Adolescent Health

Adolescents (ages 12–18) need a well visit with their doctor each year. A school-based sports physical is not the same thing and should not be substituted for an annual doctor’s visit.

These well visits give physicians a chance to do a thorough physical exam and perform scoliosis, vision, and hearing screening tests. Your child’s doctor may also address any behavioral, developmental, or social concerns; topics may include safe driving, substance abuse, sexual behavior, diet, and exercise.

Schedule an annual well visit for your child by calling your doctor or 1-800-736-8272 to find a provider near you. You can also visit optimahealth.com and select Find Doctors, Drugs, and Facilities.

Vaccines for Your Children: Protect Your Child at Every Age

Immunizations have had an enormous impact on improving the health of children in the United States. Most parents today have never seen first-hand the devastating consequences that vaccine-preventable diseases have on a child, family, or community. While these diseases are not common in the U.S., they persist around the world. It is important that we continue to protect our children with vaccines because outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases like pertussis, mumps, and measles can and do occur in this country.

Vaccination is one of the best ways parents can protect infants, children, and teens from 16 potentially harmful diseases. Vaccine-preventable diseases can be very serious, may require hospitalization, or even be deadly— especially in infants and young children.

Consult the Easy-to-Read Childhood Immunization Schedule and theEasy-to-Read Teen Immunization Schedule to see which vaccines are recommended based on your child’s age.

Drug Safety Tips

Protect your health and the health of loved ones by following these tips for safe medication use:

• Get instructions on how to administer your drug. Ask your pharmacist how to properly take your drug. For example, insulin pen cartridges are different from insulin vials. Some drugs such as Tanzeum® require special handling and preparation prior to administration.

• Know why you are taking your drug. Do you know the purpose of the drug you are taking? Ask your doctor and include the purpose on your personal medication list. It can help prevent mistakes when your doctor prescribes new drugs or if you are admitted to the hospital.

• Get educated about your drugs. Your doctor may prescribe a combination product to reduce the number of pills you have to take. If your prescription is for a combination product, ask your doctor if you need to stop taking other medications.

• Read labels on over-the-counter products. Drug names can be deceiving. ClariSpray® is made by the same company that makes Claritin®. Both products are used for allergies, but they are different drugs.

Get Active!

Physical activity is anything that gets our bodies moving.

According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, we need to do both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities each week to improve our health. But, how much of these activities should we do?

To reap the health benefits of being physically active, adults need at least:

• 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week; and

• muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).

OR

• 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., jogging or running) every week; and

• muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).

OR

• an equivalent mix of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity; and

• muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).

Find activities you enjoy, and spread them throughout your week so that you are physically active at a moderate or vigorous effort for at least 10 minutes at a time.

NOTE: This information does not replace the advice of a doctor. You should always consult your doctor before starting or becoming more physically active.

Tips for Your Taste Buds: Cheeseburger

Grill a healthier burger this summer. Your taste buds—and waistline—will thank you.

Ingredients

• 1 pound very lean ground beef, or fresh ground sirloin

• ½ teaspoon garlic salt

• 4 slices reduced-fat cheese

• 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns

• canola cooking spray

• freshly ground pepper

• optional toppings: lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce

Directions

1. Divide the beef into 4 equal portions. Use a patty press (or your hands) to make 4 burgers. Sprinkle them with pepper and garlic salt.

2. Pan-fry, broil, or grill the burgers, using canola cooking spray to keep them from sticking to the pan or grill. When the burgers are almost cooked through, place the cheese slices on top and finish cooking (30–60 seconds). Remove the burgers to the serving plate. If desired, cover the plate with foil to keep burgers warm and moist.

3. Dress your burger on the bun with lettuce, sliced tomato and onion, mustard, barbecue sauce, and ketchup as desired.
