4.0 General safety regulations for elec-tric tools

CAUTION: Read all safety regulations andinstructions.Any failures made in following the safety regulationsand instructions may result in an electric shock, fireand/or serious injury.Keep all safety regulations and instructions in asafe place for future use.

The term “electric tool” used in the safety regulationsrefers to electric tools operated from the mainspower supply (with a power cable) and to batteryoperated electric tools (without a power cable).

1. Workplace safety

Keep your work area clean and well illuminat-ed. Untidy or unlit work areas can result in acci-dents.

Do not use this tool in a potentially explosive environment containing combustible liquids, gases or dust.Electric tools generate sparks, which can in turn ignite dust or vapors.

Keep children and other persons away from the electric tool while it is being used.Allowing yourself to get distracted can cause you to lose control of the tool.

2. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

The toolʼs connector plug must be able to fit into the socket outlet. Do not modify the plug in any way! Do not use adapter plugs in conjunction with electrically grounded tools.Unmodified plugs and matching socket outlets reduce the risk of an electric shock.

Avoid touching grounded surfaces, such as those of pipes/tubes, heaters, cookers and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of getting an electric shock if you are electrically grounded.

Keep the tool away from rain and moisture/wet conditions.Penetration of water into an electric tool increases the risk of an electric shock.

Do not use the cable to carry the tool, hang it up or pull the plug out of the socket. Keep the cable away from sources of heat, oil, sharp edges and moving tool parts.Damaged or tangled cable increases the risk of an electric shock.

If you intend to use an electric tool outdoors, ensure that you only use extension cable that is approved for outdoor applications.Using extension cable that is approved for outdoor applications reduces the risk of an electric shock.

If operation of the electric tool in a damp envi-ronment can not be avoided, use a earth-leak-age circuit-breaker. The earth-leakage circuit-breaker reduces the risk of an electric shock.

3. PERSONAL SAFETY

Be alert, work conscientiously and exercise appropriate caution when using the electric tool. Do not use the tool if you are tired or are under the influence of drugs/medication or alcohol. One moment of carelessness or lack of attention when using the electric tool can cause serious bodily injury!

Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety goggles.Wearing personal protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-slip footwear, protective headgear and ear muffs (depending upon the type of electric tool and the particular application) reduces the risk of sustaining injury.

Make sure that the tool cannot start up acci-dentally. Ensure that the electric tool isswitched off before you connect the tool to thepower supply and/or insert the battery, or pickup or carry the tool.Physically touching the switch with your finger when carrying the tool or connecting the tool to the power supply switched on can lead to accidents.

Remove adjusting tools/wrench(es) prior to switching on the power tool.A tool or wrench that is positioned inside a rotating power tool part can cause injury.

Avoid abnormal working postures. Make sureyou stand squarely and keep your balance atall times. This way, you will be able to have better control over the tool in unexpected situations.

Wear suitable clothes. Never wear loose fitting clothes or jewelry. Keep hair, clothes and gloves away from moving parts.Loose clothing, dangling jewelry and long hair can be caught by moving parts.

If dust extraction and dust collection devices can be mounted, ensure that these are connected and are properly used. The use of a dust extraction system can reduce the danger posed by dust.

4. Using the treatment of electric tools

Do not overload your tool. Only use suitable electric tools to perform your work.Using the right electric tool allows you to work better and safer within the toolʼs quoted capacity range.

Do not use an electric tool whose switch is defective. An electric tool that no longer can be switched on or off is dangerous and must be repaired.

Pull the plug out of the socket and/or removethe battery before making any adjustments tothe tool, changing accessories or put the tooldown. This precaution eliminates the possibility of inadvertently starting the tool.

When not in use, store electric tools out of the reach of children. Do not allow those persons to use this tool who are unfamiliar with it or who have not read these instructions.Electric tools are dangerous when they are used by inexperienced persons.

