Since 2005, we have been building a global platform for change. Hub Islington launched in 2005 and since then the global Hub network of 6000 socially driven startups has emerged across 5 continents in 38 locations. In 2011, Hub Westminster was launched to scale impact, developing 12,000 sq ft of space with learning and investment structures.
More recently, an increasing number of open domains have been maturing and developing. From the more established open domains of open source programming such as GitHub to OpenGov in open data and the WikiHouse for open source construction.

We believe a new Open Economy is in the making – one that is open-source, collaborative and driven by transparency. We see this as an economy driven by inventors and intrapreneurs as well as start-ups.
HUB LAUNCHPAD is inviting you to join the Open Venture Movement to accelerate the Open Economy and grow the next generation of inventors, company founders, intrapreneurs and collaborators committed to open and transparent ventures.
The aim is to build an Open Economy where corporate purpose is to create material positive impact on society and the environment.
To build platforms and infrastructures to seed ventures that are committed to open and transparent practices in all jurisdictions they operate in and throughout their supply chain.
Around the world, people are asking for openness. Transparency about tax, participation in products, accountability in finance.
An economy that is open will be more democratic, productive, fairer and less harmful.
An Open Economy.
An Open Venture Movement to build an OPEN ECONOMY

WE IDENTIFIED THAT THE RIGHT FORM OF FUNDS AND THEIR DELIVERY WAS MISSING FROM THE PIPELINE.
THIS HAS LED US TO LOOK AT WHAT OUR MODEL OF GROWTH COULD BE.

The ContextThe UK is globally leading the social investment & finance market and we have seen a significant growth of social funds for social minded businesses.
However, our critical analysis of the social venture landscape shows that there are key issues that need to be addressed.
It is widely recognised (eg NESTA’s Growing Social Ventures) of a significant gap in the Social Venture Investment landscape at early stages where ventures need time to shape business models and understand social impact.
Our own learning from the HUB network, A-Fund and entrepreneur led Missions shows us that conventional incubators for small scale social ventures support those with fixed ideas with insufficient scope for supporting promising people to evolve their projects in response to a rapidly developing marketplace.
This causes a market dislocation or “broken pipeline” between market place need, investors and potential ventures.
We need to get better at supporting founders - not just their projects.
Key issues identified
Social investment Funds are too broad
Cohort sizes too small
Over generic programme support
Over emphasis on business plan
Broken pipeline : lack of development at pre venture stage
“Hero” Investment Selection
Exit Strategy focus
