Disposal of the packingmaterialThe packaging is designed to protectthe appliance from damage duringtransportation. The packaging materialsused are selected from materials whichare environmentally friendly for disposaland should be recycled.

Recycling the packaging reduces theuse of raw materials in themanufacturing process and alsoreduces the amount of waste in landfillsites.

Disposing of your oldapplianceElectrical and electronic appliancesoften contain valuable materials. Theyalso contain specific materials,compounds and components, whichwere essential for their correct functionand safety. These could be hazardousto human health and to the environmentif disposed of with your domestic wasteor if handled incorrectly. Please do not,therefore, dispose of your old appliancewith your household waste.

Please dispose of it at your localcommunity waste collection / recyclingcentre for electrical and electronicappliances, or contact your dealer orMiele for advice. You are alsoresponsible (by law, depending oncountry) for deleting any personal datathat may be stored on the appliancebeing disposed of. Please ensure thatyour old appliance poses no risk tochildren while being stored prior todisposal.

To avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the appliance, pleaseread these instructions carefully before using it for the first time.They contain important notes on the safety, installation, use andmaintenance of the appliance. Miele cannot be held liable for non-compliance with these instructions.

Keep these instructions in a safe place and ensure that all usersare familiar with the contents. Pass them on to any future owner ofthe appliance.

Correct application

This cooker hood is intended for use in domestic households andsimilar working and residential environments.

The cooker hood is not intended for outdoor use.

It must only be used as a domestic appliance to extract vapoursand remove odours from cooking.Any other usage is not supported by the manufacturer and could bedangerous.

The cooker hood can only be used by people with reducedphysical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience andknowledge, if they are supervised whilst using it, or have beenshown how to use it in a safe way and recognise and understand theconsequences of incorrect operation.

Safety with children

Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from the cookerhood unless they are constantly supervised.

Children 8 years and older may only use the cooker hoodunsupervised if they have been shown how to use it safely andrecognise and understand the consequences of incorrect operation.

Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the cookerhood unsupervised.

Please supervise children in the vicinity of the cooker hood and donot let them play with it.

Danger of suffocation. Packaging, e.g. plastic wrappings, must bekept out of the reach of babies and children. Whilst playing, childrencould become entangled in packaging or pull it over their head andsuffocate.

Technical safety

Unauthorised installation, maintenance and repairs can causeconsiderable danger for the user. Installation, maintenance andrepairs must only be carried out by a Miele authorised technician.

A damaged appliance can be dangerous. Check it for visible signsof damage. Do not use a damaged appliance.

The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteedwhen correctly earthed. It is essential that this standard safetyrequirement is met. If in any doubt please have the electricalinstallation tested by a qualified electrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this cooker hood can only beassured if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

The connection data (voltage and frequency) on the data plate ofthe cooker hood must match the mains electricity supply in order toavoid the risk of damage to the cooker hoodCompare this before connecting the appliance to the mains. Consulta qualified electrician if in any doubt.

Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by amulti-socket unit or an extension lead. These are a fire hazard anddo not guarantee the required safety of the appliance.

For safety reasons, this appliance may only be used after it hasbeen built in.

The cooker hood must not be used in a non-stationary location(e.g. on a ship).

Touching electrical components and tampering with electrical andmechanical parts is highly dangerous to the user and can causeoperational faults. Only open the housing as described in the instructions given in theinstallation sheet and in the Cleaning and care section of thisbooklet. Under no circumstances should any other parts of thehousing be opened.

The manufacturer's warranty will be invalidated if the appliance isnot repaired by a Miele approved service technician.

Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance whengenuine original Miele replacement parts are used. Faultycomponents must only be replaced by Miele spare parts.

If the electrical connection cable is faulty it must only be replacedby a Miele authorised service technician to protect the user fromdanger.

During installation, maintenance and repair work, the appliancemust be disconnected from the mains electricity supply.

Using at the same time as another heating appliance that depends on the airfrom the room

Danger of toxic fumes!Great care should be taken when using the cooker hood in thesame room or the same area of the house at the same time asanother heating appliance that depends on the air from the room.Such heating appliances draw in air from the room and ductexhaust gases out to the open air through a chimney or extractionducting. They include gas, oil, wood and coal-fired boilers andheaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas hobs andovens.

