First, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to 2013.

I am proud to say that 2012 was a great year for OQHA. I would like to thank all of those who supported Ohio throughout the year by attending our shows, including the All American Quarter Horse Congress, and I hope everyone enjoyed the Year-End Awards Banquet. With election results in, I would like to congratulate all elected and appointed officers and directors and I am very excited and grateful to be serving again as OQHA President in 2013. I look forward to working with all new and returning board members to continue the success of our association. OQHA is already planning for the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress, and our Futurity and Sweepstakes Entry Books have already been mailed. We are rolling out a brand new halter futurity: the Congress Breeder’s Challenge Futurity - Halter Division, so make sure to read up on all the details! We are thrilled to introduce this program at the Congress, and believe it will be very successful and a wonderful way to showcase the halter discipline. OQHA Celebrates Successful 2012By Connie Lechleitner

A little snow and cold weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm as OQHA members celebrated 2012 during the

association’s annual meeting and banquet, held February 2 at the Ramada Plaza in Columbus. OQHA’s 2013 election results were announced during the association’s annual membership meeting on Saturday afternoon. Chris Cecil Darnell, who stepped into the role of president last August after then president Dr. Scott Myers was named OQHA’s executive vice president, began her first term as the elected president of OQHA at the annual meeting. She is the second woman president of OQHA, following the late Shirley DeLorean. Vic Clark, of Shelby, Ohio, was elected first vice president. He served as the association’s president from 1997-1998. As part of his position as first vice president, he also will serve a one-year term as a Congress Tri-Chairman, joining Skip Salome and Denny Thorsell in the Tri-Chairman’s role. Hank Clason, of Medina, Ohio, was re-elected as second vice president of the association. Six OQHA members were elected to three-year terms on the board of directors, including Lisa Alley, Shawn Flarida, Roger Landis, Brent Maxwell, Don Recchiuti, and Todd Salome. Ron McCarty was named an honorary director, and Jeff James was appointed to fill the remaining year on McCarty’s term on the board. Five members were appointed to one-year board terms, including Rod Atherton, Candi Fites, Chuck Smith, Greg Tordoff and Mike Vargo. During the association’s annual membership meeting, officers and directors reflected on a year that began with the resignation of then executive vice president Cam Foreman and the resulting executive search and hiring of Myers; the second largest AQHA trail ride in the country; the largest and most financially

successful All American Quarter Horse Congress in history; and successes by Ohio’s youth, amateur, Select amateur and open members at the state and national level. Darnell reflected on the smooth transition in spite of the changes the association made during 2012. She thanked the board of directors, executive committee and Congress Tri-Chairmen for their work, and awarded each director with a commemorative belt buckle. In his executive vice president’s report, Myers noted that the board of directors faced its rough start to the year by coming together and “riding the brand” by working in the best interests of the association. “We had a number of challenges early in the year, but we had to look at them as opportunities to improve our association,” he said. “OQHA has a large board of directors with 36 members, and although some may say it’s too large, I believe the board’s size is an asset more than a liability,” Myers said. “We have such a diversity of expertise and depth of knowledge. Our board is unparalleled in our industry. I think the board should be commended for its work over the past year, and I believe history will judge us by what we accomplished in 2012.” Myers noted that challenges remain for the association. “We still have economic uncertainty, and we have an evolution of the horse show culture occurring,” he said. “Although we have to be conservative, we must also stay at the cutting edge of the industry and at times go beyond our comfort zone. Long range planning is crucial.” Following the banquet dinner, OAQHA officers and directors unveiled a new concept for the 2013 Buckeye Classic AQHA show, which will feature free entries for amateurs, Novice amateurs and Select amateurs, thanks to the generous sponsorship of OAQHA’s corporate partners. The show, which will be held July 25-28 at Eden Park Equestrian Center in Sunbury, is being co-hosted with Buckeye Western Horse Association. Leah Moore, of Farmersville, Ohio, was crowned the 2013 OQHA Queen. The senior education major at Miami University won both the horsemanship and interview portions of the contest. First runner-up was Alicia Meeks, of Medina. Also during the awards banquet, Darnell presented president’s awards to Congress Tri-Chairman Denny Thorsell and Executive Vice President Search Committee Chair Elizabeth Gorski. She also recognized Executive Director Dr. Scott Myers. Ohio’s youth were treated to advice and input from four national AQHYA officers during the OQHYA annual meeting and awards banquet. AQHYA President Mark Mowbray and Vice President Jordan Boyd attended the day’s events along with Ohio’s Bailey Mierzejewski, secretary, and Lauren Diaz, sentinel. Following the distribution of awards, members enjoyed music with a DJ and a karaoke contest.

Region Four Championship Show Suspended, Alternatives Listed to Qualify for Novice Championship Show

As you may already know, the Region Four Regional Championship Committee, comprised of representatives

from affiliates Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario and West Virginia, was forced to make the difficult decision to suspend the 2013 Region Four Championship Show. Due to the change in the calendar, the Ohio State Fair dates moved forward and eliminated the possibility of hosting Region Four in Columbus. The committee looked at other dates at the Ohio Expo Center, however, there were conflicts with existing shows. The Committee wanted to be respectful of established shows that were in conflict with options for the Region Four Championships, as many of these established shows are integral to the affiliate associations in numerous ways and would jeopardize their year-end awards, futurity programs, world show qualifying and financial status. The committee also looked at other facilities within Ohio and in other states in the region, and could identify no locations/facilities that could accommodate the show. The committee also looked at combining the Region Four Championship with an existing show. All investigations lead to dead ends, so the committee unanimously made the difficult decision to suspend the show in 2013, but to immediately start exploring locations and facilities for 2014. The committee, as well as all workers at the show, volunteer their time with no compensation. Some judges also donate their time. The OQHA office has handled all correspondence and pre-entries, and supplied the computer system for the show at no charge. Alternative Ways to Qualify for AQHA Novice Championship Shows Several questions have been raised by Ohio exhibitors who planned to use the Region Four Regional Championship Show to qualify for AQHA’s 2013 or 2014 Novice Championship Show. Regional Show Hardship: Since Region Four is not hosting

its regional championship in 2013, exhibitors may obtain a hardship permit through AQHA to compete in another Regional Championship Show. Other Regional Championship Shows near Region Four include Region Three, Minnesota State Fairgrounds, St. Paul, MN, July 17-21; Region Five, TBD; Region Six, Eastern State Exposition, Springfield, MA, July 18-21; Region Nine, Ike Hamilton Expo Center, March 21-24; Region Ten, Jacksonville Equestrian Center, Jacksonville, FL, May 16-19. National Qualifying: Please note that the national qualifying period for the 2013 Novice Championship shows began May 1, 2012, and runs through June 30, 2013, so any top ten placings earned at a Regional Championship show that occurred after June 30 will count toward the 2014 Novice Championship show. In-State Qualifying: To qualify in-state for 2013 Novice Championship shows, Novice Youth and Novice Amateur exhibitors must be a member in good standing with OQHA and AQHA and be a resident of Ohio. The in-state qualifying system includes: • Placing under a minimum of ten judges at OQHA-approved show between April 1 and June 30, 2013; • Accumulating points on a one-horse, one-rider basis; • Awarding one point for each horse the exhibitor defeats, with a maximum of 30 points awarded for each class; • Determining the outcome of ties first by the exhibitor placing in the most shows during the qualifying period and second tiebreaker by the exhibitor having the most first place wins; • Submission by OQHA of the names of the top three point-earning exhibitors in each of the qualifying Novice class to AQHA by August 1, 2013. OQHA Plans Annual Trail Ride for August 16-18By Connie Lechleitner

