About CSIR
The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), known for its cutting
edge R&D knowledgebase in diverse S&T areas, is a contemporary R&D
organization. Having pan-India presence, CSIR has a dynamic network of 38
National Laboratories, 39 Outreach Centres, 3 Innovation Complexes and 5
units. CSIR covers a wide spectrum of science and technology – from radio
and space physics, oceanography, geophysics, chemicals, drugs, genomics,
biotechnology and nanotechnology to mining, aeronautics, instrumentation,
environmental engineering and information technology. It provides
significant technological intervention in many areas with regard to societal
efforts which include environment, health, drinking water, food, housing,
energy, farm and non-farm sectors.
About CSIR- CSIO
CSIR - Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), a constituent unit of
Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), is a premier national
laboratory dedicated to research, design and development of scientific and
industrial instruments. The lab over the years has developed technologies for
societal, industrial and strategic sectors such as development of advanced
sensors for soil parameter mapping, pesticide detection; development of
various prosthetic and assistive devices for affordable healthcare,
development of computational platforms for early warning system for
earthquake, border security as well as for medical diagnosis.
Since its inception, the forte of the lab has
been advanced technological interventions
in the areas of ‘Optics and Photonics’. CSIR-
CSIO has traversed a long sustainable
journey from conventional optics to free-
form and hybrid optics through timely
upgradation of its facilities as well as augmentation of its knowledgebase
through expert manpower, strong industry linkage as well as through
proactive R&D efforts in consultation with industries and end-users. The lab’s
activities in the areas of Optics and Photonics covers Optical System Design,
Optical Fabrication, Optical Characterization and Metrology, Holography,
Optical Thin Film Coating, LPG and FBG based Sensors for Structural Health
Monitoring, Optical Sensors for Gas and Corrosion Sensing as well as Optical
Nano-antennas for Imaging and Sensing applications.
About Chandigarh
Chandigarh, the city beautiful, creation of
world famous French architect Le
Corbusier, is located at the Shivalik
foothills. It is one of the best planned and
greenest city of India with beautiful and
well laid out gardens, lake, and modern
architecture. It is located at a distance of
about 250 kms from Delhi and well connected by Air, Rail, and Road. It is a
gateway to Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Anandpur Sahib, Amritsar&Naina Devi.

Preamble
Optics and Photonics based technologies and instruments have considerable
impact on human endeavour and are playing central role in indisputable
growth of mankind. This fact is also reflected in the recently concluded
International Year of Light and Light Based Technologies (IYL-2015), wherein
proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its
applications, the UN has recognized the importance of raising global
awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable
development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education,
agriculture and health. These technologies play vital role in our daily lives and
are an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. It has
revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the
Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and
political aspects of the global society. Thus the importance of optics and
photonics based technologies and instruments are now quite clear for the
prosperity and development of a country.
Keeping this in mind, a one day symposium on the theme “Optics and
Photonics based Technologies and Instruments for Civil Society (OPTICS-
2016)” is being organised at CSIR-CSIO Chandigarh with an aim to provide
common platform to Scientists, Researchers, Academicians and Industry to
share and promote their innovative technologies and instruments and
discuss future solutions for enabling these for the Swasth Bharat, Skill India,
Make In India, Innovate In India, Smart City and Smart Village.