The cooker hood draws in air from the kitchen and fromneighbouring rooms. This applies to the following modes ofoperation:- extraction mode,- extraction mode with an external motor,- recirculation mode with a recirculation box installed outside theroom.If there is insufficient air, an underpressure will occur. The heatingappliance may be starved of oxygen. This impairs combustion.Harmful gases could be drawn from the chimney or extractionducting back into the room.Risk of death!

In order to ensure safe operation and to prevent gases given off bythe heating appliance from being drawn back into the room, whenthe cooker hood and the heater are both operated simultaneously,an underpressure in the room of 0.04 mbar (4 Pa) is the maximumpermissible.

Sufficient ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which cannotbe blocked, e.g. in windows, doors and outside wall vents. Thediameter of the inlet openings must enable sufficient ventilation. Aventilation brick alone is not generally sufficient to ensure safeventilation.

The overall ventilation condition of the dwelling must be taken intoaccount. If in any doubt, the advice of a competent builder, or forgas, a qualified gas fitter should be sought.

If the cooker hood is being operated in recirculation mode,whereby the air is redirected into the room in which it is installed,the above restrictions do not apply.

Correct use

Risk of crushing! Do not reach into the travel area of the extractoras it moves up or down.

Never use a naked flame beneath the cooker hood. To avoid thedanger of fire, do not flambé or grill over a naked flame.When switched on, the cooker hood could draw flames into the filter.Fat deposits could ignite, presenting a fire hazard.

Always switch the cooker hood on when a cooking zone is in use,otherwise condensation may collect in the hood, which could causecorrosion.

Overheated oil and fat can ignite, causing fire damage to thecooker hood.When cooking with oil or fat, chip pans and deep fat fryers etc, donot leave the pans unattended. Similarly, never leave an open grillunattended when grilling.

Do not use the cooker hood without the filters in place. This wayyou will avoid the risk of grease and dirt getting into the applianceand hindering its smooth operation.

There is a risk of fire if the cooker hood is not cleaned asdescribed in these operating instructions.

The cooker hood can get very hot during cooking due to heatrising from the hob.Do not touch the housing or the grease filters until the cooker hoodhas cooled down.

Correct installation

Refer to the cooker or hob manufacturer's instructions as towhether a cooker hood may be operated above the cooker/hob.

Safety regulations prohibit the fitting of a cooker hood over solidfuel stoves.

Warning: this cooker hood cannot be operated in combination witha gas hob.

The distances given in “Installation” must be observed whenfitting the cooker hood.

Exhaust ducting must be of non-inflammable material. Suitablematerial is available from Miele specialist dealers or the Miele SparesDept.

The appliance must not be connected to a chimney or flue whichis in use. Neither should it be connected to ducting which ventilatesrooms with fireplaces.

If exhaust air is to be extracted into a chimney or ventilation ductno longer used for other purposes, seek professional advice.

Cleaning and care

Do not use a steam cleaning appliance to clean this appliance. The steam could reach electrical components and cause a shortcircuit.

Accessories

Only use genuine original Miele accessories and spare parts withthis appliance. Using accessories or spare parts from othermanufacturers will invalidate the warranty and Miele cannot acceptliability.

Modes of operation

Depending on the model of the cookerhood, the following options areavailable:

Extraction modeThe cooking vapours are drawn in bythe cooker hood. The air is then passedvia the edge extraction panel throughthe grease filters, cleaned and thendirected outside.

Recirculation mode(requires a conversion kit and charcoalfilters available as optional extras)

The air is drawn in and passed via theedge extraction panel through thegrease filters and then through thecharcoal filters. The cleaned air is thenrecirculated back into the kitchen.

Operation with an externalmotor(requires conversion kit DEXT 6890,available as an optional extra)

The conversion kit is required if youwish to install the motor in a location ofyour choice (within the home) awayfrom the downdraft extractor unit. Themotor is connected to the extractor unitby a special control cable andcontrolled using the control elementson the extractor unit.

Extending/retracting thedeflector plate, switching thefan on/off

Risk of crushing!Do not reach into the travel area ofthe extractor as it moves up or down.

Switch the fan on as soon as you startcooking. This is to ensure that vapoursare captured right from the start.

Touch the On/Off control , until allsymbols are lit up.

The deflector plate rises up. The fanswitches on at power level 2, the hoblighting switches on at 70% brightness.

Touch the On/Off control briefly toswitch the fan off.

The fan can be switched on again bybriefly touching one of the fan powerlevel controls.

To retract the deflector plate pressthe On/Off control , until allsymbols are lit up.

The deflector plate retracts. All symbolsgo out.

