Specific problem!

• 20% of all children in main stream primary education in NI have an additional need (J.Hunter, 2008)

• 4 out of every 5 of these children not getting the support they need to achieve. (School Census Figs 2009)

• National Literacy Trust (NI) who report that 25% of all primary school children in NI are leaving primary school not having achieved a reading and writing standard appropriate to their age. (2009)

•HR services: approximately 60 posts including CEOs and ongoing contracts; numerous policies and procedures; employment disputes – grievance and disciplinary

•Strategic and operational planning – helped turn organisations round; rebuilding trust with funders; fundraising support

•Finance projects: Lloyds and Charity Bank

What have we learned?

• Planning – Income and targets driven; strategic overview; identification of need; monitoring and evaluation

• Delivery – high quality services delivery; on time

• Marketing – know your customers; NICVA communication channels; word of mouth – ‘only as good as your last piece of work’

• Managing – sales and profit; meeting targets; invoicing; cash flow is crucial

• Culture and language – need to know both sectors; ‘you are running a business’

• Support is essential – information and people

• Time is money and you don’t get it back!

• Put in the hours!