Take good care of your tool. Check that moving parts properly function and do not jam, that parts are not broken off or damaged in any way and that the tool can be used to its full capacity. Have damaged parts repaired prior to using the tool. The cause of many accidents can be traced back to poorly maintained electric tools.

Keep your blades sharp and clean.Properly maintained blades with sharp edges jam less frequently and are easier to use.

Make sure to use electric tools, accessories, attachments, etc. in accordance with theseinstructions. Take the conditions in your workarea and the job in hand into account.Using electric tools for applications other than those intended can lead to dangerous situations.

5. SERVICE

Have your tool repaired only by authorized specialists using original replacement parts. This will ensure that your tool remains safe to use.

4.1 Special safety instructions for chainsaws

The safety instructions must be observedwhen using the machine. For your ownsafety and the safety of others, please readthis information carefully before using the

machine and keep it in a safe place for refe-rence. Use the chainsaw only to saw woodor objects made of wood. Any other typesof use are at your own risk and could wellbe dangerous. The manufacturer cannot beheld liable for damage caused by improperor incorrect usage.

Safety instructions and accident pre-vention

To prevent the incorrect handlingof the chainsaw, please read theoperating instructions in theirentirety before using the machinefor the first time. All the informa-

tion on the handling of the chainsaw is relevantto your personal safety. Ask a professional toshow you how to use the machine!

Switch the machine off before releasing thechain brake.

To prevent damage to your hearing, wear earmuffs; helmets with a visor are particularlyadvantageous.

Make sure you have a firm footing when workingwith the chainsaw.

Always switch off the machine before putting itdown.

Always pull the plug out of the power socketbefore doing any work on the machine.

Only plug in when the machine is switched off. The chainsaw must be used only by one person

at a time. All other persons must stay clear of thechainsawʼs area of swing. Children and pets inparticular must be kept well away at all times.

The saw must not be touching anything when itstarts up.

Hold the chainsaw firmly in both hands whenworking with it!

The chainsaw must not be operated by childrenand young people. The only exception to this ruleare young persons of 16 years and over who canuse the chainsaw under supervision as part oftheir training. Lend the saw only to those personswho are familiar with this type of machine andknow how to handle it. Always pass on the ope-rating instructions along with the chainsaw!

The chainsaw may be operated only by personswho are rested and in good health, i.e. in goodphysical condition. If you start to tire, have abreak in good time. The chainsaw may not beused after the consumption of alcohol.

If the machine is not going to be used for a whileit must be set aside in such a way that no otherperson is endangered.

Before making a cut, always set the claw stop

GB

before you start to saw. The power cable must always be behind the saw

operator. The power cable must always lead away from

the rear of the machine. Use only original accessories. Machines used outdoors must be connected

up to an earth-leakage circuit-breaker. When using an extension cable outdoors:

Check that it is approved for outdoor use and ismarked accordingly

Use a strong support when sawing convertedtimber and thin branches (sawing trestle, Fig. 4).Do not stack the timber and do not have it heldby a second person or with your foot.

Logs must be secured in position. On sloping ground, always work facing upwards. Pull the saw out of the wood only when the saw

chain is running. If you are performing several cuts, switch off the

chainsaw in between cuts. Pay extra attention when cutting splintered wood.

Sawed off pieces of wood may be catapulted inany direction (risk of injury!).

Do not use the chainsaw to remove or sweepaway small pieces of wood or similar objects.

Leave branch lopping work to trained personnel!Risk of injury!

Pay special attention to branches under tension.Do not cut through freely suspended branchesfrom underneath.

Never stand on the trunk when lopping off bran-ches.

The chainsaw may not be used for forest work,i.e. for felling and lopping off branches in theforest. Because of the cable connection the sawoperator does not have the necessary mobilityand his safety is not guaranteed!

Always stand to the side of the tree being felled. When retreating after making the back cut, watch

out for falling branches. On slopes the saw operator should stand to the

upper or left or right side the trunk or lying tree, never by its bottom.