To select a power levelFor light to heavy cooking vapours andodours, select from power levels 1 to 3.

For short periods of cooking food withintensive vapours and a strong aroma,e.g. when searing meat, select Boostersetting B.

Select the power level required bytouching a control from 1 to B.

Reducing power down fromthe Booster settingThe fan automatically switches back topower level 3 after 5 minutes.

Selecting the run-on timeIt is advisable to run the fan for a fewminutes after cooking has finished toneutralise any lingering vapours andodours in the air.With the run-on option the fan switchesitself off automatically after 15 minutes.

After you have finished cooking,press the run-on option control 15.

The fan will switch off after 15 minutes.The deflector plate remains extended.

If you touch the run-on option control15 again, the fan will remain on.

Switching the hob lighting on/off The cooker hood lighting is switched

on and off when the deflector plate isextended and retracted.The hob lighting switches on at 70%brightness.

Touch the hob lighting control toswitch the lighting to 100%brightness.

Touch the hob lighting control againto switch the lighting off.

Energy saving tips

This cooker hood operates veryefficiently and economically. Thefollowing will help you to save evenmore energy when using it:

– Ensure that there is sufficientventilation in the kitchen whencooking. In extraction mode, if thereis insufficient air flow the cookerhood cannot operate efficiently andthis causes increased operating noiselevels.

– Always cook with the lowest possiblesetting. This produces fewer cookingvapours, so you can use a lowercooker hood power level andtherefore benefit from reducedenergy consumption.

– Check the power level selected onthe cooker hood. A lower power levelis generally sufficient for the majorityof cooking. Only use the Boostersetting when necessary.

– When a large volume of cookingvapours is being produced, switch toa high power level in good time. Thisis more efficient than operating thecooker hood for longer to try tocapture cooking vapours which havealready been distributed throughoutthe kitchen.

– Make sure that you switch the cookerhood off after use.

– Clean or change the filters at regularintervals. Heavily soiled filters reduceperformance, increase the risk of fireand are unhygienic.

Housing

General information

The surfaces and controls aresusceptible to scratches andabrasion.Please observe the followingcleaning instructions.

All external surfaces and controls canbe cleaned using hot water with asmall amount of washing-up liquidapplied with a well wrung-out softsponge or cloth.

Make sure that water does notget into the cooker hood.Only clean the area of the controlswith a damp cloth.

Then wipe the surfaces dry using asoft cloth.

Do not use:

– cleaning agents containing soda,acids, chlorides or solvents,

– abrasive cleaning agents, e.g.powder cleaners or cream cleanersand abrasive sponges, as well as potscourers or sponges which havebeen used previously with abrasivecleaning agents.

Important for appliances withstainless steel surfaces

Stainless steel surfaces can becleaned with a proprietary non-abrasive cleaning agent designedspecifically for use on stainless steel.

To help prevent re-soiling, aproprietary conditioning agent forstainless steel (available from Miele)can also be used. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions on thepackaging.

Important for appliances with glasssurfaces

Glass surfaces can be cleaned usinga proprietary non-abrasive cleaningagent designed specifically for use onglass.

Grease filters and panel foredge extractionThe edge extraction panel and the re-usable metal grease filters in theappliance remove solid particles(grease, dust, etc.) from the kitchenvapours, preventing soiling of thecooker hood.

The grease filters and the panel must becleaned at regular intervals.

Heavily soiled grease filters hinder airextraction and will lead to increasedlevels of soiling in the cooker hoodand in the kitchen.

Fire hazard!Oversaturated grease filters are a firehazard.Clean the grease filters at regularintervals.

Cleaning interval

The edge extraction panel should becleaned regularly (at least every 3 - 4weeks) to avoid a build-up of grease.

After 30 operating hours the greasefilter symbol will light up when thedeflector plate is out, to remind you toclean the edge extraction panel and thegrease filters.

Removing the panel and greasefilters

The panel is held in place by magnetsat the top. Pull the panel forwards bythe upper edge, unhook it at thebottom and remove it.

Open the grease filter retainer catchand remove them.

If charcoal filters are fitted to the backof the grease filters, they must beremoved before cleaning (see“Charcoal filters”).

Cleaning the panel

Follow the instructions under“Housing”.

The panel is not suitable for cleaningin a dishwasher.

Cleaning the grease filters by hand

Clean the filters with a soft nylonbrush in a mild solution of hot waterand a small amount of washing-upliquid. Do not use “neat” washing upliquid.

