Congratulations on acquiring the Opus 1 - Spray Tanning Extraction Booth

Tanning Performance

A perfect spray tan is one that gives flawless, even coverage that accentuates the client’s features with

a natural sun-kissed colour. In order to achieve perfect results you need a quality spray tanning

application system. You may wish to consider, or have already purchased our new Hybrid Spray

Machine with your Opus 1 Extraction Booth, combining HVLP and LVLP technologies and providing

a unique application system that produces the finest atomisation of spray, preventing an over-wet

application, which is the cause of most problems associated with spray tanning.

Efficiently breaking down the particles is essential for the perfect application of tanning mist as it

prevents tanning solution grabbing dry and thicker areas of skin. Applying too much tanning

solution to a given area of skin or indeed the whole body can create undesirable results for the

client and messy treatment rooms. This often results in an unnatural looking tan, and one that

breaks down in patches requiring higher levels of aftercare.

The other result in creating this unique ultra-fine mist, is that the Hybrid Spray Machine uses less

tanning solution than the majority of systems on the market today – as little as 30ml per full body

with experience. This results in more tanning treatments per litre and therefore, more profit.

Crystals new Hybrid Spray Tanning Machine has been designed to work in perfect harmony with all

tanning brands on the market today, without exception and creating the means to provide a perfectly

even coverage over the whole body no matter which tanning solution is applied.

The Spray Gun is beautifully balanced, giving you complete control of movement. Colour can be

changed by easily switching between tanning liquids with virtually zero wastage.

With a continuous air feed, as with all HVLP systems, the line pressure operates at less than 6 psi.

There is no overheating of the system and therefore, the system can be left on all day. The biggest

difference you will experience when switching the unit on for the first time is the dramatic reduction in

noise level to that of all HVLP systems on the market today.

Finally, the new Hybrid Spray Machine has been designed to work in perfect harmony with the Opus

Starter, Opus 1 and Opus 2 Spray Tanning Extraction Booths. As the system is capable of atomising

the solution to much finer levels, the atomised spray remains airborne for longer and is much lighter,

making it much more sensitive to air movement. This gives more time for the extraction booths to

encourage overspray towards the extraction grills and retain the particles within their filtration systems.

Health & Safety

Many spray tanning operators perform applications in poorly ventilated conditions which causes the

repeated inhalation of over–spray by the therapist & client, and contamination of the treatment

room, creating a dirty, sticky and unhygienic environment.

The Crystals range of extraction booths, have been designed to meet tomorrow’s legislation - offering

excellent protection from the inhalation of atomised spray tan liquid. The unique extraction system

works precisely with Crystals state-of-the-art spray gun to draw overspray away from you and your

client’s face to ensure you both breathe uncontaminated air. Consistently high levels of hygiene are

easy to maintain with user friendly features like easy wipe surfaces and easily changeable filters.

With the entire range of booths that Crystals produce, contaminated air is pulled into the

extraction/filtration chambers at a rate of 1,000m³/hour. It is able to do this extremely quietly

compared to alternative extraction booths on the market today. Used in combination with the

Hybrid Spray Machine, it is the quietest offering in the tanning industry today, maintaining harmony

within your salon environment and not disturbing clients receiving treatments in adjacent rooms.

Opus 1 is a stylish extraction booth that fits nicely within most salon themes. It has been designed to

give a clean and almost clinical appearance with standard colours in Black & White. Alternative

colours are supplied to our tanning brand partners, some of which are exclusive to them. Either way,

the booth design and function remains the same and will be supported throughout its warranty by

Crystals.

Measuring W1,100mm x D750mm x H1,920mm, the Opus 1 weighs just 25kg in total and

constructed using lightweight materials that will not degrade over many years of usage. It assembles

relatively easily without the need to use tools and can be assembled straight out of the box,

preferably by 2 people. In less than 8 minutes from the time of opening your first box, your Opus 1

could be ready for your first treatment. Just one domestic power socket is required to power up the

Opus 1 and can be switched On/Off at the plug socket, using very little power consumption in the

process.