In 2012, OQHA teamed up with the Tri-County Trail Association in East Sparta, Ohio, and produced the second-

largest AQHA trail ride in the country behind only Indiana. In 2013, the ride will return to East Sparta, August 16-18. After attracting some 125 riders last year, the trail ride committee hopes to attract even more participants in 2013. “Ohio used to have the largest trail ride in the country, and it was great to bring it back again last year,” said Todd Salome, who chaired last year’s event. He noted that the trail ride is open to all breeds of horses, and membership in OQHA, AQHA or OHC is not required. The 2013 ride will begin with dinner on Friday evening, followed by breakfast Saturday morning and lunch on the trail or at camp. Riders have a choice of a five-hour or two-hour guided trail ride on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday night, everyone can enjoy a dinner that will include a bonfire, hayride, silent auction, entertainment and awards. “Last year we had 160 people join us for dinner,” Salome said. “It was a really nice evening for everybody.”

The weekend will continue on Sunday, when riders will be treated to breakfast and lunch plus a guided trail ride. The entire weekend cost is $85 per rider with multiple rider discounts available and a $10 reduction in price if booked prior to August 7. In addition to riding the trails, riders will also have the opportunity to compete in the $1000 Jim Wells Memorial Trail Challenge. In a judged competition, riders will maneuver through obstacles for cash and awards, with three levels of competition for youth and amateurs. A limited number of horses will be available to rent for the trail ride, and for those bringing their horses, tie-lines and portable corrals are allowed. Tri-County Trails offers primitive camping, but full amenities are also available at Bear Creek KOA, just a short distance away. Equine Affaire to Celebrate 20th Anniversary in Columbus April 11-14

Equine Affaire will celebrate its 20th anniversary for the Ohio

event by presenting its popular musical celebration of the horse, the Fantasia, in three performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and with a new Marketplace for consigned horse-related items.

All Fantasia performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Coliseum on the Ohio Expo Center. The performances are designed to highlight the beauty, grace, intelligence and athleticism of the horses and the special connection humans share with them. “I am always reluctant to reveal in advance the lineup of performers retained for the Fantasia because I believe that the anticipation and element of surprise are part of what makes the event so entertaining,” said Eugenia Snyder, Equine Affaire’s founder, “but I can report that Fantasia fans can expect to be wowed by presentations that will run the gamut from slow-paced to frenetic and dramatic to comedic and some of the foremost professional equestrian performers in North America.” The performances will include everything from the Ohio Haflinger Ridden Drill Team to Vitor Silva’s Andalusians performing airs above ground to reining legend Doug Milholland and Yvonne Barteau peforming a freestyle dressage pas-de-deux. Jousters competing in full metal suits will also perform along with unique aerial acrobatics by Sasha Nevidonski.

In addition to the evening performances, attendees at Equine Affaire can take in more than 230 different clinics, seminars and demonstrations by well know trainers, competitors, coaches and other industry professionals. The event will feature a youth pavilion, breed pavilion and horse and farm exhibits, a Versatile Horse and Ride competition as well as the new Marketplace featuring consigned items for horse and rider. The Marketplace at Equine Affaire will be located in the Center of the Bricker Annex during the show and will provide consignors the opportunity to market their unwanted items up to four days to the thousands of Equine Affaire attendees. Registration is required, with a pre-registered fee of $5 or $10 if you register at the event. There is a maximum of 15 items consigned. The Marketplace will retain a consignment fee in the amount of 35 percent of the purchase price of each item sold at a price of $200 or less, 30 percent of the purchase price of each item sold at a price of $201-$499, and 25 percent of the purchase price of each item sold at a price of $500 or more. The consignment fee will be based on the selling price before taxes and will be deducted from the total amount paid to you. (The Marketplace will collect all required sales taxes on behalf of consignors and forward this tax revenue to the state.) Tickets for Fantasia range in price from $12 to $25 plus a handling fee. From the first show last April until the last one in September, last year’s OQHA all-around winners put plenty of elbow

grease, practice and shine into the 2012 show season, and have the hardware to prove it following last month’s award banquet. Let’s learn more about the best of the best from 2012. Horse of the Year, HF Tahnee Too, Jamie Watson

HF Tahnee Too went to a total of 12 horse shows in 2012, but she showed well enough to earn OQHA’s Horse of the Year award and a whole lot more for owner and trainer, Jamie Watson, and daughter Lacy, of Goshen. “We got her three years ago, and she just knew how to do Western Pleasure at that point,” said Jamie Watson. “Last year was just her second year to do the all around events, so our plan was really just to

get her out and going in the all classes. We just went to some of the Ohio shows, and not a lot, so this award was a real surprise to us.” Starting with their first horse show of the year in 2012, however, the Watsons knew they had something special. “Lacy’s first show with her was the March To The Arch, and they earned about 55 AQHA points and the 14-18 all-around,” Watson said. “Things just kind of happened from there. She’s just been extremely consistent for such a green horse, and when we were teaching her the different events, she was very easy. I think that’s why it worked out so well so quick.” Along the way, Tahnee has earned AQHA Superior awards in Youth Showmanship, Youth Horsemanship and Trail, and a 2012 AQHYA World Championship in Horsemanship. Unofficially, the pair finished in the top ten in the nation in several youth events last year. “She’s quite the princess,” Watson said of the last foal out of Tahnee Zippo and by One Hot Krymsun. “She likes to do things her way.” In 2013, the Watson family doesn’t plan to do much different with their show schedule, but it will be a year of transition. “Lacy’s first show this year will be the March To The Arch again, and she’ll be showing in youth events until she starts college in

August,” Watson said. Ohio’s loss will be Auburn University’s gain: Lacy will compete on Auburn’s NCAA equestrian team. Halter Horse of the Year, Shez Tricked Out, Stephen Torksi The late J. Stephen Torski, of Ashland, was strategic in his show plans for the 2012 show season. “Since we knew AQHA was doing some changes with the leveling program last year, I decided to show halter and maybe save some of my Novice eligibility for another year,” he said in an interview in early February. “We set out to win the Halter Horse of the Year title, and so we hit all of the Ohio shows throughout the show season.” No stranger to campaigning for titles, Torksi was the AQHA Justin Rookie of the Year Select Amateur 50 and Over in 2009. “I’ve shown a little bit of everything over the years. In 2011, I was showing Novice Amateur Western pleasure, but I’ve shown halter for several years too,” he said. Torski’s show partner, Shez Tricked Out, or Delilah, was purchased after the 2011 Congress. “She’s pretty and she has great conformation,” Torski said. “She’s just a really easy horse to show, and everybody loves her. I’ve had halter horses in the past that were more difficult to show, but she’s really good. She can be a little snorty when she makes that walk from the barn to the arena, but once she gets into the arena, she knows her job.” During the 2012 year, Torksi and Delilah qualified for the AQHA Amateur Select World Show and Torski’s daughter Megan also qualified Delilah for the AQHA Amateur World Show. The pair also earned an AQHA Superior award in Open Mares and are unofficially in the top ten in the nation for 2013 in Open Aged Mares. “I have to credit Justin Bisel and his dad Paul for helping get Delilah to all the Ohio shows so that we could haul for this title,” Torski said. The OQHA News is saddened to report Torki’s unexpected death on February 26. Our condolences go out to the Torski family.