Unsuitable cleaning agents

Unsuitable cleaning agents can causedamage to the surface of the filters ifused regularly.Do not use:

– cleaning agents containing descalingagents

– powder cleaners, cream cleaners

– aggressive multi-purpose cleaningagents or spray cleaners for grease

– oven sprays

Cleaning the grease filters in thedishwasher

Place the grease filters upright orslightly inclined in the lower basket.Ensure the spray arm is notobstructed.

Use a commercially availablehousehold dishwasher detergent.

Select a dishwasher programme witha wash temperature between 50 °Cand 65 °C.

Depending on the detergent used,cleaning the filters in a dishwashermay cause the inside filter surfaces tobecome discoloured. This will notaffect the functioning of the greasefilters in any way.

After cleaning

After cleaning, leave the filters to dryon an absorbent surface beforereplacing them.

When removing the panel and filtersfor cleaning, also clean off anyresidues of oil or fat from the nowaccessible parts of the casing toprevent the risk of these catching fire.

Resetting the grease filter operatinghours counter

After cleaning, the operating hourscounter needs to be re-set.

With the deflector plate out, touch thegrease filter control for approx. 3seconds until the grease filter symbol goes out.

Charcoal filterIn recirculation mode with conversionkit DUU 2900 two charcoal filters arefitted into the recirculation unit. To dothis, follow the Operating andinstallation instructions supplied.

In recirculation mode with conversionkit DUU 151 two DKF 22-1 charcoalfilters are fitted on the back of thegrease filters. These absorb the odourswhich arise during cooking.

Charcoal filters are available from yourdealer or from Miele.

Fitting/replacing the charcoal filter

Before fitting or replacing a charcoalfilter, the panel and the grease filtersmust first be taken out (see previoussection for instructions on how to dothis).

Take the charcoal filter out of itspackaging.

Secure the charcoal filters to the backof the grease filters with the retainersprovided.

Replace the grease filters and thepanel.

When to change the charcoal filter

Replace the charcoal filters whenthey no longer absorb kitchen odourseffectively.They should, however, be replaced atleast every 6 months.

Disposing of charcoal filters

Used charcoal filters can be disposedof with the normal household waste.

a The motor can be rotated for installation, so exhaust air can be extractedupwards, left, right or downwards. The motor can also be fitted in the same position at the back of the appliance.If the motor is fitted at the back of the appliance, the back panel of the furniturehousing unit must be cut out in the installation area and sufficient installationspace must be provided behind the unit.

b The electrical connection box can be positioned as required on the left besidethe motor on the hood itself or in the housing unit.

c Ensure that materials are sufficiently stable.

Exhaust connection 150 mm

Cannot be installed in conjunction with a gas hob.

If you are planning to install an oven/cooker in front of the appliance, theappropriate installation advice and dimensions regarding cool air circulationmust be observed.

The installation location must be easily accessible. The downdraft extractor mustalso be freely accessible and located such that it can be dismantled in the event offuture service requirements.

Place the downdraft extractorcarefully into the ready-prepared cut-out (see “Appliance dimensions”).

Secure each of the lower bracketswith two screws on the casing, sothat the feet rest on the floor of thehousing unit. To do this, you can alsorotate the brackets when fitting them.

Fit the upper brackets loosely to thedowndraft extractor casing.

The brackets can be pushed into theholder.

Push the brackets upwards andscrew them into place under theworktop.

Tighten the screws on the casing.

Alternatively the brackets can also berotated when fitting them, so that thedowndraft extractor can be securedto the sides of the housing unit.

Align the downdraft extractorvertically and screw the bracketssecurely to the base of the housingunit.

Guide the connection cable from thedowndraft extractor to the motor unitand plug it into the motor.

Position the cable and push into theholder on the casing with the cablegrommet supplied.

Alternatively the motor can be fittedonto the downdraft extractor frombehind.

– To do this, remove the back coverfrom the casing and fit it onto thefront.

– Place the cable grommet onto theconnection cable and insert it into theholder on the rear opening of theappliance.

Tip: The DEXT 6890 conversion kitprovides a means of installing the motorin a suitable alternative location of yourchoice within the home. It is electrically connected to thedowndraft extractor by a 7 m longconnection cable. The conversion kit is available topurchase as an optional extra. It issupplied with its own installationinstructions which must be observed.

Rotate the motor so that the exhaustsocket points in the required directionand secure it to the downdraftextractor.