To prevent injury, damaged power cables mayonly be replaced by the manufacturer or thecustomer service center.

In order to prevent kick-back, please follow thesesafety instructions:

Never start cutting with the tip of the chain bar!Always keep a close eye on the tip of the chainbar!

Never cut with the tip of the chain bar! Becareful, when continuing cuts you are alreadyworking on!

Always start cuts with the chainsaw already run-ning!

Make sure that the saw chain is always properlysharpened.

Never cut through more than one branch at atime! When lopping off branches, be careful notto touch any other branches.

When cross-cutting, pay attention to trunks stan-ding very close to each other. If possible use asawing trestle.

5. Transporting the chainsaw

Before transporting the chainsaw, always remove theplug from the power socket and slide the chain guardover the rail and chain. If several cuts are to be per-formed with the chainsaw, the saw must be switchedoff between cuts. Please note that our equipment has not beendesigned for use in commercial, trade or industrialapplications. Our warranty will be voided if themachine is used in commercial, trade or industrialbusinesses or for equivalent purposes.

6. Before starting up

The voltage and current supply must comply with theratings on the type plate. Before commencing work, always check that the chainsaw works properly andis safe to operate. Check also that the chain lubrica-tion and the oil gauge are in good working order (seeFig. 9). When the oil level is approx. 5 mm from thebottom mark (marked with “Min” in the illustration),you must top up with oil. When the oil level is abovethis mark you can work without worry.Switch on the chainsaw and hold it above light-col-ored ground. Be careful not to allow the chainsaw totouch the ground. For safety reasons it is best tokeep a clearance of at least 20 cm. If you now seegrowing traces of oil, the chain lubrication system isworking correctly. If there are no traces of oil at all,try cleaning the oil outlet (Fig. 3/pos. C) or contactyour Customer Service.

7. Assembling the chain bar and sawchain (see Fig. 1/2/3)

Make sure that the power plug is disconnectedfrom the power supply!- Important: The front finger guard (1) mustalways be in the top (vertical) position. The chain bar and saw chain are delivered separate-

GB

ly. To assemble, first remove the protective cap (10),unscrew the hexagon head cap screw underneathand detach the chain cover (9). To prevent injury onthe sharp cutting edges, always wear gloves whenassembling, tensioning and checking the chain. Before assembling the chain bar with the sawchain, check the cutting direction of the teeth(see Fig. 2)! Hold the chain bar (11) vertically withthe tip pointing upwards and put on the saw chain(12), beginning at the tip of the bar. Then assemblethe chain bar and saw chain as follows:Place the chain bar with saw chain on the swordguide (B) and chain tensioning bolt (A). Fit the sawchain round the chain wheel (D) and make sure thechain is correctly mounted (see Figure 2/Item 12).Place the cover (9) on top and tighten gently with thehexagon nut.

8. Tensioning the saw chain

Always pull out the power plug before doing anywork on the machine!Wear safety gloves!Make sure that the saw chain (12) is inside the guidegroove of the chain bar (11)! You can now tensionthe chain correctly by turning the chain tensioningscrew (E) clockwise (turning it anticlockwise mayloosen the chain). Then tighten the hexagon nut.Check the chain tension again (see Fig. 10). Do nottension the saw chain too tightly. When cold, itshould be possible to lift the chain in the middle ofthe chain bar approx. 3 mm. When warm, the sawchain will expand and slacken. There is a danger ofthe saw chain jumping off the rail altogether.Retension if necessary. If the saw chain is reten-sioned when hot, it must be loosened again whenthe sawing work has been completed. Otherwise, thecontraction which takes place as the chain coolswould result in excessively high tension. A new sawchain requires a running-in period of approx. 5 min-utes. Chain lubrication is very important at this stage. After running in, check the chain tension and reten-sion if necessary.