Green Horse of the Year, Dunit On The Range, Chelsea Martz When Chelsea Martz and her family purchased Dunit On The Range, or Rosco, in September of 2011, the gelding knew how to do Western Pleasure. “He was truly a green horse,” she said. ”We really started the year just schooling him on Trail and one thing led to another.” Judd and Jennifer Paul added Trail, Western Riding and Hunter Under Saddle to Rosco’s skill set,

and he blossomed. “He’s really a great minded horse, and he took to the Western Riding and Trail especially well. He picked it up really fast,” Martz said. Although she got to show the horse a handful of times, the Pauls piloted Rosco through most of the Green classes. “The Green Horse title just sort of happened,” Martz said. “We were really just showing him to get him ready for some of the big shows. This was sort of an unexpected surprise.” The title was somewhat bittersweet for Martz, because Rosco was sold at the 2012 Congress. “He went to a great home, with one of Charlie Cole and Jason Martin’s customers, so he is in Texas now,” she said. In 2013, Martz will be busy showing her two mares, Eyell Be Outrageous in Amateur Trail and Amateur Showmanship, and Only The Best Chocolate in Amateur Western Pleasure. Amateur of the Year, Jordan Ferguson and Baileys N Chocolate

Jordan Ferguson, of Tipp City, didn’t start out the year with the goal of earning the Amateur of the Year title, but the idea started to gain momentum after she and her horse had a successful Winter Circuit. “We were maybe three or four shows into the year, and I hadn’t been paying that much attention to the points, and my trainer, Hank Clason,

said I should consider running for the title since we were doing pretty well,” Ferguson said. Ferguson, who is a sophomore majoring in marketing at Otterbein University and also competes on the college equestrian team, had owned her horse, Baileys N Chocolate or Bill for seven years, but due to other commitments, she wasn’t able to show very much in the AQHA circuit until last year. “I had a great Winter Circuit my first show out. I thought we might be rusty, but it was a pleasant surprise,” she said. “My home is in Tipp City and my trainer is in Medina, so being in Otterbein was actually about half-way in-between, so it worked out to be able to practice and show this year,” Ferguson said. “I’ve always been interested in all the pattern classes, but my favorite event has always been Showmanship,” she said. “This

past year, I showed in every event except for Western Pleasure.” During 2012, the pair racked up several Register of Merits, an AQHA Championship and a Superior in Amateur Showmanship, as well as several all around amateur titles. Ferguson describes Bill as a 17 going on three. “He doesn’t know he’s 17,” she said. “He’s really sweet and has a big personality, but he lets you know when he doesn’t like something. He loves to show, and shows really well for you if you treat him right.” In 2013, Ferguson plans to get to know her fellow amateur exhibitors a little better and continue to compete with Bill. “I’m planning to not show quite as hard, since Bill is getting older, but I also plan to keep having fun,” she said. Amateur Select of the Year, LuAnne Coleman and HF Pure Charlie 2012 was a bittersweet year for LuAnne Coleman and HF Pure Charlie, or Chuckie, because Coleman knew it would be her last year with her show partner. “When we bought Chuckie, he was a really green four year old,” Coleman said. “We’ve worked really hard with him over the years and he’s turned out to be a great horse. He wants to be the center of attention, and sometimes I don’t think he realizes he’s a horse. When you come into the barn, he talks to you, and he’s looking for a peppermint. He’s never bad and he always gives you 150 percent.” Coleman started the year early at the Florida Gold Coast with her trainer, Jamie Watson, and went to several out of state circuits in 2012. “We went to Florida for the first time, and we won the circuit in Trail. We did all the shows we could in 2012,” she said. “We showed in Halter Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Riding, Trail and Horsemanship,” she said. Along the way, the pair earned an AQHA Championship and Superiors in Green, Amateur and Open Trail and Amateur Showmanship. Coleman’s highlight of the year was placing 12th in the Select Amateur Horsemanship at the 2012 Congress. “That took a lot of work, because the day before we showed it was in the 70’s and the temperature dropped to the 40’s, and all the horses were fresh,” she said. “But he was really good.” Although Coleman is selling Chuckie, she is not leaving the show pen. After taking a short break to recuperate from foot surgery, she has a new horse, Only Zip For Now, or Elliott, who is learning to become an all-around horse. “He’s only been shown in Western Pleasure, but we’ve added Horsemanship, Trail and Showmanship so far,” she said. For 2013, Coleman plans to take time for Elliott to learn all his new roles, and perhaps go for a title or qualify for the World Show in 2014. “I have to thank Jamie for all her hard work with me, and also my husband, Gary, who takes time to be at the shows or be at home doing things so I can go and show,” Coleman said. “My family has been very supportive.”


High-Point Novice Amateur, Amanda Thompson and Rockin B Scotch

2012 was Amanda Thompson’s first year to show full-time on the AQHA circuit, and she made the most of it – even though she wasn’t actively seeking the all around award until three or four shows from the end of the show season. “I really had no thought at all about winning the all-around,” Thompson said. “I was just concentrating on improving my skills and stepping up to the

next level. Then one day my trainer, Debbie Arnold, said we were really up there in the points and should probably keep going.” Thompson had been showing horses since she was three, and together with her 15-year-old show partner Rockin B Scotch or Rocky, proved you can teach an old horse – and rider – new tricks. “I had mostly shown at open shows like the Ashland County Paint & Plain and the COOSA shows,” she said. “Debbie taught me a lot of things over the summer that just helped me improve in all my classes but especially Showmanship. We worked hard on it and in the latter half of the year we were able to place consistently in the top three. It was really rewarding to put the work into it and see the results.” Thompson noted that she really enjoyed the Ohio shows throughout the show season. “I think the show committees do an amazing job keeping the shows running so efficiently,” she said. “And receiving the saddle at the annual banquet was an honor I never thought I would receive, so thank you OQHA for giving such great prizes.” While juggling a two and a half year old son, a full time job with a software company in Westlake and 4-H advisor duties with her husband, Thompson plans to work on improving her pattern skills and become a better equestrian in 2013. “It’s going to be Rocky’s last year to show, so I want to finish it strong, and maybe go to some other circuits in Michigan and Indiana,” she said. All-Around Youth 13 & Under, Ellexxah Maxwell and Zips Bossy Chip