Guide the three connection leads onthe bottom of the downdraft extractorthrough the casing and plug theminto the correct sockets at the bottomof the connection box. Make sure that the plugs click infirmly. Close the locking catches on themiddle plug.

Plug the electrical cable supplied intothe correct socket on the bottom ofthe connection box.

Secure the connection box to thedowndraft extractor. It can either befitted in the position shown oralternatively it can be fitted onto theother side of the motor, onto the backof the downdraft or onto a cabinetwall.

If moisture gets into the unit this cancause an electric shock.Therefore the connection box mustnot be in contact with the floor.Position and secure the cable in asuitable place.

Attach the exhaust ducting, e.g.flexible hose, to the exhaust socketusing a hose clip (available as anoptional accessory).

Extraction mode See “Connection for air extraction”

for further instructions on fitting theducting.

Recirculation modeIf site conditions are not suitable for thecooker hood to be used with airextraction, the downdraft extractor mustbe set up for recirculation. There areseveral options for this:

– connect DUU 151 recirculationconversion kit to the exhaustsocket. The downdraft extractorgrease filters must be fitted with DKF22-1 charcoal filters (see “Cleaningand care”)

or

– connect recirculation boxDUU 2900 or recirculation boxDUU 1000 to the exhaust socket.

The charcoal filters are integrated inthe recirculation box so charcoalfilters do not have to be fitted in thedowndraft extractor.

Conversion kits DUU 151, DUU 2900and DUU 1000 are available topurchase as optional accessories.Conversion kit DUU 1000 must beconnected to flat extractor ducting. Flatextractor ducting and accessories areavailable from retail outlets.

See the relevant installationinstructions for more information.

Connection for air extraction

If the cooker hood is used at thesame time as a heating appliancethat relies on oxygen from the sameroom, there is a risk in certaincircumstances of toxic fumesbuilding up.It is essential that the “Warning andSafety” instructions are observed.The cooker hood should be installedaccording to local and nationalbuilding regulations. Seek approvalfrom the building inspector wherenecessary.

Use smooth or flexible ducting madefrom approved non-flammablematerials for exhaust ducting.

To achieve the most efficient airextraction with the lowest noise levels,please note the following:

– The diameter of the exhaust ductingshould not be less than 150 mm.

– If flat ducting is being used, the crosssection must not be smaller than thecross sectional area of the exhaustconnection.

– The exhaust ducting should be asshort and straight as possible.

– Only use wide radius bends.

– The exhaust duct must not be kinkedor compressed.

– Ensure that all connections arestrong and airtight.

Remember that any constriction ofthe air flow will reduce extractionperformance and increase operatingnoise.

If the exhaust is ducted through anoutside wall, a telescopic wall vent ora roof vent (available as an optionalaccessory) is recommended.

If the exhaust air is to be ducted intoa flue, the ducting must be directed inthe flow direction of the flue.

When ducting is horizontal it must belaid to slope away at at least 1 cm permetre. This is to ensure thatcondensate cannot drain back intothe appliance.

If the exhaust ducting is to runthrough rooms, ceiling space etc.where there may be great variationsin temperature between the differentareas, the problem of condensationwill need to be addressed. Theexhaust ducting will need to besuitably insulated.

Electrical connection

All electrical work should beundertaken by a suitably qualifiedand competent person in strictaccordance with current national andlocal safety regulations (BS 7671 inthe UK).Installation, repairs and other workby unqualified persons could bedangerous, for which themanufacturer cannot be held liable.Ensure power is not supplied to theappliance until after installation orrepair work has been carried out.Do not connect the appliance to themains electricity supply by anextension lead. These do notguarantee the required safety of theappliance.

The connection data is given on thedata plate. This is visible when thegrease filters have been removed.Ensure that this data matches thehousehold mains supply.

Connection of this appliance should bemade via a suitable isolator or a doublepole fused spur connection unit whichcomplies with national and local safetyregulations and the On-Off switchshould be easily accessible after theappliance has been built in. Whenswitched off there must be an all-polecontact gap of 3 mm in the switch(including switch, fuses and relaysaccording to EN 60335).

If the switch is not accessible afterinstallation (depending on country), anadditional means of disconnection mustbe provided for all poles.For extra safety it is advisable to protectthe appliance with a suitable residualcurrent device (RCD). Contact aqualified electrician for advice.

Important This appliance is supplied forconnection to an a.c. 230 V singlephase 50 Hz supply. The wires in themains lead are coloured in accordancewith the following code:
