Here are some ideas to recycle, reduce waste and properly dispose of items this holiday season: Food Is Not Garbage Don’t fill your garbage with festive meal leftovers; all food scraps go in the green (organics) bin. Rethink Your Wrapping Paper Avoid using metallic wrapping paper or excessive amounts of tape—it’s not recyclable. When you open gifts, set a box aside to collect reusable ribbons, bows and other decorations, and consider using cards as gift tags for next year. Have a recycling box ready for wrapping paper or use non-metallic paper as a liner for your green bin. The City landfill (272 Ferndale Drive North) is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. If your gift requires batteries, consider buying rechargeable ones. If you have to dispose of batteries, they can’t go in the garbage. Bring used batteries to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot for free disposal. It’s open Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the landfill. Christmas Tree Collection Weekly collection of Christmas Trees in all collection areas will occur throughout the month of January, 2019. Christmas trees must be free of ornaments and tree stands. Trees placed curbside in plastic bags will not be collected. Trees must not exceed 1.8m or 6 ft in length. Please ensure that your tree is not buried or frozen in a snowbank. There is no yard waste/Christmas Tree collection during the months of February and March. Find more helpful tips at barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection. Winter maintenance in the City of Barrie Did you know? When at least five cm of snow falls in the city, the priority for plowing is the main routes (priority routes). These are the roads that are most travelled—they are serviced 24 hours a day, seven days a week when needed. The City’s Roads, Parks and Fleets Department aims to have priority routes completed about six hours after the end of a snowfall. Residential roads (secondary routes) are plowed after eight cm of snowfall. The plows aim to have these routes done 12 to 24 hours after the end of a snow event. As well, Barrie Transit bus stops and shelters are usually cleared of snow three days after a snow event, with the main stops being the priority. With Barrie's Plow Tracker, you can track the progress of the road plows, and see when your street was last serviced. Learn more at barrie.ca/snow.
