84 pairs of matching cards, ready to

print…

The following images can be printed onto white card or photographic paper, then

laminated and cut out, to make a matching or memory game.

Depending on the thickness of your card, you may need to back the cards with another

piece of paper (colored if possible), so that students can’t see the image when the cards

are upside-down.

1. Cut each card in half (to make 168 separate cards). Students work together to

put them in matching pairs.

2. When students are familiar with the cards and how they match, place all cards

(or a selection of pairs that you want to work with) face down. Students take it

in turns to turn over two cards. If they don’t match, cards must be replaced to

the same place they were found. When a student turns over a matching pair

he/she keeps the cards and can turn over another two cards. The student(s) with

the most pairs at the end are the winners.

For example:-

&

…are cut out separately and need to be matched together.

Note: You will need a large table for students to play this. Alternatively, if you have a clean floor or a

nice rug (and students are happy to sit on the floor), this is probably the best place to play the game.

Bingo: Teacher’s Tips

1. Give each student or pair of students a bingo card. (If you have

enough students, pair work will make this more enjoyable and

relaxing for the students. Pair stronger and weaker students

together.)

2. Demonstrate how to play.

i) Draw an empty bingo card grid (3 x 3) on the board.

ii) Ask students: “What is the opposite of dry?” Elicit “Wet”.

Write “WET” on the card.

iii) Write HELLO in another empty space. Ask what question you

need. Elicit, “What is the opposite of GOODBYE?”

iv) Ensure all students understand how to play before starting.

Give other examples if necessary.

3. Give students time to think about and discuss what questions they

need to listen for.

4. When everyone is ready, choose a clue at random to read out. (e.g.

Numbers 1 – 66 could be on bits of paper in a hat.)

5. Students who have the relevant word cross it off the card. (Make a

note of the clues you have read out so that later you can check the

winning card.)

6. The first student(s) to tick off all 9 words shout “Bingo!” and they

are the winners. If students are enjoying the game you can continue

to find 2nd and 3rd place.

Other ideas for how to teach opposites…

1. PREPARATION

Before playing the song, generate interest by asking students to

suggest opposites they know already. Help them understand what

“opposites” are, by drawing a happy and sad face on the board.

Write ideas on the board.

2. MIME GAME

One student goes to the front. Teacher shows student a picture

card from the song. Student has to MIME what’s on the card. The

other students, in two teams, have to shout out the opposite of the

activity. The correct answer gets one point.

3. VOCABULARY BUILDING

Be aware that students may suggest alternatives to the words

included in the song. Encourage this and accept suitable synonyms

where appropriate. For example, “humble” could be “modest”,

“ground” could be “earth”, “new” could be “modern”, “beginning” could

be “start” and there are further alternatives that might come up.

4. POSTER

Students could make a class poster including as many of the

opposites in the picture as they can. After they have drawn pictures

they can label it and display it in the classroom as a reminder.

5. SING ALONG

Give lyric sheets to the students. Students (and teacher) sing along

together.

6. PERFORMANCE

If your students are confident and like drama activities, get them to

make a performance of the song using mime, props, costume and

showing the words in action. If it goes well, invite another class or

teacher(s)/parents/friends, to watch the finished song.
