The Memotec CX delivers a cost-effective, scalable Digital Circuit Multiplication Equipment (DCME) solution for small-to-medium networks – from just a few E1s up to as many as 24. Offering superior, toll-grade-quality voice up to 16:1 voice compression ratio via the G.729 codec, and guaranteed services through unique bandwidth management technology, the CX provides the performance that can result in your competitive edge.

Typical applications include BSS A link with 12:1 compression combined with GPRS traffic grooming (Gb interface), and MSC to MSC E links, aggregated with IN data and GPRS/EDGE traffic. Offering optional ATM and IP interfaces, plus VoIP gateway functions, the Memotec DCME solution delivers a smooth migration to 3G networks without requiring forklift upgrades. In addition, the Transcoder Free Operation preserves voice quality by avoiding multiple compression/decompression cycles, making it the ideal solution for deploying services over satellite in remote areas where multiple hops are required.

Cellular subscriber growth continues at astounding rates. The rollout of 2.5G and 3G networks is a reality. The popularity of Short Message Service is soaring. All are positive growth indicators, but may be straining your infrastructure.

At Comtech EF Data, we understand that backhauling and trunking cellular traffic from remote sites has become a major challenge. Terrestrial capacity is often unavailable, unreliable, costly and not expandable. And, to be competitive, you need a method of cost-effectively expanding your coverage.

Many cellular operators are taking a fresh look at satellite-based solutions. Cell sites connected via satellite provide instant infrastructure on both temporary and permanent bases, enabling deployment into remote and inaccessible locations.

Satellite is also the fastest method of restoring communications after a disaster, and is the ideal medium to provide additional capacity for one-time events, such as cellular coverage to guests on cruise ships or to attendees of major sporting events.

Optimizing Satellite Communications for GSM

Growth Challenges Infrastructure

Specializing in satellite communications, Comtech EF Data and our subsidiary Memotec, have a unique ability to deliver bandwidth-efficient and scalable solutions to GSM operators. With our infrastructure products – from satellite modems and transceivers to network access devices – you can realize bandwidth optimization, which can result in significant operating expense savings.

Migration to 2.5G/3G, the growth of GSM subscribers and the need for ubiquitous service are real challenges faced by GSM operators. The solutions offered by Memotec, a wholly owned subsidiary of Comtech EF Data, enable cost-effective transmission of cellular traffic over satellite by reducing transponder bandwidth requirements. Our approach to cellular network design enables fast deployment and reduces operating expenses, particularly when utilized in conjunction with Comtech EF Data’s satellite modems.

Our unique multi-service access platform, the Memotec CX, is capable of multiplexing and grooming many types of traffic into the same modem interface with specific, pre-defined bandwidth and service guarantees, including:

> GSM access (Abis/Ater Interfaces)> Voice (digital or analog)> Internet Protocol (IP)> Time Division Multiple Access

(TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)

> Any bit transparent service

The CX also provides statistical multiplexing and link level encryption, while performing protocol adaptation to any kind of wide area network technology and interface (Digital, Serial Symmetric or Asymmetric, Ethernet). Highly flexible and versatile, this platform supports a wide range of voice and data interfaces.

Benefits of Cellular Backhaul

Via Satellite

Cellular services are bandwidth intensive, which can present challenges when backhauled or trunked via satellite. Additionally, satellite delay has an impact on cellular protocols, particularly TCP/IP-based applications. This problem can be compounded in 2.5G and 3G networks, as a result of constant handoffs.

Comtech EF Data designed GSM-enabled satellite modems capable of delivering optimal performance and spectral utilization at multiple layers. With the industry’s widest range of forward error correction, modulation formats and code rates, our satellite modems can provide the right combination to simultaneously optimize satellite transponder power and bandwidth.

We offer all traditional forward error correction (FEC) plus optional, advanced methods combined with higher order modulation that provide increased coding gain, lower decoding delay and significant bandwidth and power savings:

> Selection of modulation techniques - BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, 8-PSK, 8-QAM and 16-QAM

> Variety of Forward Error Correction - Low-Density Parity-Check Codes (LDPC)*, 2nd Generation Turbo Product Coding (TPC), Viterbi, Sequential, Reed-Solomon, Pragmatic Trellis Coding

*For more information on the enhanced power and bandwidth efficiencies provided with the combination of LDPC and 8-QAM, please refer to Comtech EF Data’s white paper.

For the CDM-600 and CDM-600L modems, we support two variants of Drop & Insert for cellular backhaul, providing flexibility to transmit/receive fractional parts of a T1 or E1 data stream.

Our revolutionary DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier is based on Applied Signal Technology’s patented “Adaptive Cancellation” technology that allows full duplex satellite links to transmit concurrently in the same segment of transponder bandwidth – doubling your throughput. This powerful technology is available in the CDM-Qx modem. And, when combined with our advanced forward error correction and modulation techniques, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier delivers improved satellite transponder utilization and unprecedented operating expense savings.

DoubleTalk™ Carrier-in-Carrier™Based on proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology, we offer a packet gateway plus a bandwidth and Drop & Insert optimization solution for digital GSM Abis Base Terminal Station (BTS) and Ater Base Station Controller (BSC) links. It removes non-value information, such as idle and silence frames, in each voice channel and extracts the Abis traffic from the TDM interface structure to create a data packet format, while statistically multiplexing GSM voice and data (signaling) channels. No transcoding is involved, therefore voice quality is preserved. And, with a progressive voice packet discard mechanism, degradation of voice quality under congestion can be minimized or prevented – maintaining the full voice channel BTS capacity.

The access platform also enables reductions in total cost of ownership for cellular backhaul over satellite by using asymmetrical design plus serial or IP interfaces to satellite modems, instead of digital D & I E1 interfaces. The CX can also be used to aggregate GSM and CDMA/TDMA BTSs, simplifying the migration from TDMA to GSM. In addition, the CX can act as a remote point of service for telephony, Internet access or banking services at the BTS or BSC location, plus locally terminating GSM phone calls to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) network.