“Sometimes things go beyond all your expectations,” said Brent Maxwell of his daughter Ellexxah Maxwell’s 2012 show season with Zips Bossy Chip. The mare Ellexxah calls Annie B started out as just a horse brought to the Maxwells to resell. But something clicked between the mare and Ellexxah. “She didn’t like anyone else

riding her,” Ellexxah said. “I like challenges, so I basically trained

her. She was fun to train. When we started with her, she knew Hunter Under Saddle and had a few Hunt Seat Equitation classes, so we had to add everything else. She’s really a sweetheart, and she likes to play around a lot.” For the Maxwells, the original goal was for Ellexxah to show Annie B and get her acquainted with the shows and the all around events. By the summer, the points began to add up, and Ellexxah was leading the nation in Youth Performance Mares, and top five in the Youth All-Around standings. The pair earned three AQHA Supreme Championships, six Superiors in Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Showmanship, Hunt Seat Equitation and Halter and a Youth Performance Championship. They won the 2012 national title in Hunt Seat Equitation and Youth Performance Mares, as well as Open Performance Mares – and were named the reserve All-Around Youth in the nation. After taking a break in early 2013, Ellexxah and Annie B will be working toward placing higher at the AQHYA Built Ford Tough World Show (they placed eighth in Youth Performance Mares and third in 13 & Under Youth Performance Halter Mares, as well as third in 13 & Under Showmanship in 2012), and making another run at the Youth Performance Mares national title. All-Around Youth 14-18, Lauren Diaz and Promotional Asset Lauren Diaz didn’t have a set goal in mind when she started the 2012 show season. “It was only my second year in the 14-18, so I was just focused on trying to have a good season and concentrating on the AQHYA World Show,” she said. “But in about the middle of the year, I saw how far ahead I was in the lead that I decided to go with it and finish what I started.” Promotional Asset, or Chucky, had to work at it to get in good graces with the Diaz family. “The horse I had before Chucky had passed away, and I was out for a good year or so looking for another horse. Honestly, when we first found Chucky, I did not like him at all, my mom didn’t like him, my dad didn’t like him. But my trainer, Chad Piper, said he knew he was the one. I put my trust in him because I knew he wouldn’t let me down.” Now in their fifth year together, Diaz and Chucky have accumulated AQHA Superiors in Showmanship, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation and Western Riding, as well as a Performance Register of Merit. In the past two and a half years, they’ve earned more than 45 youth all-around titles as well as ninth in Showmanship and 15th in Performance Halter Geldings at the 2012 AQHYA Built Ford Tough World Show. The pair was ninth in the nation in the Youth All-Around standings last year. Diaz said her horse is just a big kid. “He has this ‘what do you want me to do now, mom?’ attitude,” she said. “He is always more than willing to please and get the job done. I feel safe with


him. He gives me a sense of security and I have 100 percent trust in him.” Diaz is excited for the 2013 show season to start. “My goal is to win the all-around again as well as move up in the standings nationally,” she said. “Of course I have high goals and expectations for myself, but I really just want to have a good season and keep moving forward. Having fun and getting to do what I love is more of an accomplishment than I could ever ask for.” High-Point Novice Youth Kayla Tomlison and Catch Some ZZZ

Like some of the other all-around winners, Kayla Tomlison didn’t start out the 2012 show season with the High-Point Novice Youth title in mind. “My goal at the beginning of the year was to just start doing the all around classes. I had a new horse, and it was my first year to

really get going into all the classes. At about the second show, my trainers, Cami and Matt Claypool, told me ‘you’re in the running for this,’ so we pretty much went to every show since then. The all around title just came out as a plus,” Tomlison said. “It’s been a great experience. Cami and Matt are amazing, and my friends and family have been super supportive.” Tomlison purchased Catch Some ZZZ or Little Dude as a two year old, and the pair started with Showmanship and Hunter Under Saddle, and added Trail, Horsemanship, Equitation and Western Pleasure last year. “Adding all the other classes helped us accumulate points, but my favorite is Showmanship,” she said. “I like that it’s always a different pattern to learn, and you have one shot to do it.” She describes Little Dude as very lazy. “He loves to eat, and eats a lot, and he looks at me with this puppy dog face like ‘do I have to?’” Tomlison said. “He’s always willing to do what every I

ask and he’s been great for me.” In 2013, Tomlison hopes to qualify nationally for the AQHYA Ford Built Tough World Show, go to Oklahoma City and have a great Congress and a great year overall. “We qualified last year for the World Show but didn’t go, so it would be fun to go this year,” she said. All-Around Small Fry, Madison Hashman Ten-year-old Madison Hashman set her mind to winning the All Around Small Fry award in 2012 and never looked back until she had accomplished it. “I had seen other kids showing in it before, and my friend Kaylyn Gimbel had won it last year, so I decided to go for it too,” she said. Hashman had always loved horses, but lived in town. Eventually her parents purchased an Appaloosa and she began taking riding lessons with trainer Nicole Beal. She purchased her Quarter Horse gelding Shorty last year. “He’s really fun and easy to work with,” she said. “He’s a lover – he gets along with everyone.” As she sat out to win the All-Around Small Fry, Hashman competed in Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation, taking the high point award for the year in each class except a reserve in Western Pleasure. “My favorite class is Horsemanship,” she said. “I really enjoy doing the patterns.” Throughout the 2012 show season, Hashman enjoyed traveling and spending time with her trainer. “It was fun to go to all the shows, and I lived over at Nicole’s all summer,” she said. “When I wasn’t staying there, I had a riding lesson every Sunday.” In 2013, Hashman will move up to the 13 & Under age group. “My goal this year is to make the SOQHYA Congress NYATT team and do well in my 13 & Under classes,” she said. PLANNING YOUR SHOW SEASON: What Shows are Best For You?

Ohio Trainers Share Their Decision-Making ProcessBy Connie Lechleitner

For some OQHA members, the 2013 show season has already begun, while others may just be starting to think about it. So

as you stare at the calendar, how do you plan your horse show schedule for the year? We asked some of Ohio’s professional trainers to take us through their decision-making process when planning their show season with clients. YOUTH AND AMATEUR CONSIDERATIONS

Brent Maxwell: It really all starts with the person’s goals and their skill level as well as the skill level of their horse. We want to take our clients where they can be competitive. If someone wants to haul for national high point title, you have to start early at the Florida and Arizona shows and hit those major circuits. Then, see where you are in the standings as you get part-way through the year. If the client’s goal is to earn a state year-end title, then you know you are going to be going to all of the

Ohio shows, and you prepare for that. The same thing with in-state qualifying for a youth team, you go to the Ohio shows in the qualifying period and prepare for your events. If you are a Novice exhibitor or you have a green horse, there are more opportunities to compete with horses of the same level of show experience in a particular event, especially with the addition of the leveling classes this year. The goal becomes one where you try to gain experience. It’s important not to mislead anyone when it comes to evaluating their skills and helping them show at a competitive level. There are two theories regarding Novice exhibitors. There are really no more single-judged shows anymore, so you only get one shot in most split-combined, double-judged classes. It takes a while to gain experience. Many of our clients show in more than one class so that if they don’t do well in one, they still have a chance in something else. For the Novice, a six-judge shows might not be the most economical show. However, when we do take novice clients to four-judge or six-judge shows, they get four or five days of riding and additional hands-on time with us, so they’re able to polish their skills in a shorter amount of time. So you have to weigh the benefits. You have to have realistic expectations, too. For example, if your goal is to qualify for the World Show, are you going for the

experience, or is your horse competitive? It’s OK either way, you just need to know that going in. As another example, if you are a seasoned rider and you’re developing a young horse into an all-arounder, your horse might not be competitive for a while. It takes time and it can be a big adjustment for someone who is used to winning on a seasoned horse. And remember, you can’t get seasoned at home. Your goal should be to get to the right shows that fit you and your horse’s ability, and your pocketbook. If we’re considering a new show, we research it. The easiest way is by going to the AQHA website and looking at last year’s show results. I may also ask other trainers about shows they’ve been too.