In order to maintain your Opus 1, simple wipe down procedures are required at the end of the day

with a water-damp cloth and filters changed every 80 tans (1st stage), every 240 tans (2nd Stage) and

every 480 tans (Exhaust Filter). Crystals extraction booths are the only booth design that includes 3

stages of filtration, ensuring that any overspray pulled into the filtration system is captured effectively

and that exhausted air from the rear of the booth is clean.

Create The Experience

These days you hear about brands talking about promoting their customer experience. It’s no longer

simply about delivering a product but about the client’s feelings and emotions provoked when

interacting with a brand. The equipment designs adhere strictly to many of Crystals core values -

market leading tan application quality, strong ethical health related policies and striking, cutting edge

aesthetics that set Crystals equipment designs apart from other equipment manufacturers.

Importantly, we make this available to everyone without compromise or prejudice and have a number

of tanning brands enjoying our service.

Please Note - IMPORTANT

Opus 1 is delivered to your salon in 3 boxes, securely packaged upon a wooden pallet to prevent

damage during shipping. If your Opus 1 arrives at your salon in separate boxes from anyone else

other than Crystals and not secured to the wooden pallet, you MUST contact Crystals IMMEDIATELY

before opening any of the boxes on 01620 828940. We will then guide you through the unpacking

and assembly procedure whilst together, checking for possible damage. You may be asked to take

pictures and email then during each stage of unpacking. Failure to do this may incur additional costs

to the salon if the equipment is found to be damaged without following our instructions, or Crystals

seeing the original condition of the boxes using photographic evidence. It may also result with a

delay in getting your Opus 1 up and running as we operate a ‘return to factory’ policy to check for,

and repair any damage. In such circumstances, Crystals will not provide a replacement unless the

correct procedures have been followed over the phone, immediately following delivery.

OPUS 1 – Assembly Instructions from the Box

Your Opus 1 Extraction Booth is delivered to your salon/spa upon a wooden pallet in 3 boxes, each

box weighing 10kg, 10kg and 20kg.

The system is pallet delivered in order to protect the unit from possible courier damage. Please read

last paragraph on Page 3 before opening any boxes.

Box 1 contains - Top Extraction Chamber, Power Lead.

Box 2 contains - Bottom Extraction Chamber.

Box 3 contains - 2 x Upper Side Panels, 2 x Lower Side Panels, 1 x Rubber Floor Mat, 1 x Plastic

Floor Tray, Roof Piece & Fittings and Filter Insert Tool.

Before moving boxes from the wooden pallet, please note: -

1. Check the serial number on each box matches. If not, please contact us immediately.

2. Ensure all boxes are handled carefully. We advise 2 people are used to unpack and assemble.

3. Do not handle the boxes by dropping them on their ends. This will cause damage to the

internal workings of the extraction chambers.

4. Check each component as they are removed from their box for damage and check against

the checklist provided on the larger box. If you identify any damage, or are unable to locate

one of the parts against the checklist, please contact us immediately.

5. Carefully remove components from their boxes.

Assembly of the extractor booth is very easy and will take you no more than 8 minutes to complete

for the first time. Once experienced, the extractor booth can be assembled in less than 3 minutes.

Installation Procedure

See pictorial instructions on page 6 for assistance.

1. Lay down the Plastic Floor Tray into the desired location within the treatment room,

specifically suited for corner room location, and ensure that the face with the cut V-Grooves

is on the underside. (Fig 1) The area required is 1.2m width x 1.15 depth. Remove any

protective film. Note: In some cases, the Rubber Floor Mat is adhered to the top face of

the Plastic Floor Tray – do not try to remove this. If the Rubber Mat is not adhered to the

tray, move to Step 2.

2. Lay down the Rubber Mat onto the Plastic Tray so that the tread-grip surface of the Mat is

upper-most. This may already be adhered to the top face of the Plastic Tray. (Fig 1)

3. Position Lower Extraction Chamber onto Floor Mat. (Fig 2) The lower chamber weighs less

than 9kg making it extremely easy to handle. Ensure that 5mm of Base Floor Panel can be

seen around the rear edges of the Chamber and that the clamping mechanism is located at

the top of the Base Chamber.

