PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Leon Jacobs

The Club commenced 2012/13 on strong footing after Paul Jubber was reappointed coach almost immediately following the 2011/12 season. His role was extended to encompass preseason and more player coaching and we are fortunate to have Jubbs at our club. We look forward to seeing the fruits of his hard labour as our young teams continue to develop and soon appear in the finals. Players were given their best preparation for many years thanks to a full preseason program including indoor and outdoor sessions. Many of our younger players availed themselves of the coaching talent at their disposal and positioned themselves for selection in high elevens when the season began. Unfortunately, some senior players neglected the opportunity which may have been the missing ingredient to playing finals this year. Off the field, the committee made two critical decisions for the continued development of the Club. Firstly, we decided after many years to leave the VTCA and registered all four teams in the Mercantile Cricket Association. This decision was not taken lightly after a 30+ year association with the VTCA however we believed the MCA was a better fit for the Club right now. We were delighted with the MCA’s initiatives and commitment over the season to play cricket at all costs and the preservation of what they call the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. We were also fortunate to have Julien Wiener return to the club to join with his sons, Brett and Dean. Julien was appointed captain of the 1st XI and committed to the same objectives as the Club – bringing young players through, changing the culture around attendance, training and commitment to the season, and playing in the correct spirit. Despite the difficulties with player commitment Julien was always true to those objectives whilst still ensuring the team was as competitive as possible on the field at all times. Unfortunately, despite several promising moments throughout the season, none of our four senior teams participated in finals this season but we are confident that with the rebuilding we have undertaken these last two years, finals appearances are just around the corner. We are also encouraging more senior, experienced players to return to the Club as our younger players need more on field guidance and direction to fast track them to future success.

I’d like to congratulate and thank our tremendously hard working captains Julien Wiener, semi-permanent stand in Howard Machlin (3rd’s) and Ian Jones (Silver Arc 4th’s) on the leadership they provided the playing group every week. At the start of the season numbers were a challenge and we did our best to put competitive teams on the park. We’re particularly excited about the players that have developed under the captains’ tutelage and the prospects for the future. Commiserations to Ian who had to juggle player availability as his team forged towards finals, with a demand on his better players from higher elevens when they also played Sundays, which contributed to the 4ths only just missing out on finals. To our leadership group, congratulations to you for being recognised by us as leaders. We will continue to expect you to be leaders at our Club and hopefully the wider community. Whilst mentioning our on field leaders I must also mention Paul Fink. Finky answered the call this season to continue in his role as Chairman of Selectors. He continued to assist me and others in whatever he was asked of and is a truly great clubman. Thank you from everyone at the Club for your continued commitment, administering the website (easily the best in Australian amateur cricket and the broader Maccabi movement) and all your other contributions. Another area of significant progress this year was corporate sponsorship. Thanks to our expanding sponsorship base we can provide members with great facilities and conditions from which to get the most out of their cricket. Having redeveloped our training facilities and the pavilion our attention now turns to the Oval 9 wicket. In agreement with Parks Victoria we expect the centre wicket to be properly flattened and leveled ahead of next season to improve the quality of our pitches. It is critical our players learn their game on better pitches than those we have served up in recent times. The Junior club continues to thrive and I congratulate Howard Machlin on the work he does. During the season break we will continue to discuss the merits of brining the clubs closer to ensure the continued success of Jewish cricket in Melbourne. Maccabiah will be held in July 2013 and we wish the Australian team a safe and successful trip. We are proud to have provided so many players to the final squad. May they bring home a gold medal and a lifetime of memories and new friends.

As I wrote last season, the Silver Arc 4th XI play on Sundays which allows our more observant members to play cricket and be integrally involved in our Club. However we must also consider whether we move other teams to Sundays too which gives players in all teams the opportunity to be promoted to higher elevens. There is no reason why a quality Jewish cricketer shouldn’t be able to force his way into higher teams just because for years we have played only on Saturdays. It is incumbent on the committee to review all options to create opportunities for our club to be as inclusive of all of our members as possible. Thank you to Maccabi Victoria for their continued support. We were fortunate to receive a development grant from Maccabi Victoria last year to purchase much needed curatorial equipment. We appreciate their continued support and the role they play in Jewish sport and the broader community. A big thanks to Dave Robinson, our curator, who continuously toils on our centre wickets to produce the best he can for us. We know Dave is looking forward to having an improved centre wicket to work with as much as we are! A very special thank you to all of the Club’s sponsors. The Committee and the playing group are greatly appreciative of your continued support which allows us to continually improve both on and off the field. An extra special thank you to Rodney Morley Persichetti and Silver Arc who have been the Club’s major sponsors for several years. Simeon Goldenberg, a previous MACC President, returned this year to take on the role of maintaining and growing our corporate sponsorship and supporter base. Simeon had some very innovative ideas and it’s a credit to Simeon that our sponsors grew significantly this year. Simeon’s hard work was rounded off with the Club’s first ever Corporate Breakfast hosted by Wingate Group. The event was a great success, giving our corporate sponsors the opportunity to network, gain some valuable investment insights and hear more about the Club. The Past Players Association continues to be a source of great pride for us. It is great to see former players keeping up their ties to the Club either at the PPA Golf Day or at a game on a Saturday or Sunday. Unfortunately the Grand Prix and major fixturing issues forced us to cancel the annual Family day however we are committed to getting that back in the calendar next season.