9. Filling with chain oil (see Fig. 9)

To prevent dirt getting inside the tank, clean the oiltank cap (3) before opening. Check the contents ofthe oil tank during sawing work by checking the oilgauge (A). Close the oil tank cap (3) tightly and wipeaway any spills.

10. Chain lubrication

To prevent excessive wear, the saw chain and chainbar must be evenly lubricated during operation.Lubrication is automatic. Never work without chainlubrication. If the chain runs dry, the entire cuttingapparatus will quickly become severely damaged. Itis therefore important to check both chain lubricationand the oil gauge before every use (Fig. 9).Never use the saw when the oil level is below the„Minimum“ mark (Fig. 9).

Minimum - When only approx. 5 mm of oil is visi-ble at the lower rim of the oil gauge, you musttop up with oil.

Maximum - Top up with oil until the window isfull.

11. Checking the automatic lubrication

Before commencing work, check the automatic chainlubrication and oil gauge. Switch on the chainsawand hold it above light-colored ground. Be careful notto allow the chainsaw to touch the ground. For safetyreasons it is best to keep a clearance of at least 20cm. If you now see growing traces of oil, the chainlubrication system is working correctly. If there areno traces of oil at all, try cleaning the oil outlet (Fig.3/Item C) or contact your Customer Service.

12. Chain lubricants

The service life of saw chains and chain barsdepends to a large extent on the quality of the lubri-cant used. Old oil must not be used! Use only envi-ronment-friendly chain lubricant. Store chain lubri-cant only in containers which comply with theregulations.

13. Chain bar

The chain bar is subject to especially severe wearand tear at the nose and on the bottom. To avoidone-sided wear and tear, turn the chain bar overevery time you sharpen the chain.

14. Chain wheel

The chain wheel (Fig. 2/Item D) is subject to espe-cially high wear and tear. If you notice deep wearmarks on the teeth, the chain wheel must be

GB

11Helpline No: UK 0151 649 1500 / IRE 189 094 6244

replaced. A worn chain wheel curtails the service lifeof the saw chain. Have the chain wheel replaced bya specialist dealer or your Customer Service.

15. Chain guard

The chain guard must be clipped onto the chain andsword as soon as the sawing work has been comple-ted and whenever the machine has to be transpor-ted.

16. Chain brake

In the event of kick-back, the chain brake will beactuated via the front finger guard (1). The front fin-ger guard (1) is pushed forwards by the back of thehand and this causes the chain brake to stop thechainsaw, or rather the motor, within 0.10 s.

17. Releasing the chain brake

To be able to use your chainsaw again, you mustrelease the saw chain again. First switch off themachine. Then push the front finger guard (1) backinto the vertical position until it locks in place. Thechain brake is now fully functional again.

18. Sharpening the saw chain

You can have your saw chain sharpened fast andcorrectly by specialist dealers, from whom you canalso obtain chain sharpening equipment to enableyou to sharpen the chain yourself. Please follow thecorresponding operating instructions.

Take care of your tools. Keep your tools sharpand clean to enable you to work well and safely.Follow the maintenance regulations and theinstructions for changing tools.

19. Starting up (Fig. 1)

Always wear safety goggles, ear muffs, protec-tive gloves and heavy-duty work clothes!

Never use the chainsaw when standing on a ladder,in a tree or in any other instable places. Do not useabove shoulder height and do not saw with onehand.

Use the saw only with approved extension cableswith the prescribed insulation and connections foroutdoor use (approved rubber-sheathed cables)which fit the machine plug. To switch on, hold thefront handle with your left hand, then use your righthand to hold the rear handle. To switch on: Press the power-on disable (4) withyour thumb, press the On/Off switch (B) and releasethe power-on disable (5) again.

If the chainsaw does not run, the chain-brake must be released at the front fingerguard (1). Be sure to read the sections„Chain brake“ and „Releasing the chainbrake“ on this point.

