Graduating from Swinburne University with honours in design, Susan worked as a graphic designer and illustrator eventually deciding to invest more time into her passion for textile and fibre art.

Her love grew from 2 dimensional wall pieces into 3 dimensional sculptural pieces which appeared to escalate in scale, until they finally evolved into the large sculptural pieces Susan creates today.

The pieces are multi-layered fabrics, hand sewn stitches and applied embellishments. The characters have evolved in their characteristics and expression. Stylistically, her work aims for a feel of imperfection and haphazardness which gives each piece more life, soul and character.

Susan’s sculptures and collectible toys aspire to reconnect her audience to the forgotten joys of their childhood.

Her characters are quirky and often a little curious or strange. They use a playful combination of bold colour and deep layers of material texture. Each piece seeks to hold the viewer captive in an imaginary world of wonderment, where fantasy becomes the reality, and another story begins to unfold in some odd and peculiar childlike world.

The use of old-fashioned woollen blankets give her characters an endearing softness which hold the viewer in a place of remembrance of being safely tucked into a cozy bed before slipping into a world of bizarre lands and animated adventures.

RAffLE7 GREAT PRIZES TO WIN

EXHIBITION DerinYA ART & CRAFT DACE ART RAFFLE 2016

ONLY 1 BOOKLET

FROM EVERY CHILD

The DACE 2016 Raffle is on again with six fantastic prizes ready to be won. This year we are aiming for a 100% return rate on all ticket books and we’ve asked our industrious class parents to help each class get their tickets back. Just one book per child is all we need to reach our target. Tickets went home in school bags last week and must be returned whether sold or not by July 15th.

This years prizes include an acrylic painting by Guest Artist, Lydia Ben-Natan valued at $850. A necklace by Guest Jeweller, Jennie Riley valued at $242. Two tickets to “Simon’s Final Sound” donated by Frankston Art Centre valued at $92. A Japonica Day Spa Gift voucher valued at $80. A Hubert called “Quip” by Guest Craft Artist, Susan Swenser valued at $65 and a Framed ‘Bonjour’ marble & gold effect print donated by Ginger Monkey valued at $60 .

Remember every raffle ticket sold helps our children, so delve into the depths of that crumb filled school bag and get selling. Good Luck!

The Derinya Art and Craft Exhibition is delighted to have Marian Machismo as the Guest Art Judge in 2016.

Marian Machismo is a Melbourne-based illustrator and tattoo artist who loves getting her hands dirty with pen to paper. She says, “I’m a very tactile person and sometimes the grain of a piece of paper will take my pen in unforeseen directions and I love that. The sensation of never really being in control can be an exciting feeling.”

To self-reflect is amongst the most difficult things for a creative to do, but Machismo has a great insight into how viewers see her work. “I think my work is relatable – not everyone will take away the same experience having viewed it, but for the most part it seems to trigger a base under-standing. For me, my work forms a visual language that I can manipulate to create the world around me and my experience of existing within in it.”

Marian has devoted her entire life to her artistic career and often reflects on the path she has taken. “I love my job, but at least once a day I stop and imagine how easy it could have been if I had stopped, gotten a nine-to -five job and grown up. To stop creating would be to stop existing and frankly that’s not an option for me.

Come and see which artworks catch Marian’s eye at this year’s exhibition. Will you agree with the judge’s decision?

With their simple storylines, bright colours and boldly drawn illustrations, it wasn’t long before Roger Hargreaves’s MR. MEN™ series became a worldwide phenomenon. The first title, ‘Mr. Tickle’, was created in 1971 after Hargreaves’s son Adam asked him what a tickle would look like, and dozens of books followed, including the LITTLE MISS™ titles in 1981. Today there are over 80 books in the series and a global market for merchandise.

As part of Vivid Sydney 2016, ex-Derinya student Eddie Zammit has curated this exhibition that brings together artists from Australia and overseas to create their own versions of these iconic characters, celebrating 45 years of the MR. MEN™ & LITTLE MISS™ worlds.

This is the first time permission has been given for the characters to be reinterpreted based on the individual styles of the featured artists, who will include 123KLAN (MR. CHATTERBOX), Ben Brown (MR. TICKLE), Bei Badgirl (LITTLE MISS HUG), Jeremyville (MR. HAPPY) and Meggs (MR. MESSY), amongst others.

Visitors to DACE 2016 will have theopportunity to purchase exclusive framed archival paper prints of these 16 unique artworks. So make like MR. RUSH and get in before all 16 are sold out!

‘REDRAWN: CELEBRATING 45 YEARS OF MR. MEN™ & LITTLE MISS™’ ARTICLE BY SARAH HALFPENNY

What you see is what you get with Travis Price – he’s a no-frills, straight-up kind of guy. A 30-something Dad and self-described “skate tragic”, Price lives and works from his property in Ballarat, surrounded by his wife and young family. His vector-based illustrations are full of pun-intended humour, and Price has worked on scores of commercial and apparel projects for clients including Sony, Big M, Nike, Santa Cruz, and Mambo, as well as his own clothing brand Jimmy Royale.

According to Price, “A good illustrator needs to be flexible in their approach and understand what and to whom they are communicating. They need a great understanding of colour and the importance it can play. At the end of the day, a good illustrator is setting the scene in a way that hasn’t been done before.”

In an exclusive for DACE 2016, Price has created a small quantity of hand-signed and numbered retro-style Frankston-inspired posters. Come to DACE and be one of the lucky ones who take home one of Price’s sensational artworks before they’re all sold!
