DEFINES/DESCRIBES OPIATES• referred to as narcotics• a group of drugs which are used medically to relieve pain • have a high potential for abuse• opium, morphine, heroin, and codeine• Opiate describes any of the narcotic opioid alkaloids found in opium.

These alkaloids come from the sap of the opium poppy.