After switching on, the chainsaw will run imme-diately at high speed. To switch off: Release the ON/OFF switch (5). Onlyput down the chain saw after the chain has stoppedrotating! After working with the chainsaw, you shouldalways: Clean the saw chain and chain bar. Attachthe chain guard.

Machine protection

Never use the machine in the rain orin damp conditions.

If the extension cable is damaged, pull the power plug immediately.Never work with a damaged cable.

Check the machine for damage. Before using yourtool again, check the safety devices or any slightlydamaged parts to ensure that they are in good wor-king order. Make sure the moving parts are workingcorrectly. All the parts must be correctly assembledand meet all the conditions required to ensure thatthe machine works correctly. Any damaged safetydevices and parts must be properly repaired or repla-ced immediately by a Customer Service workshop orthe company ISC-GmbH, unless there are instruc-tions to the contrary in this operating manual.

Notes on working practice

Kick-back

When cross-cutting always set the claw stopagainst the timber you want to saw (see Fig. 4).

Always set the claw stop before cross-cutting.Only then switch on the machine and startsawing into the wood. Pull the machine upwardsat the rear and lead the direction with the frontgrip. Use the claw stop as a fulcrum. To repositi-on for further cutting, exert slight pressure on thefront grip. Pull the saw back slightly during thisprocess. Position the claw stop further down thecut and pull up the rear grip once again (see Fig.5).

Plunge cuts and horizontal cuts may only be car-ried out by professionals (high risk of kick-back;see Fig. 6).

For horizontal cuts, position the saw at the smal-lest possible angle. This requires extreme cauti-on, as the claw stop cannot be applied in thiscase.

If the chain gets stuck when sawing with theupper side it may be thrust toward the operator. For this reason you should saw wherever possi-ble with the bottom side, as the chainsaw willthen be thrust away from the body towards thewood (see Fig. 7 and 8).

When lopping off branches, the chainsaw shouldbe supported wherever possible against thetrunk. Do not cut with the tip of the chain bar (riskof kick-back; see Fig. 6).

Watch out for trunks rolling towards you.Kick-back!

The chainsaw is likely to recoil if the tip of thechain bar (especially the top quarter) accidentallytouches wood or any other solid objects. In thiscase the saw will move uncontrollably and will behurled towards the operator at full power (risk ofinjury!).

Fig. 6You can avoid accidents by not sawingwith the tip of the chain bar as this maycause the saw to rear up suddenly. Alwaysuse the complete safety equipment andclothes when working with the saw.

Make sure your work piece is firmly secu-red.Use clamps to stop the work piece fromslipping. This also makes it easier to opera-te the machine with both hands.

Kick-back will result in an uncontrollable motion ofthe saw. This represents the danger of severe inju-ries. Never saw with a slack or blunt chain. Apoorly sharpened chain increases the risk of kick-back. Never saw above shoulder height.

20. Tips on chainsaw useSawing up wood(See Fig. 4 and 5)

To saw up wood, please observe the safety regulati-ons and proceed as follows: Make sure the wood tobe sawed cannot slip. Clamp short pieces of wood inplace before sawing. Saw only wood or woodenobjects. When sawing, make sure that no stones ornails are touched as these could be thrown out anddamage the saw chain. Avoid bringing the runningsaw into contact with wire fences or the ground. When lopping off branches, support the machine asfar as possible and do not saw with the tip of thechain bar. Watch out for obstacles such as treestumps, roots, ditches and hillocks as these couldcause you to fall.

Remember:The chainsaw must be running before it comes intocontact with the wood!To switch on (Fig. 1): Press the safety lock-off (4)and ON/OFF switch (5). Place the lowest claw (13)on the wood. Raise the chainsaw by the rear grip (6)and saw into the wood. Move the chainsaw back alittle and place the claw (13) further down. Pay extraattention when cutting splintered wood. Pieces ofwood may be catapulted in any direction. To switch off: Release the ON/OFF switch.Pull out the power plug.