4. Remove all protective film from both faces and then locating the Lower RH Panel, align the 2

pins at the rear of the panel with the 2 receivers located on the rear side of the Bottom

Chamber and carefully slot together. As these slot into place, ensure the location pin at the

Page 5: OPUS+1+Instruction+Manual+2012

bottom front edge of the Lower RH Panel is located into the receiving hole of the Plastic

Tray. (Fig 3)

5. Remove all protective film from both faces and then locating the Lower LH Panel, align the 2

pins at the rear of the panel with the 2 receivers located on the rear side of the Bottom

Chamber and carefully slot together. As these slot into place, ensure the location pin at the

bottom front edge of the Lower LH Panel is located into the receiving hole of the Plastic

Tray. (Fig 4)

6 . Lift Upper Extraction Chamber and locate onto Lower Chamber by locating the 2 flat pins on

the underside of the Top Chamber, into the 2 holes on the top face of the Lower Chamber

(Fig 5). Once in position, clamps are provided either side of the chambers allowing the 2

chambers to be secured to each other. Position each latch over the keeper plate fixed to the

Top Chamber and then rotate the clamp handles to clamp in position (Fig 6). Once the clamp

is rotated and locked in position, clamping the top chamber with the grabber latch over the

keeper plate, you then hinge the handle downwards to neatly clamp Chambers (Fig 7).

7. At this stage, it is perhaps best to insert the 2 plugs into the receiver sockets at the RH

Rear of the Chambers. Ensure these are firmly inserted. This is important if the booth is

being fitted into a corner space as access will be limited when assembled. (Fig 8)

8. Remove all protective film from both faces and then locating the LH Upper Panel, align the 2

pins at the rear of the panel with the 2 receivers located on the LH side of the Top Chambers

and carefully slot together (Fig 9). During this procedure, ensure that the bottom curved

edge of the Upper Panel is inserted into the slot of the black location strip located around

the top edge of the LH Lower Panel. As this is being located, guide the Receiver over the

Location Pin located at the front edges of the 2 panels. This may take a bit of practice to get

right but is important to achieve.

9. Remove all protective film from both faces and then locating the RH Upper Panel, align the 2

pins at the rear of the panel with the 2 receivers located on the RH side of the Top Chambers

and carefully slot together (Fig 10). During this procedure, ensure that the bottom curved

edge of the Upper Panel is inserted into the slot of the black location strip located around

the top edge of the RH Lower Panel. As this is being located, guide the Receiver over the

Location Pin located at the front edges of the 2 panels. This may take a bit of practice to get

right but is important to achieve.

10. Place the Roof Panel into position (Fig ), locating the 2 holes of the Roof Panel Bracket over

the 2 threaded holes within the Upper Chamber. (Fig ) Using the 2 thumb screws, secure the

Roof Panel to the Upper Chamber (Fig 11).

11. The extractor booth is nearly ready for operation. Finally, make any adjustments to the

position of the booth within your treatment room.

13. Insert the plug into your wall socket and the booth will start extracting throughout the entire

front face of the extraction chambers. You may wish to check this operation by holding a

tissue against the front faces of the booth and releasing the tissue. The extraction chambers

will hold the tissue in position.

In order to get the best performance out of the Extraction Booth, it is extremely important that you

and your staff maintain the equipment on a daily and weekly basis. Like any piece of equipment,

Page 6: OPUS+1+Instruction+Manual+2012

failure to do so can often lead to problems in the long term and in some cases, may lead to

equipment failure.

Front & Secondary Filter Replacement Procedures

The air management system is used to extract excess spray away from the client by pulling it through

the extraction chambers. Excess spray is filtered out of the airflow using a comprehensive dry filter

system located within the extraction chambers. You will be required to periodically replace the Primary

Filter. This is a removable fibrous white filter located within the removable front panels of the extraction

chambers. These 1st Stage Filters require changing every 80 spray tans.

