    OPENSTACK

    WHAT IS OPENSTACK?

OpenStack is a global, collaborative software project founded by Rackspace Hosting with the participation of more than 60 organizations to develop the standard open cloud operating system and speed innovation in cloud technologies. The mission of the OpenStack community is to produce the ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform that will meet the needs of both public cloud providers and enterprises deploying private clouds, regardless of size, by being simple to implement and massively scalable.

OpenStack is a collection of open source technologies delivering a massively scalable cloud operating system. Today, OpenStack consists of three core projects: OpenStack Compute (code-named Nova), a scalable compute provisioning engine, OpenStack Object Storage (code-named Swift), a fully distributed object store, and OpenStack Image Service (code-named Glance), an image registry and delivery service.

All of the code for OpenStack is freely available under the Apache 2.0 license. Anyone can run it, build on it, or submit changes back to the project. We strongly believe that an open development model is the only way to foster open cloud standards needed to remove the fear of proprietary cloud lock-in and enable federation, portability and hybrid cloud scenarios.

WHO IS SUPPORTING THE OPENSTACK PROJECT?

OpenStack was billed as the fastest growing open source cloud project in 2010, and the community is quickly building a large ecosystem of compatible tools and services. More than 60 organizations are now supporting the OpenStack mission by providing architectural input, contributing code and/or integrating it into their business offering. In addition to Rackspace, participating organizations include Canonical, Citrix, Cisco, Dell, Microsoft, NASA and NTT Data.

The list of organizations who have agreed to publicly support OpenStack is growing on a daily basis and available at OpenStack.org/community. Individual contributors can be viewed on Launchpad or the OpenStack wiki.

HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH OPENSTACK?

OpenStack is for institutions, service providers and enterprises with physical hardware theyd like to use for large-scale cloud deployments. The code for OpenStack Object Storage and Compute is available on the Launchpad repository via OpenStack.org. From the website and wiki, users can sign up for mailing lists, download manuals and documentation and join the #openstack IRC channel on the Freenode network to learn more.

Developers can download the code and submit patches at the Launchpad code repository, which can be accessed via OpenStack.org. Companies wishing to join the community and contribute to the project may contact the community manager [email protected].

OpenStack user groups have already formed in the Silicon Valley, New York, %GYPT *APAN AND 3OUTH +OREA !TTEND Alocal meetup or start one in your area. Stay tuned to the events page on OpenStack.org.

How can I go work for the OpenStack project?

Start coding it is an open source project! Several companies are also hiring developers to work on the OpenStack project, and you can find a full list of opportunities at OpenStack.org.