Remove the chainsaw from the wood only withthe saw chain still running. Anyone who sawswithout a stop can be pulled forward.

Felling trees

Felling trees is dangerous and requires practice. If you are a beginner or inexperienced, do not tryto teach yourself but seek professional training.(Fig. 12)

To fell trees, observe all the safety regulationsand proceed as follows:

The chainsaw may be used to fell only trees whichare smaller in diameter than the length of the chainbar. Never try to extract a jammed saw with the

GB

13Helpline No: UK 0151 649 1500 / IRE 189 094 6244

motor still running. If the saw chain gets jammed, release it using a wooden wedge.

Remember:Danger zone: Falling trees can bring downother trees with them. The danger zone is the-refore twice the length of the tree being felled.(Fig. 11)

Important:Prior to cutting you must plan and provide for anescape area (A). This escape area must be locatedbehind the expected felling direction (B) (Fig. 13).

Important:Before performing the final cut, make sure there areno spectators, animals or obstacles in the fellingpath.

Felling direction:

First estimate the direction of fall, taking intoaccount the centre of gravity of the crown andthe wind direction. The chainsaw must be run-ning before it comes into contact with the wood.Switch on the chainsaw. Saw an undercut in thetree in the direction of fall and then make a hori-zontal cut (back cut) on the side opposite to theundercut.

Make the undercut: This will give the tree direc-tion and guidance.

Check the direction of fall: If you have to correctthe undercut, always recut over the entire width.

Call out „Timber!“ Only now make the back cut, which must be hig-

her than the sole of the undercut. Insert wedgesin good time.

Leave the bridge in place as it will function as ahinge. If you cut through the bridge, the tree willfall randomly.

Fell the tree by driving a wedge into the back cut,not by sawing through it.

When the tree falls, step back and watch thecrown. Wait for the crown to stop swinging. Donot continue working under branches which havegot stuck.

Do not fell trees:

if you can no longer distinguish details within thedanger zone, e.g. owing to fog, rain, snow driftsor twilight,

if the direction of fall cannot be reliably estimatedowing to wind or gusts of wind. Felling work onsloping ground, black ice, frozen or dewy ground

is safe only if you can get a firm foothold.

To switch off: Pull the plug out of the power socket. To fell the tree, you must drive a wedge into the back cut. Whenretreating after making the back cut, watch out forfalling branches.

Maintenance and cleaning

Always pull the plug out of the power socketbefore doing any work on the machine!

Keep the cooling vents on the motor housing cleanand unobstructed at all times. Only the maintenancework described in these operating instructions maybe carried out. Any other maintenance work must becarried out by our Customer Service. Do not modifythe chainsaw in any way as this could jeopardize itssafety. Should the machine fail despite our carefulmanufacturing and inspection procedures, have itrepaired by an authorized Customer Service works-hop. In the event of any inquiries and spare partsorders, always quote the type designation and the 9-digit order number.

t For EU countries only

Never place any electric tools in your household refuse.

To comply with European Directive 2002/96/EC concerning old electric and electronic equipment and its implementation in national laws, old electric tools have to be separated from other waste and disposed of in an environment-friendly fashion, e.g. by taking to a recycling depot.

Recycling alternative to the demand to return electrical devices:As an alternative to returning the electrical device, the owner is obliged to cooperate in ensuring that the device is properly recycled if ownership is relinquished. This can also be done by handing over the used device to a returns center, which will dispose of it in accordance with national commercial and industrial waste management legislation. This does not apply to the accessories and auxiliary equipment without any electrical components which are included with the used device.

t

Given unfavorable conditions in the power supply the equipment may cause the voltage to drop temporarily. If the supplyimpedance “Z” at the connection point to the public power supply exceeds 0,25+j0,25 Ω it may be necessary to take furthermeasures before the equipment can be used as intended from this power supply. If necessary, you can ask your local electrici-ty supply company for the impedance value.