Dan Trein: One of the first things we think about when planning our show season is look geographically, especially at showing in Ohio and surrounding areas. We have the luxury of taking a lot of horses to the Ohio shows. They have good-sized shows and a high level of competition for many of our clients. But we also evaluate where to go based on the customers’ and their horses’ skill levels. We are also developing new horses to our program each year, and their seasoning and initial showing is

also a consideration. With those three things in mind, we have to attend shows that have the volume to justify the expense – because let’s face it, expense is a factor. We often start the year at the larger circuits like the Gold Coast. It gives us the opportunity to take some younger, less-seasoned horses and newer clients, and the time down there helps them hone their skills. We also take clients who have a goal to get nationally qualified for a world show there. Most important in both of these initiatives, when taking a varied group of clients, is that everyone understands why they are going to these shows and what their goals are. In February and March, our schedule is usually a little flexible. This year we went to East Lansing, and in the past we’ve gone to the Prairie Classic. It’s a chance to venture a little further away. We use these early shows to be ready for the Winter Circuit, when the youth team points begin. We work a lot on determining minimal loads of six, eight or ten horses per show for longer distance so that we can help our clients share expenses and make the trip more cost-effective. We


also need to work around the demands of individual customers, whether for amateurs, time away from work, or for parents and youth, time away from school. There’s definitely a level of juggling to accommodate everyone, and to give them the preparation and support they need at shows. We tend to schedule about 60 days out, and that way we can be flexible and better respond to everyone’s needs. Small weekend shows are the toughest to justify, because the costs are still there, but you may not get the volume in the classes to earn points. That’s tough to ask customers to do.

GETTING A HANDLE ON HALTER Randy Jacobs: Halter numbers have really dropped off over the past several years, so I have kind of developed a set of shows that I usually go to in order to get my clients’ horses qualified for the various world shows. For most of my clients, their goal is to qualify for a world show and to show at a couple of larger shows like the Quarter Horse Congress. I’ve kind of become a fair weather exhibitor, because I really won’t

start going out to the shows until April. I also try not to take doubles of a sex and age. That helps lessen conflict among customers. Anymore, I’m usually taking one stud, one mare and one gelding to show, where years ago I might have taken five or six horses, now it’s usually two or three since the numbers have dropped. We’re gaining halter points today from the Performance Halter classes, which is good, but it means you have to go grand or reserve to earn those points. I’ve been lucky in that I haven’t had to go very far to get horses qualified. The Ohio shows are good, Pennsylvania and Michigan too. I really haven’t been going to many futurities in recent years because the numbers dropped off so much, but we are starting to see a few larger futurities like the one in Iowa and the Big Money Futurity. Because I focus on the Congress and the World Show, I haven’t taken the risk to haul to Iowa a few weeks before that and risk a horse getting sick and maybe missing the Congress or World Show, or both. Years ago, I went to a lot more shows, as much as I could. Today, I’m probably in a unique situation because I have another business besides training horses.

FUTURITY PHILOSOPHY Randy Wilson: Really, right now I’m in the middle of evaluating my two-year-old prospects. First, I’m looking for the really special horse that can fill a Reichert or Masters slot. That is the hardest part, because it takes such a special horse. Then, I usually select the next best horse to enter in the Congress Coughlin Two-Year-Old Futurity. After that, I’m looking for a summer horse

that can show in some of the other major shows throughout the show season such as the Tom Powers. You don’t always end up with a horse for every slot. You look at the talent and movement, and for the ones that swing their leg every single day, that are strong and have good movement. You can’t be barn blind, and you have to be able to put the horse where it can be successful. I’ve had the best success letting the horse tell me when it’s ready. If I’m looking at a Non-Pro horse, time will tell you if it will work. Sometimes the best horse is just not Non-Pro suitable. They have to be quiet and handle things, but also have a lot of self-carriage so that the Non-Pro doesn’t have to worry about manipulating them to keep them together all the time. I also think the three-year-old classes are a great thing. Sometimes you have a really talented horse that is just fractious minded, or one that gets sore or hurt during its two-year-old year, and they can still do well as a Novice Three-Year-Old. As far as my show schedule, I just go to all the major events every year, and then I pick weekend shows to go to and be ready for the majors. If I have horses to qualify for the world shows, I try to get them out early and get them qualified, and still allow them a break before they show at their major events. For the younger horses, you can’t just go to two shows and then the futurity, you have to give them enough miles to get used to things. I switch out those young horses going to shows all the time to give each one the experience. By starting with your skill level and the skill level of your horse and building realistic goals for the year, you can begin to plan a show schedule that will be fun and competitive – and get you where you want to be. Four Ohio Youth to ride for NCAA Equestrian Teams

Four OQHYA members have signed National Letters of Intent to compete in NCAA Equestrian events for the 2013-14

season. Bailey Mierzejewski and Ashley Reichert committed to the University of South Carolina, Charley Thiel signed with the University of Georgia and Lacy Watson will ride for the University of Auburn. Mierzejewski and Reichert commit to South Carolina

The University of South Carolina began it’s equestrian program in 1997, and has been recognized as a top team for several years, winning four National Championships since its inception. Two youth from Ohio, Bailey Mierzejewski and Ashley Reichert, have committed to riding for the Gamecocks next year. “When the prospects come on an official visit we already know they can ride,” said Boo Major, USC Equestrian Head Coach.

“What we are trying to see is if they are a good fit for our team. We have a very tight knit group and if we add someone that is not going to fit in then there are going to be problems.” Bailey Mierzejewski, of Mt. Sterling, is finishing her senior year at Madison Plains High School, where she is actively involved in Spanish Club and Key Club and was inducted in the National Honor Society as a sophomore. She is currently serving as the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association President, and has been very active as both an officer and director of the association for the past several years. “Bailey is a great Horsemanship rider,” Major said. “She has been very competitive on the AQHA circuit and she fit right into our group when she came to visit. We had an instant feeling that she would be a great addition for us.” Mierzejewski focused on both the school’s academics, as well as the fit of equestrian team during her official visit. She plans to major in pharmacy, so the strength of that program was particularly important to her. In the end, it was the atmosphere of the University of South Carolina that won her over. “I know several of the girls on the equestrian team, and they all love it there,” Mierzejewski said. “All of the girls, coaches and USC staff are very welcoming and fun to be around.” Fellow OQHYA member Ashley Reichert, of Grove City, Ohio will also be attending the University of South Carolina next fall. “Ashley is a dual threat, having both Horsemanship and

Reining experience,” Major said. “We thoroughly enjoyed the recruiting process with her and her family. We also felt she would be a great fit for our team.” A very active youth member, Reichert was a member of the 2012 OQHA NYATT Team at Quarter Horse Congress in Hunter Under Saddle, and currently serves as secretary for the Eastern Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association. She also donates her time to Re-Ride Adoption, a program that assists in rehabilitating and placing unwanted Quarter Horses. Although she primarily shows in Hunter Under Saddle on the AQHA circuit, Reichert has experience showing on a local IEA team, where she competed in Western Horsemanship and Reining at the national level. Reichert has admired many NCAA riders over the years, and after speaking with several about their experiences, she knew she wanted to follow in their footsteps. She visited four schools numerous times, but fell in love with USC. “South Carolina was the first college I visited when I began my search the summer before sophomore year,” Reichert said. “I fell in love with the campus and coaches! At each school I visited, team members kept telling me, ‘you’ll just know where you should be and what fits.’ South Carolina really fits for me, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin my college career with them in the fall!” Overall, Coach Major is thrilled to have both young ladies attending USC next year. “Both girls are real leaders and come from a very competitive state as far as western riders are concerned,” Major said. “They were highly sought after by many institutions. We are very blessed to have them coming to South Carolina. The OQHA should be very proud of the quality youth riders they are producing.” Watson to ride for the University of Auburn Lacy Watson, of Goshen, Ohio, was among seven other riders that have declared their intent to ride with the Tigers for the 2013-14 season thus far, where she will join fellow OQHA members, Lucy Igoe and Katsy Leeman, who are both sophomores at the University of Auburn. Watson is currently completing her senior year at Goshen High School in conjunction with attending the University of Cincinnati for post-secondary college courses. She is currently

Youth Headlinesserving as the OQHYA Vice President, and her parents, OQHA Director Shane and professional trainer Jamie, are both active on the AQHA circuit. “Lacy has consistently won at the highest levels and handles competition well,” said Greg Williams, UA Equestrian Head Coach. “She is not only a world champion through her own talents, but was raised in the horse business as well. This can make her a very strong contender early.”

