indexed table above allows you to associate a title, in its long or short form depending on the column number, to the letters M, F or N.

A script will be associated with the table to define the names of the associated variables. The names of the two title variables are civil and civil_short. They can then be called in the texts.

The syntax of the script will take the form below:

itread(civil,TAB_civil,"1",datain.read_client.civil)

itread(civil,TAB_civil,"1",datain.read_client.civil)

G R A P HThis function is used to generate histograms, for one or several series of values, and sectors, for a series of values.

I M P O R TA N T The styles used by the program to generate the graphs use markers that can also be used in the application. If there is a conflict, change the numbers of the markers used.

The histogram or sector type selection is done in the editing area using the dropdown list of the Type field. The drawing on the right-hand side of this field is used to view the type of data representation chosen.
