Welcome to our 2013/14 NES Optometry Courses brochure. This year we’ve put together a national programme of courses with more opportunities for you to attend. We’re trying out national Webinars for the first time and running local Peer Review groups so that you can meet up and discuss cases with colleagues.
I would urge you to consider which courses will help you to improve the care that you provide to your patients. Try a course that will stretch you and help you learn; don’t necessarily go for the safe option. All of our courses are accredited with CET points where applicable, but it is improving your skills and knowledge that should be your target.
Peer Review/Discussion is now a mandatory requirement under the GOC CET scheme. We think it is an excellent way to learn and even if you’ve already been to a group recently, think about signing up on an ongoing basis. It is an interesting way to learn and a great way to get feedback and support from your colleagues. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the experience, perhaps make new friends and contacts, but most importantly improve your knowledge to help your patients.
As always, we’d be very keen to hear your feedback about any of the courses and training that we are providing. Our contact details are listed on the back page of this brochure. Enjoy looking through this new programme and remember that the bookings open on Portal on Thursday 22nd August 2013 (see page 19 for full details). We look forward to seeing you at our annual NES Optometry National Conference on Sunday 6th October 2013 in Edinburgh.

Binocular Vision
If your heart sinks when Binocular Vision is mentioned then book yourself on to this course. The introductory webinar will be led by an experienced Orthoptist, and will provide an opportunity to learn more about how Orthoptists diagnose, treat and manage binocular vision conditions, and develop a systematic approach to the assessment of patients presenting with signs and symptoms suggestive of a binocular problem.
The practical sessions will then allow you to put these techniques into practice on real patients, with a variety of conditions, with supervision by experienced Orthoptists to guide you through test selection, examination techniques, interpretation of results, and patient diagnosis and management.
The final webinar session will be an opportunity to come back to an Orthoptist with any questions, or to discuss cases you have seen following the course.
AimThese courses aim to improve your confidence in examining patients with binocular vision anomalies.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of the course you should be able to:
• Conduct a binocular vision assessment
• Understand when to refer a patient with a binocular vision problem
• Appreciate the urgency of any referral
• Confidently prescribe prisms where appropriate

Diabetic Retinopathy
Managing Diabetic Retinopathy in Primary CareThe prevalence of diabetes in Scotland has doubled in the past ten years with more people living with diabetes than with coronary heart disease. Diabetic retinopathy continues to be one of the leading causes of blindness in adults of working age and forms a large and increasing part of the Ophthalmology workload.
Our role in the diagnosis and management of patients with diabetes has changed in recent years. The purpose of this multi-session programme is to improve your knowledge of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, and to develop your skills when examining a diabetic patient.
Delivered through a plethora of modalities, including specialist lectures, quizzes, patient workshops and peer review, you can select the event/s which best suits your training needs. The course caters for all levels of experience and learning preferences.
AimThe aim is to make you a more skilful and confident practitioner when managing diabetic retinopathy in primary care.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this programme, you should be able to:
• Understand the disease process of diabetic retinopathy
• Grade diabetic retinopathy
• Identify diabetic retinopathy requiring referral into secondary care

Peripheral Retina
The Peripheral Retina ProblemWe are now dilating more patients than ever before in our practices, allowing us to see much further out into the peripheral retina. Are you confident in being able to diagnose what you see? The various elements of this programme address different aspects of the problem: what can be seen, how best to view the peripheral retina and how the ophthalmologists manage these patients.
Video Lectures
This series of short video lectures can be viewed any time at www.portal.scot.nhs.uk in the e-learning section. An interactive CET point can be obtained by successfully completing the linked exercise.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this course you should be able to:
• understand the signs and possible symptoms of peripheral retinal problems
• identify the difference between a PVD, retinal detachment, retinal tears and retinoschisis
• recognise the signs of a suspicious naevus and when to refer the patient
• understand congenital and ageing peripheral problems
• accurately refer a patient for further assessment and treatment
Regional CoursesHands-on workshops will allow you to practise different ways to examine the peripheral retina and vitreous using Volk lenses, head mounted binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy and the OCT (where available). Case studies and examples of peripheral retinal problems seen in the community and hospital eye service will also be discussed.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this course you should be able to:
• view the peripheral retina with various examination techniques
• understand presenting symptoms and signs of common peripheral retinal pathologies presenting in community practice
Book these courses online at NES Portal: www.portal.scot.nhs.uk

Eyesi Simulator SessionYou now have an opportunity to see exactly how much retina you have examined in a Head mounted Binocular Indirect Examination with the only Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope Simulator in the UK (http://www.vrmagic.com/simulators/eyesi-indirect/) which was purchased recently by NES Optometry. The simulator provides a safe learning environment where you can practise the technique and work through real retinal cases. These sessions will be arranged according to demand in the LOTT clinic, Edinburgh and will be limited to a maximum of 4 Optometrists supervised by an experienced Tutor. 3 CET points will be awarded per session.

Peer Review
Peer Review - Sign Up for a Local Group
Peer Review is now a mandatory requirement under the GOC CET scheme.
We’ve trained up a willing group of Facilitators all around the country and will be setting up local groups depending on demand. If you live in a remote and rural location we are happy to support you with video conferencing, so please don’t let this deter you from signing up.
3 CET points will be available for each peer review group that you attend and we are planning that each group meets at least twice each year. You will, at some time, be expected to present your own case.
To express your interest in joining a group please complete the application form at

Teach and Treat
Teach and Treat – Sign Up This Year!
The Teach and Treat Clinics based in hospitals provide high quality, relevant training to support your everyday practice. If you haven’t signed up yet, then I would urge you to take the plunge. The clinics are hands-on training sessions where you see hospital patients under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist. The clinics aim to provide you with exposure to ocular conditions which you may only rarely see in practice and to give you confidence in managing non-sight threatening conditions. It is also hoped that you will gain experience in decision making and clinical techniques as well as improving your communication skills.
Clinics are usually offered on a half-day basis for a minimum of 4 clinics over consecutive weeks. However, 24 half-day sessions are available if you need your IP experience and full-day clinics are available in Glasgow if that would be more convenient. The Teach and Treat Clinics are funded by NES Optometry and managed for us by local health boards.

GOS Competency
GOS Competency Training and Certificates
NES Optometry is taking over the responsibility for the training and issuing of certificates of competence to support the General Ophthalmic Services (Scotland) Contract. NES would like to thank Optometry Scotland very much for its interim support of this process. We are now holding the database of those who were issued certificates and so if you need a replacement we will be happy to issue you with a copy.
As you know, in order to practise in Scotland you require a competency certificate. At the present time, we will provide any training free of charge. Training will be offered in the use of slit lamp biomicroscopy, condensing lens biomicroscopy, applanation (contact) tonometry and threshold visual fields. This may involve one to one training or training in small groups. An assessment of competency will be conducted to ensure that you understand and are able to demonstrate the procedures required by the contract.
All enquiries and queries regarding the training certificates should be made to Shelagh McLeish ([email protected]).
Do you need to brush up on your competency skills? Are you moving to a practice with a Goldmann Tonometer when you previously used a Perkins? Are you finding visual field defects which are being discharged by the hospital? Book one to one training with an experienced tutor.Contact [email protected] to make an appointment.