Lacy Watson has numerous Congress and World titles to her name, including Congress Youth All-Around in 2007, World Champion in Equitation Over Fences in 2009 and World Champion in Western Horsemanship in 2012. “As coaches, we liked the fact that even as a top level rider, she completely buys into, and looks forward to, the team-first attitude at Auburn,” Coach Williams said. “I look forward to having her on the Plains.” Thiel Signs with Georgia Bulldogs Charley Thiel, of Dublin, Ohio will compete in Reining for the University of Georgia Equestrian Team. Although known

for her success in Hunter Under Saddle, which includes back to back Youth World Championships in 2011 and 2012, Thiel is excited about showing in a western event. “I started showing in Reining about three years ago,” Thiel said. “When I learned about this opportunity, I knew right away that this is what I wanted to do - I was hooked!” A senior at Dublin Coffman High School, Thiel has been involved in several school plays and musicals, and is an active member of her church. She is currently serving as the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Reporter, and has represented OQHYA at the Youth World Show, AQHA Youth World Cup, and on the OQHA Congress NYATT Team. “I am blessed and thrilled to have Charley aboard our Western squad,” assistant Coach Mary Meneely said. “Charley is a very dedicated, passionate and competitive individual whom will be a tremendous asset to the University of Georgia equestrian team! She has loved Georgia from the first time she set foot on campus and the long wait has finally arrived as she is an official Georgia Bulldog!”

OQHYA Meets With AQHYA Officers, Elects 2013 Board

OQHYA reflected on an extremely successful 2012 show season that included electing two national AQHYA officers,

a World Cup participant, the second largest Youth World Show team to compete at the 2012 AQHYA World Championship Show and the reserve champion NYATT team at the 2012 Congress. AQHYA President Mark Mowbray and Vice President Jordan Boyd sat in the OQHYA annual meeting and reported on activities at the national level as well as provided input to Ohio activities. They joined Ohio’s own Bailey Mierzejewski, who was elected AQHYA secretary, and Lauren Diaz, who serves as sentinel. During the OQHYA annual meeting, 2013 election results were announced, with Charley Thiel elected as president, Lauren Diaz as vice president, Lindsay Brush as secretary, Kayla Magrum as treasurer and Brittany Harter as reporter. The 2013 OQHYA directors elected to a one-year term include Emma Brown, Caitlyn Colvin, Riley Herman, RJ Jacobs, Morgan Kessler, Paulina Martz, Ellexxah Maxwell, Bailey Mierzejewski, Hannah Overmyer and Nadia Sherman.

Youth Headlines Upcoming youth meetings will include March 18, April 15 and May 20. Youth Begin Quest for 2013 World Show, Congress Youth Teams Ohio youth who have the goal to make the state’s 2013 AQHYA Ford Built Tough World Championship Team and the Congress NYATT team may already be working on qualifying nationally for the World Show and will soon begin working on in-state qualifications for both teams. Youth exhibitors have until April 30 to qualify nationally for this year’s AQHYA World Show team, and in-state qualifying begins with points earned on Saturday, the 2013 Winter Circuit and runs through May 31. Those youth who wanted to qualify for the AQHYA World Show team in cattle classes, Equitation Over Fences or other classes not usually held at weekend AQHA shows were required to submit a declaration to the OQHA office by March 1.

OQHYA members who would like to participate on the association’s NYATT team at the Congress can also begin earning points toward the team at the Saturday show during the SOQHA Winter Circuit. Youth must accumulate at least ten points during the qualifying period, and the youth’s 10 best shows will be used for the tabulation. The NYATT team consists of two exhibitors each in Barrel Racing, Western Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure. To be eligible for either team, the member must attend a minimum of two OQHYA meetings between January 1 and July 1. The 2013 AQHYA Ford Built Tough World Championship Show will be held August 2-10 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress takes place October 4-27. 2013 Youth QualifyingBUILT FORD TOUGH AQHYA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWThere are three ways to qualify for the 2013 AQHYA Youth World Show:(1) Qualify nationally by earning enough points from May 1, 2012 through April 30, 2013. The number of points for each class is determined by AQHA, and can be found at www.AQHA.com. (2) Qualify in-state by being a current OQHA member residing in Ohio, attending two meetings and placing in a minimum of three shows, accumulating at least 10 points from the Saturday of the SOQHA Winter Circuit in March through May 31st. A youth’s 10 best shows during the qualifying period will count.(3) Declare your interest in showing in a class or classes that are not usually

offered at regular shows. Letters of interest must be sent on or before March 1, 2013 to the OQHA office.

CONGRESS NATIONAL YOUTH ACTIVITY TEAM TOURNAMENTAll OQHYA members are invited to compete for a spot on OQHA’s NYATT Team. In order to be eligible, youth must be a current OQHYA member residing in Ohio, as well as attend at least two OQHYA meetings between January 1st and July 1st. Youth must also place at a minimum of three shows, accumulating at least 10 points during the qualifying period of he Saturday of the SOQHA Winter Circuit in March and runs through July 31st. A youth’s 10 best shows during the qualifying period will count. Participating youth members may only show in one event in the NYATT competition.

OAQHA Well-Represented at 2012 AQHA World Show

The American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show is a pinnacle event for Quarter Horse

owners and exhibitors around the world. More than 3,590 entries from the United States, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, United Kingdom and the Netherlands are competed for 97 world championship titles at this year’s event, held November 2-17 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. During the OAQHA annual meeting on February 2 in Columbus, results from the election were announced.

Marla Atherton will lead the association as the 2013 president and will be joined by Justin Billings, first vice president; Abby Pound, second vice president; Chris Martin, treasurer; Chelsea Martz secretary; and Jennifer Sigman Main, reporter. Directors elected to three-year terms on the board include: Sydney Allen, Cris Martin, Laura Salome, Ann Taylor and Nancy Waid. Those members appointed to one-year ex-officio board terms include Sydney Alley, Fred Borer, Adrian Boudinot, Abbie Guinsler, Allie Pitt, Scott Nemeth, Winnie Nemeth and Kara Schockling,

Outgoing OAQHA President Patrick Murty praised the work of the 2013 OAQHA board and noted the number of new directors and new enthusiasm within OAQHA. He recognized director Becca Dingus for her contributions with a president’s award. One of the more memorable parts of the awards banquet was when OAQHA directors presented attendees with chocolate buckeye treats as the group announced plans for the 2013 Buckeye Classic AQHA show circuit. Upcoming meetings for the association will be March 18, April 15 and May 20.