The hard working committee deserves recognition too. Joel Rembach continued as Treasurer and remains a fantastic support to me and the Club. Hopefully one day his back will improve to the extent that he can take the new ball again and terrorize an opening batsman or two. Brad Abrahams deserves special recognition for his fifth season as club secretary, a fantastic commitment from such a young person. His email communications this season were outstanding and he continues to demonstrate a maturity and wise head well beyond his years. Yossi Herbst has been fantastic. His enthusiasm for cricket, his commitment to fortnightly selection BBQs, his communication with the MCA, and his support and work with our Kosher sponsors has been appreciated. Thanks too to Simon Fisher for his ongoing work as a conduit between the senior and junior players and for everything else he does off the field. A serious, pre-season knee injury hampered Adam Lubitz’s contribution to the Club but we look forward to him returning fitter than ever next year. Mark Soffer joined the committee this season and was a constant in everything he does. Despite his youth he possesses his maturity and knowledge beyond his years and a perspective that keeps his feet firmly on the ground despite the tremendous future that awaits him. Finally, to our Vice President Joel Beebe, the club continues to be indebted to you for the work you do behind the scenes. You continue to be my right hand man as well as assisting the treasurer with his duties. So we look forward to next season…..as I’ve already said, we continue to explore all options to make this Club a more attractive place for Jewish youth to come and ply their trade. We continue to seek the best possible support and facilities for our players be that grounds, curators, equipment or coaches…that is our role. To those of you thinking about getting involved, do so – it is so rewarding. With on-field success just around the corner I encourage you to get on board now! Thanks to all of you who made my second season as President so rewarding and for all of your support and encouragement. Thanks to my wife Nicole for her support and understanding as I took on a little more than last season balancing the rigors of playing

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Julien Wiener After an off-season where much time was spent building plans for a successful season, the 1st XI, quite honestly, was disappointing. In most games, the team was able to put itself in a position to win, but wasn't able to finish things off. Adapting to slower pitches and, at times, unorthodox play was a challenge. Our fielding, in general, was inconsistent, and we dropped too many catches at important times. The middle and lower order batting failed to capitalize on a number of positive starts which meant the team either failed to chase relatively moderate scores or set competitive totals for the opposition to chase. In all of that though, there were a number of positive outcomes. David Fayman was probably the outstanding bowler in the competition and in most games bowled both tirelessly and took wickets. We couldn't have asked for more from his efforts with the ball. For the team to be successful though, he needs to score more runs. We were fortunate to have David Majtlis return to the club and we benefitted from his experience, his batting and leg spin bowling. Josh Sacks and Mark Soffer had some early successes but weren't able to maintain their consistency. Brett Wiener, in his return to competitive cricket, gave the team a tough and competitive edge. His glove work improved as the season progressed and he was our most consistent batsman, however, it's fair to say he got too many scores between 15 and 25 for his liking. Dean Wiener was in the same boat with the bat. On occasions he bowled tightly in the 1 dayers and was our safest and most dependable outfielder. Simon Morawetz played a very important role in keeping our spirits up when things got tough. Not only did he take good wickets and field enthusiastically, he never gave up whatever the situation. Also, he built his formidable reputation as the leading "tweeter" in the MCA! That could be the start of something big! What excited us all most of all was the emergence of a number of young players who have the ability to take the club successfully into the future. Adam Klein's skills as a swing bowler really stood out in the games he played. He always got an early breakthrough, kept good batsmen under pressure and as he matures will gain pace and penetration. Adam Kahlberg and Josh Jones both showed enough for us to be confident that with continued improvement and hard work, they can be strong 1st XI cricketers. Benji Jones is a genuine allrounder and fierce competitor. If the club decides to play on Sundays then full advantage will be taken from his skills.

