Operational Readiness Training Period

The probationary firefighter/paramedic will spend a minimum of ten shifts as a supervised member of the

company. During this time it is imperative that the probationary firefighter / paramedic develop a working

knowledge of DPFD policies, procedures, running orders, and communications relating to EMS, fire

suppression and rescue duties. Each shift the probationary firefighter/paramedic and assigned mentor will

participate in a process that involves the demonstration of knowledge and competency relating to

designated policies and procedures.

This form is a record that documents the probationary firefighter/paramedic’s participation and

performance of the listed competencies and skills. The primary mentor must sign off for each shift.

However, this does not mean that the primary mentor be the only person to participate in the process.

Each crew member in the station that the probationary firefighter/paramedic is assigned can go through

the policies and procedures. The proctor or mentor will initial the appropriate competency or skill that they

reviewed or observed.

Competency Validation Demonstration Record

The mentor must initial each section indicating that the probationary firefighter has demonstrated

knowledge of and completed each criterion.

Daily Core Competency Demonstration

After initial training on the daily core competencies, the probationary firefighter will demonstrate the ability

to master these skills on each day they are assigned to this phase of training and evaluation. The Weekly

Skill Drill checklist will serve as the performance indicator for these daily evaluations.

Don SCBA in 60 seconds or less without facepiece compromise in all assigned PPE;

o Shift SCBA to low profile position, dump SCBA from shoulder waist, redon SCBA

Remove, carry, position, raise and tie off a 24’ ground ladder to assigned objective

Complete hydrant hook-up to engine company

Lead-out an initial attack hose line assigned by company officer and repack line

Assemble patient care equipment and utilize stretcher carry lift