1. Using a Flat Blade Screwdriver, turn the 3 silver screws anti-clockwise to release the Top Filter

Panel and 4 screws for the Bottom Filter Panel (Fig 1). These are quarter-turn screws, clicking

when released.

2. Wearing protective gloves remove the front Filter Faces from the Chambers and pull out /

dispose of, the dirty filters from the slot (Fig 2). You will notice a secondary white filter (2nd

Stage Filter) is located behind the removable panel. This requires changing every 3 months

(based on 240 applications).

3. Using the white plastic Filter Insert Tool, dig the point of the tool into the middle end of the

replacement filter (Fig 3). You are able to use this tool to push the filter through to the full

depth of the removable filter panel.

4. On completion, replace the Removable Filter Panels by aligning the Swell Latches with the

holes of the Extraction Chambers and inserting to the holes (Fig 4). When the panel is located

correctly, use the Flat Blade Screwdriver to secure the panels in position by turning a quarter

turn clockwise, hearing a ‘click’ when done. As previously stated, white primary filters need

changing every 80 applications. Secondary white filters located behind the removable panels,

(Fig 5) require changing every 3 months or 240 spray tans.

BEWARE: If a system is returned for maintenance, service or repair and found to have excessive

solution build-up on the filters Crystals reserves the right to cancel any warranty that

may remain on the system.

DO NOT use washable filters as this will void your warranty.

Fault Rectification – Hints & Tips

At some point during operation of the Opus 1 Extraction Booth, you may experience a problem with

the operation of the equipment, or may simply be seeking advice on how to maintain Opus 1 for

operating at optimum performance.

DO’S & DONT’S

DO set up the system in a well lit area.

DO ensure system is always clean prior to set-up. Hygiene and cleanliness are extremely

important to your client’s health and your reputation!

DO NOT leave system plugged in if unattended.

DO NOT modify any part of the system.

DO NOT apply a spray tan without turning on the extraction. You could contaminate the

immediate environment and increase the risk of inhalation of airborne solution.

DO NOT spray into the extraction booth without filters in place.

FAQ

Q. My Opus 1 does not seem to be extracting at the rate I expected.

A. If you are using a HVLP spray machine and have not been trained in spray technique specific to

the Opus 1, then it may be that you are holding the spray gun too far away from the client.

HVLP spray guns deliver air and product at a high rate and the further the gun is away from the

client, the larger the fan at the point it hits the body. This creates large amounts of overspray

which can be difficult for any extraction booth to manage. We would encourage you to spray

with the gun approximately 8 inches away from the body of the client, and increase the speed of

your spray strokes and try to spray in vertical strokes downwards. It is also important to point the

gun as you spray the client, towards the extraction chambers of the booth. For example, when

spraying an arm, do not pull the arm outside the confines of the spray chamber and spray across

the front face of the booth. Always try to keep the orientation of the gun, such that the gun is

spraying horizontally and not pointing upwards (resulting in spray escaping from top of booth)

and with the handle of the gun always pointing down to the floor.

Suggested Spray Technique

As a professional, you may already be well practised in the art of spray tanning however, the Opus 1

extraction booth operates best when using perhaps the simplest of all techniques: -

With your client ready to receive their treatment, prepare your client so

they are initially facing towards you with their eyes closed. Using simple

vertical strokes (air cap horns in-line with the gun handle), holding the gun

approximately 8 inches away from the skin, apply a number of vertical

Page 9: OPUS+1+Instruction+Manual+2012

Revision: July 2011

strokes indexing around the contour of the face, starting on one side and ending up on the other side.

We estimate 4 or 5 strokes.