Ohio’s 2013 Buckeye Classic AQHA Circuit to Offer Free Amateur Entries

Everyone loves free. However the 2013

Buckeye Classic AQHA show will take free to a whole other level by offering free amateur, novice amateur and Select amateur entries for six judges during the event July 25-28 at Eden Park Equestrian Center in Sunbury. The 2013 Buckeye

Classic is being co-hosted by the Buckeye Western Horse Association and the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association. The group’s steering committee has raised more than $35,000 in corporate partnerships, which will allow the show to offer the free entries. The show has received special event approval to offer exhibitors six sets of AQHA points for all events except halter, trail, Western riding and reining. Doug Huls, Liz Haynes, Bruce Walquist, Scott Neuman, Karen Graham and Rob Meneely will judge. The Buckeye Classic will offer circuit awards for each class as well as all around and reserve all around awards in each AQHA division. “We are very excited to be working with BWHA on the Buckeye Classic this year,” said Justin Billings, OAQHA first vice president and co-manager of the show. “Ohio used to have several large circuits for AQHA exhibitors that have gone away, and with BWHA’s horse show experience and OAQHA’s

enthusiasm, we’re working to make this show a new premier event in Ohio.” BWHA Member Karol Lee noted that BWHA is also excited about the joint venture. “Our groups have really complemented each other well. We may have had more experience in the show office, but OAQHA members better at promotion and fundraising, which our members traditionally have not done,” she said. “And we’re very excited about the show facility at Eden Park.” The 2013 Buckeye Classic will also feature seven $1000 NSBA classes, include a 2 Year Old Western Pleasure, 3 Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, 3 Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, 3 Year Old Open Western Pleasure, 2 Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle and a 3 Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle. BWHA and OAQHA have each hosted successful AQHA circuits of their own and decided to join forces in 2013. BWHA produced the Flag City USA circuit in Findlay for many years and OAQHA was the first state amateur association in the country to host an AQHA show beginning in 1979. The show is already accepting stall reservations, and will assign stalls based on corporate sponsorship and postmark, Billing said. “We’re trying to be fair and equal with everyone,” he said. Billings noted that the free entry concept would not be possible without the support of the show’s corporate sponsors, which include the Martz family, Olivia Hoecker/Pine Meadow Farm, Rebecca Bailey/One Hot Krymsun, Fritz and Carole Leeman/Leeman Farms, the Equine Chronicle and Rods Western Palace. Amateurs Celebrate Holidays with Volunteer Work

It’s been a tough year for many Americans and we as Ohio Amateurs are so thankful for the opportunity to help the

Marines and be a small part of the Toys for Tots program. Volunteering at the Rickenbacker Airbase each year has actually boosted our own morale as a group and has been a

great team building experience for OAQHA. We were more than happy to work with Gunnery Sergeant Grimes and the Lima Co 3D Battalion, 25th Marines again this year to help with their efforts to serve the community and the nine counties surrounding central Ohio. This is one event that we as Ohio Quarter Horse Association Amateurs look forward to all year. After a full day of sorting thousands of toys at the Marines warehouse and filling countless orders for non-profit organizations throughout Ohio, we kept the camaraderie going by attending our annual Christmas dinner at Cimis Bistro on the Pinnacle Golf Course. It made for a nice ending to a great day and was a way for us to celebrate the Amateurs efforts. This past year we’ve volunteered our time at the Flying Horse Farms for children with serious illnesses and actively supported the New Vocations Horse Rescue and Adoption Program. I am so proud to be part of such a caring group of Amateurs that actively gives back and encourages involvement with the Quarter Horse.

GUIDELINES1. There is no separate entry fee to enter OFBIF classes, however members must submit a nomination form, along with a copy of horses’s registration papers to the OQHA office by August 15 to be eligible for bonus incentive fund monies. Please notethat entries WILL NOT be accepted at any of the regional futurities.2. Participants in the OFBIF must enter the EOQHA, NOQHA, and/or SOQHA open futurity classes to participate. Participants are not required to participate in all three futurities, but can earn bonus money at one, two, or three shows. 3. Registration papers and nomination form are required to be submitted to the OQHA only in the year the horse will be exhibited. Horses must be nominated each and every year they are to be shown. Horses are eligible for OFBIF class with NO restrictions and are not required to be nominated as weanlings and sustained over multiple years.4. A current membership in OQHA is required for both owner and exhibitor prior to the show. 5. All weanlings must be eligible for registration with AQHA. A copy of the AQHA registration application/AQHA Breeders Certificate must be submitted before a horse will be permitted to be exhibited in a class.6. All yearling and older horses must be registered with AQHA. A copy of the AQHA registration papers must be submitted with the entry. and payment must be submitted to each regional association, per their guidelines to be eligible for bonus money. If these are not submitted by the due date, all entries are subject to late fees, per each regional association rules.9. All bonus money will be paid back to the winners of each class for which they have nominated their horses. Nomination deadline is August 15 of the current year.10. All bonus money is in addition to regional association’s purse.11. All classes will be judged by 2 judges. The results from each judge will be tabulated for final placings. One judge will be designated as tie breaker. Judges decision is final.12. It is suggested the foaling date of all weanlings be included on the bottom of back numbers.13. Longe Line classes will be run according to NSBA rules. All other classes will be judged in accordance with AQHA rules.14. All OFBIF classes will be according to NSBA percentages.15. All OFBIF classes will pay back in each class as follows: 6 pay backs if 10 or less show; 8 pay backs if 11 to 20 show; 10 pay backs if 21 to 30 show; 12 pay backs if 31 to 40 show; 14 pay backs if 41 and up show16. Show results must be sent to OQHA within a maximum of 30 days of last day of horse show. After all information is verified, bonus money will be mailed to the winners.17. All bonus money per class will be per OFBIF guidelines. Failure to follow OFBIF guidelines will result in the regional association forfeiting all bonus money for that year.18. Appropriate awards must be given in all classes, minimum of 1st-6th.

OMIQHA held it’s annual awards banquet January 27th at Tiffin University. Awards

were passed out to the high-point winners. Congratulations to all! Special recognition was given to Corky Becker for her many

years of service as OMI’s treasurer. We wish her all the best and will miss her! Our 2013 officers were elected and our Congress queen representative was crowned. The new 2013 officers are: President – Kelly Gibson, Vice-president – Tom Hall, Secretary – Olga Kipp and Treasurer – Deb Novin. Directors terms expiring in 2015 – Lisa Busch, Kevin Earl, Abby Maier, Valerie Heydinger joined directors whose terms expire in 2014 – Allie Walther, Lisa Maag, Chuck Herman and Pat Siefert. Other appointments include: Point Secretary – Lisa Busch, Youth advisors – Jill Earl and Kelsey Gibson and Shannon Novin was crowned the 2013

queen, as well as receiving the 2013 scholarship. We have been going over details of our upcoming show in June. We have the show manager and judges hired. We will have high point awards this year. It was proposed that we approve any, and all, AQHA shows in our region that are held to as point shows towards year-end awards. The only stipulation would be, if a show in Indiana or Michigan is the same weekend as an Ohio show, only the Ohio show would count. After some discussion the motion passed. Our meetings are held the second Monday of every month at the University of Findlay Western Farm at 7:30 p.m. Our youth meets the same day at 6:30 p.m. We welcome new members and look forward to an exciting 2013 show season.

