OSI 2015

The twelfth edition of Open Source India (OSI) has concluded, taking the philosophy and spirit of open source to an all new level... or should we say, to an all new ‘business’ level. Yes, OSI is now just

not an interaction and knowledge-sharing platform. Over the years, the show has evolved to become a strong business platform, where the industry meets the community.

Open Source India 2015 was organised on November 19-20, 2015, at the NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bengaluru. Despite the incessant, unseasonal rains

across the city and in adjoining areas, OSI saw a decent turnout. About 1400 people made it to the event over the two days. Karthik Padmanabhan, executive - cloud ecosystem and developers, IBM Asia Pacific, shares, “OSI 2015 was a good show. We were looking to connect with developers of all levels and we got that opportunity during the show.”

A complete show...Open Source India 2015 saw a mix of IT decision-makers and developers in the audience. Lux Rao, CTO, HP India, has been a key speaker at Open Source India for the past four editions. He says, “I have seen this show growing and evolving. This development was much appreciated by the audience and has been a crowd-puller for the show this year.”

Hands-on dabbling with technologyOpen Source India is now a platform where technology is not only discussed, but practised too. OSI 2015 saw 16 hands-on workshops being conducted in a span of two days. It should be noted that most of the workshops were sold out before the show began. Ganesh Samarthyam, corporate trainer, consultant and author, who has been conducting workshops at Open Source India for two years now, witnessed a huge turnout at his workshop titled, ‘Software Architecture: Principles, Patterns, and Practices’. There’s a huge network of tech professionals associated with Open Source For You magazine, who are approached and encouraged to speak about the latest and the greatest in technologies; they put across their presentations through a ‘Call for papers’ exercise.

Rahul Chopra emphasises, “While our team works extensively to bring in the industry experts for the show, we make equal attempts to reach out to the community and encourage them to participate in the show. This year, we received hundreds of requests from community experts who wanted to speak. Our expert committee then screened their papers and decided on the speakers, keeping in mind the direction of the content decided upon earlier. We strive to make OSI a platform where people can get a glimpse of successful as well as upcoming technological trends for the next year. We want to keep the futuristic approach and, I feel, we succeeded in that too. The IoT track, for instance, was added this year. IoT is one domain which is creating a buzz and open source is poised to rule in it. We got a great response for the IoT track from the audience as well as the speakers.”

OSI 2015 signed off on a positive note, keeping the spirit of open source alive and with the promise to come back in a bigger and better avatar.

previous editions of OSI as well, and I can say that the show is growing with every passing year. About 65-70 people attended my workshop, and they ranged from fresh engineers to experienced professionals. At Open Source India, the audience mix is very interesting. While on the one hand, we get to meet the fresh blood, on the other, the experienced guys bring in the balance to the show. Also, I would like to mention that the show was very well organised.”

Jacob Singh, country head, Acquia, India, who has been a presenter at the show for several editions in the past, appreciated the way OSI 2015 was organised. He says, “This edition’s show witnessed a quality turnout and the workshop I conducted was completely packed. The show was better organised compared to the previous editions. I have been at several international shows and I can vouch that OSI is at par with them. The only thing I feel needs improvement is that there should be a 15-minute break between two sessions. This will give a breather to the audience and will be advantageous for the exhibitors as well.”

The latest in technologyHow is the content of OSI planned, you may ask. Well, there’s a panel of experts in technology involved in the process. The industry and community experts brainstorm to zero in on what should be the direction of the show from the content perspective.

Drupal 8 in a DayThis workshop allowed the attendees to get a thorough introduction to Drupal 8 in one day. Jacob Singh, country head, Acquia, India, talked about the most essential features and concepts of Drupal while taking his audience through a series of hands-on activities. Attendees got an opportunity to get familiar with Drupal terminology and identify how Drupal sites are constructed.

Software Architecture: Principles, Patterns and PracticesThis workshop introduced developers and designers to key topics in software architecture including architectural principles, constraints, non-functional requirements (NFRs), architectural styles and design patterns, viewpoints and perspectives, and architecture tools. A special feature of this workshop was that it covered examples and case studies from open source applications.

Shifting to Functional Programming: Lambdas for Java DevelopersFunctional programming is on the rise. Almost all major and mainstream languages support functional programming features, including C++, Java, Swift, Python and Visual Basic. With Java 8’s lambda functions, Java now supports functional programming. Moving to functional programming can result in significantly

FOSS for EveryoneThis half-day track comprised multiple sessions on the use of FOSS and covered some interesting topics including transforming customer engagement with open source DBMS, open source licensing in the cloud age, innovation with open source adoption, IBM’s relationship with open source that spans decades, etc.

The CloudThis was a half-day track with multiple sessions on how to choose the best cloud solution and the latest developments in cloud solutions. Topics covered in this track included: ‘DevOps – The New Paradigm in Business IT, Powered by Open Source’, ‘Simplified Multi-cloud Management’, ‘IBM Bluemix and Docker Containers’, ‘Redefine Your Cloud Storage with OpenSource’ and ‘Architecting the Cloud Journey’.

Mobile App DevelopmentThis half-day track had multiple sessions on what’s hot on the mobile development front. Some of the topics covered in the track included ‘The Open Source Tizen Platform and Smartphones’, ‘Grommet – The UX Framework for Enterprise Applications’,

IT InfrastructureIn this half-day track the audience met the experts in IT infra management. Topics included‘Manage the IT Infrastructure Effectively’, ‘Building the Enterprise Ecosystem with Oracle: Oracle Linux’, ‘Building Enterprise Applications with Asterisk’ and ‘Provisioning of Hadoop on Hyper Converged Infrastructure.’

Success StoriesOpen Source has helped organisations save a lot of money. This full-day track had IT decision-makers share their success stories with open source. Some of the key speakers in the track included Ashwin Khorana, CTO, Kotak Bank; Srijon Biswas, Flipkart; Anoop Menon, CTO, RedBus; Piyush Jha, AVP, product engineering, CSM, GlobalLogic; and Susheel Zaveri, CTO, 24X7.

better code and productivity gains. However, it requires a paradigm shift — you need to move away from imperative and object-oriented thinking to start thinking functionally. That’s what this workshop helped achieve. It helped the attendees make this shift towards functional programming. The workshop introduced lambda functions in Java with examples from the Java library itself.

IoT: An Introduction and Getting Started IoT is an evolving field. The purpose of the workshop was to present a current technological snapshot. The architectures, protocols, processors as well as sensors and actuators in use today were looked into. Free source development tools introduced in an earlier lecture were further discussed in the context of the overall ecosystem. A simple demo application and its development was taken

up to illustrate the typical development process..

Getting your Hands Dirty with the DevOps Tool ChainThis workshop targeted developers or system admins, who longed to try their hands at the DevOps tool chain. It introduced the attendees to the approach for managing infrastructure as a code.

Tizen Web App Development – a Hands-on SessionThis workshop included an introduction to the Tizen SDK/IDE and tools – a hands-on session to develop a simple Web application and showcase the sample code usage of multimedia and location APIs.

The author is senior assistant editor at EFY.