With the client facing you and with the gun approximately 8

inches away from the body, use vertical stokes to apply tan to

the neck area, top of shoulders with gun pointing slightly

downwards, along the lengths of the arms from shoulder to

wrist and asking the client to rotate their arms slightly in order to

apply tan to the inner and outer arms. While maintaining a

relaxed posture with arms & legs slightly apart, use vertical

strokes to apply tan solution onto the torso. Starting from one

side and indexing in steps to the other side, you should apply

even coverage whilst pointing the gun always towards the

extraction chambers. Finally apply the same technique to

spraying the legs, moving around each leg in vertical strokes

and stopping at the ankles. We would advise not trying to spray

the feet at this stage.

Ask your client to turn and face to the side, raising their nearest

arm to you in the air, and bring their furthest leg from you

forwards as shown in the diagram. This enables you to spray

under the arm and the inside of the far leg with ease. Using the

same vertical stroke technique, spray in increments down the

side of the torso, making sure you are spraying into the armpit.

With the arm raised, the breast may also raise discreetly,

enabling you to apply tan under the breast. Use the same

technique to spray the outside of the nearest leg, and the inside

of the furthest leg away from you. Again, try to avoid spraying

the feet at this stage and stop short at the ankles. If the

underside of the arm is looking light, it is a good opportunity to

apply a couple of strokes to the underside of the arm.

Ask your client to turn and face to the other side, raising their

nearest arm to you in the air, and bring their furthest leg from

you forwards as shown in the diagram. This enables you to

spray under the arm and the inside of the far leg with ease.

Using the same vertical stroke technique, spray in increments

down the side of the torso, making sure you are spraying into

the armpit. With the arm raised, the breast may also raise

discreetly, enabling you to apply tan under the breast. Use the

same technique to spray the outside of the nearest leg, and the

inside of the furthest leg away from you. If the underside of the

Page 10: OPUS+1+Instruction+Manual+2012

Revision: July 2011

arm is looking light, it is a good opportunity to apply a couple of

strokes to the underside of the arm.

Ask your client to turn and face the rear of the booth and

assume a position where the arms and legs are slightly apart

with palms of hands facing you, or pointing towards the floor

with fingers forward. Spray the back of the neck using vertical

strokes and onto the top of the shoulders. Spray vertically down

the back of the arms followed by steady long strokes from the

top of shoulders down to the knickers line, indexing around the

torso of the body in the process to apply an even coverage.

Finally, apply the same vertical stroke technique for each leg,

stopping short of the ankles. We always advise standing back at

some point and looking for areas which may have not been

sprayed, allowing you to re-apply.

Although it is not essential for the final outcome of the tan following showering, you may wish to apply

a second coat of tan. This will increase the depth of the guide colour upon the skin and give the

appearance of a darker tan. The risk here is, that when the client showers in 8 hours or so, the tan may

appear to them to them to be too light. The skin is only able to absorb so much DHA, irrespective of

the appearance of the guide colour. This can sometimes result in disappointment for the new client

being sprayed for the first time. Our advice is to simply apply a quick second coat to areas of the body

that would generally see the sun, (face, tops of shoulders, arms and maybe the legs). Quite often with

many of the tanning solutions on the market today, applying one coat or two coats, will result in the

same colour after showering.

Finally, you will need to finish off the tan by applying a light coat to the hands. With fingers apart and

bent like a claw shape, apply a quick and light coat to the hands. This may also be required for the feet

by holding the gun approximately 2 foot away from the feet and lightly applying tan. Too much tan on

the hands and feet can result in problems once showered off and as the tan wears off over the next

few days. Keeping this coverage light will help avoid such problems.

Summary

Opus 1 should last you many good years of operation. When using the correct spray technique and

ensuring filters are changed on a regular basis, overspray will be kept to a minimum within your

treatment room.

Your clients will want to be treated in a clean environment, and environment which says to them you

have their best interests at heart. Please ensure you clean your equipment at the end of each day to

avoid a gradual build-up of residual old tan. As old tan dries off, it becomes sticky and smelly. Add to

Page 11: OPUS+1+Instruction+Manual+2012

Revision: July 2011

the fact that the human body sheds skin and hair during treatment, this will accumulate with the old

tan and create potential hygiene problems. This is all avoided with regular cleaning.