So, after all that, where to from here? Hard work, perhaps an extra night's practice and Sunday play will be the things that can set the base for 2013/2014. I cannot give enough praise to Leon, Joel Beebe, Paul Fink, the committee, the other captains (Leon, Howard and Ian) and the rest of the support crew for all your work during what was, at times, a tough season. Also, the club must realize how fortunate they are to have Paul Jubber as their coach, mentor and all round outstanding person. His time, cricket knowledge, composure and passion for the club and simply doing a great job set an outstanding example for all of us to follow. Finally, my thanks to you all, personally for making my year so much fun. Good luck to all of you. Julien Wiener 1st XI Captain LEONARD BURMAN 1st XI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP:

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Leon Jacobs After a solid preseason we headed into the season proper excited by the prospect of giving some younger players some opportunities in the newly entered competition of MCA A Reserve grade. The main reason for my return this season was to try and improve the balance of youth and experience within the team and the club and hopefully, by way of that better balance, fast track some of our young talent to performing at an “Open” level. Unfortunately, due to injury and constant player unavailability we lacked the continuity of commitment to ensure we kept the balance of experience and young talent on the pitch week to week. That said, when we did get that balance right towards the end of the season, we finished strongly winning our last 2 games and 3 of our last 5 and the team that played in the final round would have given the finals a real shake. All that said, our win/loss ratio improved on last season and I do believe we’re headed down the right track. Young players like Matt Gamsu, Aaron Fetter, Adam Klein, Adam Kahlberg, Farrell Plavin, Ross Sandler, Dan Sneider, Yoav Silverstein and even those young in terms of cricket experience like Adam Paykel, Paul Litinsky and Adam Rapoport all showed they will be significant contributors at this level and higher in future seasons if they maintain their enthusiasm for the game and commitment to improvement. Wise old heads like Matt Aubor, Jeff Nadelman, Simon Fisher and Jeremy Balbin also ensured at times we had a better balance of youth and experience although I’d love a few others of past eras to put their hands up and come back and help usher this next exciting generation through. Matt in particular, managed his body and his mind brilliantly and was one of the standout players not only for our team this season but the whole competition and I expect Matt to poll extremely well in the A Reserve “Brownlow”. Well done Matt, you were an inspiration to those that played with you and a constant great support to me. To Paul Fink who continues to do a power of work behind the scenes, Jubbs for his constant and unwavering enthusiasm and encouragement, Julien for his rock solid

support of what we’re trying to build, Howard for his willingness to help out without question, and Ian for his integrity, honesty and commitment, thank you all so much. To the players, hopefully you learned at least one thing from my experiences this season. Feel free to approach me if you’d like an honest appraisal of where I think your game is at and the areas you can work to improve. Next season could be a unique one for the club if we do decide to shift to Sunday play. Competition for places in every team will become fiercer and that’s a very exciting thing and something we unfortunately haven’t had for some time. If it happens, embrace the change and challenge yourself to continue to improve and be part of a stronger Second eleven as we move forward as a club. 3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Howard Machlin

Season 2012/13 provided me with a return to competitive cricket after a 15 year absence. It was almost by stealth that I was invited to captain the 3rd XI in a majority of games this year. Brad Abrahams & Jeremy Seigel also took on the role during the season.

It was a most interesting season with the team participating in a number of one day matches, some two day games and also some matches that were played on Sunday. This enabled the club to field a large number of players in this team.

My overall aim for the season was for all players representing the 3rd XI to enjoy their cricket. The competition that the team faced in C grade was quite strong on most occasions. It was not unusual from week to week to have 3 or more changes to the line-up. This itself resulted in some inconsistency in the performance of the team. Also many players were not able to play every game or train every week and this was reflected in some of the efforts out on the field.

Nevertheless the 3rd XI provided an opportunity for younger players to develop their cricket. Many of these players represent the Junior Cricket club as well. The prevalence of so many one day games also worked in favour of many players who have commitments that preclude them from playing 2 day games. Many of the younger & junior players show great promise and they had many opportunities to bat & bowl against experienced adult opposition and this will stand them in good stead for future seasons.

A highlight of the season was the herculean task of the match committee to select a team for each game. The number of phone calls made & emails sent to assemble a 3rd XI for each game was unbelievable. Well done to the match committee! Hopefully some of the players who made a cameo appearance this season will be enthused to participate more so next season.

