Today’s service follows the Order of Matins. Matins, which means “of the morning,” is the

name given to the service of prayer that has been used by the Christian Church at the start of

a new day. The opening sentences have been included in the service of Matins since the sixth

century. “As the Christian congregation prays Matins, it receives the new day as a gift from

God’s hand with praise, thanksgiving, and intercession” (Lutheran Worship: History

and Practice, 444).

Venite – “O Come, Let Us Sing” Psalm 95:1-7 Tune: DIADEMATA (“Crown Him with Many Crowns”)

C (sung) Come let us praise the LORD, with joyful noises sing;

Unto the Rock Who saves us now we come our thanks to bring.

Great is the LORD, our God. Above all gods He’s King.

His hands reach to the depths of earth, His love and care to bring.

The mighty hills are His; He made and owns the sea.

He formed the dry land with His hands. To God our praises be.

We kneel before the LORD; we worship and adore.

He is our Maker and our God, we praise Him evermore.

We are the LORD’s own sheep. He holds us in His hand;

He leads us into pastures green and feeds us from the land.

All praise, eternal Son, for Thy redeeming love,

With Father, Spirit, ever One, in glorious might above.

Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 61:1-3, 7

The Servant described in the latter part of the book of the prophet Isaiah tells of the

restoration to be given to those experiencing the effects of sin. This restoration results in acts

of righteousness and praise from all nations. 1The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to

bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to

proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are

bound; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our

God; to comfort all who mourn; 3to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give

them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of

mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called

oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified….

7Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they

shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double

portion; they shall have everlasting joy.

P O Lord, have mercy on us.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Lesson Hebrews 11:13-16

The writer to the Hebrews describes how those who died in faith did so looking forward to

a “better country, that is, a heavenly one.” 13These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having

seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they

were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14For people who speak thus make it

clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15If they had been thinking of that land

from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore

God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

P O Lord, have mercy on us.

C Thanks be to God.

Responsory Psalm 119:89; 26:8; Luke 11:28

Gospel Reading Luke 4:16-21

After reading Isaiah 61:1-2, Jesus states His identity, purpose, and mission. 16And Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his

custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll

and found the place where it was written, 18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me

to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at

liberty those who are oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21And he began to say

to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

P O Lord, have mercy on us.

C Thanks be to God.

Family Footnotes

“Live Uncommon.” This was a phrase that my daughter and I heard several

times this past Monday as we attended freshman orientation at Concordia

University Wisconsin. Those of you who have sent children off to college

have experienced many of the same thoughts that are going through my

mind, and any teenager who has embarked upon the beginnings of their

college career has had many of the same questions that my daughter has. It

can be overwhelming, no doubt. Class schedules, financial aid information,

balancing studies with athletics, meeting new people with whom you will be

living, and the list continues. At the end of the day, I parked myself at the

edge of Lake Michigan because I knew that my mind needed to stop the

ramblings of worry and concentrate on something that I knew to be true. As I

gazed across the aquamarine ripples and felt the slightly chilly wind in my

face, I was reminded of the account of Jesus stilling the storm. I offered up a

quick prayer of protection for my daughter and peace for the storm

threatening to unleash its power in our minds. Jesus calls us to live

uncommon in a world that so often sucks us into being part of the crowd. He

calls us to proclaim Him in all that we do. It’s not just because of what we

do, but how we live. Jesus is our peace in the midst of chaos and He has

created each of us to do incredible things to proclaim His glory according to

His will. As I focused on a cross that had been erected on the edge of the

shoreline, a bible verse that I read earlier in the week came to mind, “You

keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in

you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”

evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and

ever. Amen.
