Welcome

We’ve been busy developing an exciting brochure of training courses and events running in the first half of 2016. Considerable time and effort goes into putting these programmes together and we hope that you enjoy what is on offer.

David Cummins provided maternity cover for us in 2015 and I’d like to thank him for his significant input, and continual enthusiasm. He ran an incredibly successful IP conference for us, and developed some excellent training materials around assessing children‘s vision.

Next year’s training courses focus on our patients. In this way we are making our education more relevant to everyday practice. Patients rarely come in with a specific condition (though an internet search can lead to an interesting self-diagnosis); they are much more likely to present with a symptom or sign: my vision’s blurred, I’ve got a red eye, I’m having headaches. Our courses will reflect this, and provide training in differential diagnosis and patient management.

In the same way, we are providing more training around systemic conditions and a patient’s general health. The ocular effects of systemic conditions are numerous, but a better understanding of common disease processes and frequently prescribed medication, can dramatically improve the way that we support our patients.

I cannot stress enough how important it is that you familiarise yourself with the SIGN glaucoma referral and safe discharge guideline. We’ve e-learning modules to support the guidance, and a series of courses in February and March to develop your skills. Pachymeters will be distributed by the Scottish Government to every practice by the end of March, and the training in the Glaucoma roadshow will teach you when central corneal thickness measurements are important

As always, most of our course bookings are through Portal. Places on some courses are limited but if demand is high we will run additional courses, so do book onto the waiting lists.

With very best wishes Dr Janet Pooley and Mr Donald CameronOptometry Programme DirectorsNHS Education for Scotland (NES).

GLAUCOMA ROADSHOW

The SIGN guideline on Glaucoma Referral and Safe Discharge was issued in March. You should be familiar with this guidance as it provides evidence based recommendations to support your practice.

Page 7: OPTOMETRY - NES · Pachymeters will be distributed by the Scottish Government to every practice by the end of March, and the training in the Glaucoma roadshow will teach you when

This course covers two key aspects of the guidelines in detail. It helps community Optometrists understand how to assess glaucomatous changes to the optic disc using the disc damage likelihood scale. It also covers using and decontaminating the pachymeter, and outlines the relevance of the central corneal thickness when considering the patient’s IOP. It will ensure that you are up to speed for when your practice pachymeter arrives by the end of March.

SYSTEMIC DISEASES

Patient centred care is so important, and as Optometrists we need to understand our patient’s underlying medical conditions, as well as what is happening in their eyes. This whole series of courses will help you achieve this goal.

Page 9: OPTOMETRY - NES · Pachymeters will be distributed by the Scottish Government to every practice by the end of March, and the training in the Glaucoma roadshow will teach you when

Systemic Diseases

These courses will help you understand the general medical conditions that are suffered by many of your patients. The most common conditions will be explored in detail, and their ocular complications will be highlighted.

The programme started this autumn with an introduction to some of these diseases and the webinars are still available to view on Portal (with CET points) if you missed any. Regional workshops to explore the implications to your practice will be running in May and June.

Learning Outcomes

• Recognise ocular manifestations of a range of systemic diseases.

• Understand the visual side effects of a range of medications.

• Communicate to the patient the impact that their systemic disease is having on their ocular and visual status.

• Learn how to work effectively with other healthcare professionals such as GPs, diabetic nurses, medical consultants in order to provide the best care for the ocular and systemic health of patients.

LaMP

The LaMP programme has been designed by NES to help you acquire knowledge of leadership and management, and to consider how this might influence your professional practice. It has already been very successfully adopted by Medicine and Dentistry, and is now being launched to support Optometrists.

Leadership and Management Programme

Page 11: OPTOMETRY - NES · Pachymeters will be distributed by the Scottish Government to every practice by the end of March, and the training in the Glaucoma roadshow will teach you when

We are excited to be launching LaMP for optometry

Is LaMP for me?The LaMP programme is for everyone! There is no need for any previous leadership or management training.

Why should I take part?Optometry in Scotland has gone through many changes in the last few years, and increasingly we are integrating with other areas of healthcare. These changes bring both exciting opportunities and potential challenges. This course is designed to help you think about how you can use effective leadership and management skills to impact on the development and improvement of your practice and the wider services you provide. It will increase your understanding of the personal qualities required for effective leadership, its importance in teamworking and the importance of effective management on resources.

What is involved? The LaMP Programme offers a blended learning approach which consists of:

Firstly, you will attend an introductory full day workshop. Over the next 4–5 months you will have the opportunity to complete a single e-Learning Module to help consolidate your learning. During this time there will also be a small project to complete, which will help you to take everything you have learnt and apply it directly to your own day-to-day practice. Finally, you will attend a second one-day workshop in which everyone will have chance to share their projects with one another and discuss how ideas can be developed further.

How do I take part? This is a small-group programme, so places are limited. There are two opportunities to take part in LaMP next year, these are the dates:

A minimum of 10 CET points will be available and a LaMP certificate will be issued on completion of the programme.

This is one of the few courses that is not available to book on Portal. For more details visit: www.lamp.nes.scot.nhs.uk

The Peer Assisted Learning Network has been growing across Scotland over the last year and there are now groups in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Dundee that are meeting 2–3 times a year to discuss issues, present cases and learn from each other’s experiences.

2015 Annual Conference

The month of September saw NES Optometry achieve a record number of optometrist delegates attending our annual conference which was held in the Beardmore Hotel just outside Glasgow.

Congratulations to our social media competition winner Alice McTrusty pictured (right) participating in our Visual Fields Quiz who won the model eye.And to also the winners who attended the Paediatric Discussion workshops: Archie Robertson (below) and Ruth Murdoch (below).

For those of you who have never attended a NES Optometry Conference here’s a run down of what happened this year…

A breakfast peer review kicked off the day early with a good selection of topics covered before Ewan Kemp presented his lecture: Oncology and the Eye.

Hands-on workshops are always well received and those who managed to get one of the limited spaces enjoyed practising the use of a selection of pachymeters whilst other optometrists participated in a video based paediatric discussion workshop with David Cummins and Carly Stoddart.

The AOP hosted an education stream on Staying on the Right Side of the Law just after lunch before everyone headed off for another selection of lectures or workshops such as disc assessment or our “Who wants to be a Millionaire” style quiz on Visual Fields with John Wild.

Familiarising optometrists with the challenges of treating patients with Autism whom they may not treat very often was tackled by Jim Taylor as the final thought for the day.

We hope you enjoyed attending and look forward to seeing you all again next year!

The glaucoma SIGN guidelines were published in March 2015. More details can be found on their website here: www.sign.ac.uk/guidelines/fulltext/144

The guidelines will have implications for the way in which all community optometrists in Scotland diagnose, manage glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

At NES we have developed a glaucoma e-learning course aimed at improving clinical skills and knowledge, and reinforcing the key recommendations of the SIGN guideline.

There are four modules attracting 1 CET point each and you can simply undertake whichever modules you feel you need.

The course includes short introductory talks, clinical skills videos, images and activities to reinforce your knowledge.