In terms of on field performance the team managed to win 3 games. It is certainly true that winning is better than losing & how good is the feeling of winning! These wins were characterised by both good team efforts and some individual efforts that stood out. Hopefully all players can take away what is needed to win games and reproduce those efforts in more games next season. In a number of games we were unevenly matched against strong opposition and the results of the games confirmed this. We had at times insufficient depth in both our

Annual Report 2012/13

Page 17

bowling & batting. Despite the uneven nature of the games I give full credit to the way the teams competed and to the manner in which they played their cricket. Some highlights for the season included:

• Round 4 - in week 1 Monash Gryphons 7/207 defeated us all out 95. In week 2 we batted first and made 132. In reply Monash were 0/43 and then a hat-trick to Paul Litinsky (3/15) and 4 wickets to Nathan Rothschild (4/20) saw Moansh lose 10/46 to be bowled out for 89.

• Some fierce bowling by Yossi Herbst, Eli Lipshatz & Nadav Greenberger v Burnley • A handsome return to cricket for Adam Rapoport with many good performances

throughout the season • A great win over Melbourne City with great performances from our young players

Brygel 38, Zac Aflalo 25, Farrell Plavin 3/22 and Phil Voskoboynik 3/36 • A fantastic last round win over Burnley with Brad Abrahams making 33 and 4/15 • The wicket keeping of Benjamin Machlin, which resulted in him being invited to

play in the MCA Under 21 representative side.

Personally, despite the legacy of being unfit and aged, the season was an enjoyable experience. If I overlook all the injuries I sustained throughout the season I can state that I would do it all again as the opportunity to play in a team with one of my children was something to savour. I thank the club for allowing me to indulge myself in this way.

I look forward to the club enjoying increasing success in season 2013/14.

Page 20

Silver ARC 4th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Ian Jones The Silver Arc 4th XI had a mixed season, with nine wins and eleven losses resulting in finishing fifth on the MCA C Sunday grade ladder.

Due to the absences of many players due to university and VCE studies early in the season, we lost eight of the first eleven games to be on the bottom of the ladder. In fact, in round 8 and 9 the 4th XI used 21 different players, with only the captain playing both games. After the summer break, the Silver Arc team had a wonderful outright win (in a one day game!) away against Thornbury Turf Strokers, and followed up by winning the next five games straight to rise into the top four. The 4th XI were aiming for finals, but unfortunately lost each of the last three games to drop to fifth and be two points outside of making the finals.

The changing group of players meant that very few players played more than twelve out of the twenty rounds. All throughout the season, we had a strong bowling team, with five bowlers taking 16 wickets or more. Nadav Greenberger, Daniel Wein, Joshua Jones and Adam Kalhberg led the attack, and didn’t provide any respite to opposition batsmen.

On the home track at Albert Park we consistently dismissed sides for under 100 runs, but when batting, we struggled in most games to score sufficient runs. Our attitude and concentration when batting needs to improve next season for the 4th XI to play finals.

Osher Klein deservedly won the batting trophy with 286 runs, with recruits Ze’ev Aron and Dovi Paltiel both demonstrating their ability by making some consistent scores. Yehonatan Dodge also showed form with the bat, and Benji Jones scored freely in the two games he played.

The highlights of the season were:- • The outright win against Thornbury Turf Strokers, where MACC rolled

them for 45 (Greenberger 5/26, Wein 3/17) and 93 (Aron 4/13), while making 6.154 (Aron 41, Kornwasser 28)

• Defeating Canterbury twice; this team having played in the B Sunday grade the previous season

• Beating both grand final teams (East Malvern Tooronga & Power House) at Albert Park

The most pleasing aspect of the season was that the Silver Arc 4th XI developed a solid core of players over the latter half of the season, with the team spirit being really strong and responsive. I was honoured to lead such a great group of guys, and I’m confident they enjoyed playing in the team.

It was also very gratifying to have a number of 4th XI players being selected in the 1sts and 2nds when those teams played on Sundays. This not only strengthens the playing ability of the whole club, it demonstrates that shomer Shabbat players can advance above C grade!

Thank you to the other MACC players who came to watch the 4ths during the season, especially to Leon Jacobs for his regular support. To Paul Fink and the selection committee, thanks for listening and reading my opinionated comments. A special thank you to my wife Alison and daughter Leah for providing the afternoon teas, including pavlova – the other C grade sides and the umpires know that the MACC provides the best afternoon teas in the comp. Finally, I’m confident that some more consistent batting performances will ensure that the Silver Arc 4th XI has a successful finals series next year.