SOQHA has now been in existence for 50 years! To help

us celebrate, the association has launched a redesigned website at www.soqha.com, and a new Facebook page. SOQHA will be

using these two vehicles to communicate news and information with our members and show attendees. We are very excited to be bringing Mark Harrell Horse Shows in to manage our Winter Circuit, March 28-31 and the SOQHYA show two weeks later, April 13-14, both at Roberts Arena in Wilmington. It is the first time Mark Harrell’s group has managed shows in Ohio. Harrell’s touch can already be seen in revised show schedules for both shows. SOQHA’s other shows for the year include the SOQHA Futurity August 17-18 at Roberts Arena in Wilmington, and the Turkey Circuit November 20-December 1 (three judges) in Springfield. The Winter Circuit will feature a three-year-old and older Novice Western pleasure slot class along with eight NSBA classes during the six judge, four-day show. The Winter Circuit will also feature an Easter egg hunt, Easter breakfast and church service. The SOQHYA Youth Show in April will feature a four-judge AQHA show with trail, western riding, horsemanship, western pleasure and reining on Saturday and barrels, pole bending, showmanship, halter as well as hunter under saddle and hunt seat equitation classes on Sunday. The show will also feature a flat rate fee of $275 per horse that includes all AQHA class fees, office charges and one stall for multiple riders and multiple classes (excludes NSBA classes, shavings and warm-ups). The SOQHYA youth recently voted to count the following shows toward NYATT team points, using the 10 best shows of the 27 judges as follows: • March 28-31 SOQHA Winter Circuit Wilmington • April 13-14 SOQHA Youth Show Wilmington • May 11-12 EOQHA Columbus

• May 25-26 NOQHA Findlay • June 29-30 OMIQHA Findlay • July 20-21 OAQHA Sunbury (pending) • July 25-28 Buckeye Classic Sunbury Due to changes in the number of shows held in the SOQHA region in 2013, the youth would have had far fewer shows to collect points toward NYATT team points, so the group voted to add additional shows to the qualifying period. Other rule changes the SOQHA membership approved in 2012 include: • Only shows hosted by SOQHA will be approved for year-end points • Year-end awards will be presented for first through third places for the Open/ Amateur/Amateur Select classes • Year-end awards will be presented for first through six places for the Youth/Novice Youth/Novice Amateur classes • To be eligible for any high point all around awards, a horse must have received a minimum of 10 points in the halter division and a minimum of 10 points in each of at least two classes from the performance division • Futurity rules were updated and the stallion sale/breeders class program was suspended until further notice • The SOQHYA NYATT team members selection process was modified so that a youth may participate in two categories if there are no other members qualified in a particular event. The Ohio State Buckskin Association is gearing up for a great 2013 show

season. Show dates for this year will be June 8-9, June 29-30 and September 7-8. All shows will be held at Circle G Arena in Brookville, Ohio. New for this

year will be the George Anders Memorial Trophy! As many of you may know, George Anders was a long-time OSBA member and exhibitor that we unfortunately lost in late 2012. We are introducing this new award to honor his memory and thank George and his wife, Marilyn, for their many years of service to the club. More details on this will be coming soon! OSBA is again joining forces with the Miami Valley Horse

Show Association, so there are plenty of opportunities for non-IBHA horses to show. This has been a great organization to work with, so we hope to continue to grow together and make new friends! Each show in 2013 will feature at least one fun activity after the show. Last year we had a movie night, Redneck Showmanship and Doggie Trail, as well as some delicious food, so you can look forward to those and more this year. The NOQHA Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet was held on January 26, 2013

at the Akron/Fairlawn Hilton. A great time was had by all, with many new faces at this year’s event. The 2013 officers and directors

were introduced for both NOQHA and NOQHYA. First, we would like to thank Tom Orosz for his leadership the past two years and secondly, welcome our new president, Denise Igoe. We wish you much success in continuing to move the association forward. A reverse raffle was held during the awards presentation, as well as a slide show of candid photos from the 2012 NOQHA shows and the 2013 Stallion Service Auction presentation. NOQHA was honored to have Dr. Scott Myers, OQHA Executive Director, Chris Cecil Darnell, OQHA President and Hank Clason, OQHA Second Vice President, attend the banquet.

A highlight of the evening was the crowning of the 2013 NOQHA Queen, Kelsey Dorka! We extend our utmost congratulations, as she will have an exciting year to look forward to in representing NOQHA and running for 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. Congratulations also are in order to all of our award recipients - we look forward to seeing you at the 2013 NOQHA shows.

The youth association will be holding their annual Trainer Showmanship class at the Summer Six Pack this year, a must see class!

Stallion Service Auction Update The 2013 Stallion Service Auction is well under way with some of the best stallions in the industry available. It is not too late to donate your stallion to this year’s auction! Remember, if a stallion sells in 2013, not only is the 2014 resulting foal eligible for closed futurity classes, but all age-eligible foals from 2013 and older are also eligible for the 2013 closed futurity classes! NOQHA Show Dates The 2013 NOQHA show dates are posted on our website, www.noqha.com and on our Facebook page - make sure to mark your calendars for a great time! The Summer Six Pack was the largest Quarter Horse show in Ohio outside of the Quarter Horse Congress, and we are looking forward to another great year with some exciting events planned. The Novice Extravaganza will be held on Memorial Day at Findlay Western Farm and again this year the Novice All-Around winners for in youth and amateur will receive a work saddle. Tack Swap Regretfully the tack swap scheduled for February 16th, 2013 was cancelled due to a double booking of the facility and the NOQHA contract being cancelled. We will continue with the tack swap for 2014 and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to those planning to attend the event. This is a total increase of 1,526 entries. • There were 245 extra tack stalls purchased at the $375.00 premium. • Bob Geesaman is heading up the set-up crew at the Ohio Expo Center. • The Tri-Chairmen decided to discount the daily passes by 40 percent on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. • In an effort to increase public awareness of the Congress, there will be a horse parade on October 10th at 10:00 a.m. that will begin at the Expo Center and end in front of City Hall. The mayor, several news personalities and Congress officials will

AQHA • Clark Bradley reported that overall show entries are up 12 percent for 2012. • Dan Trein discussed the Ranch Horse Pleasure classes that are becoming very popular nationwide. • Dr. Scott Myers reported that a complete list of AQHA Equipment Rule Changes can be found on their website. Finance Committee • Alan Potts reported that the finance committee is planning on having a budget meeting in December to start planning for the 2013 budget. Executive Committee • Dr. Scott Myers reported that the executive committee is still working on the employee handbook, as well as looking into employee professional development. Dr. Myers also reported that there are repairs that need to be made at the Richwood office, including carpet and a new phone system. These improvements and repairs will be discussed at the budget meeting in December. Don Recchiuti made a motion to accept the executive committee report. Second by Charlie Menker. Motion carried. If a farm name appears as owner, there must be a membership in the name of the farm in order for the horse to receive points. Points are to count from the date on which the owner or owners and rider and/or handler join Ohio Quarter Horse Association by having his, her or its application and fee received at the address of the OQHA Office during regular office hours. Points will start the day the show secretary, at an approved OQHA show, receives the application and fee and so notes on the application the date received. Only members in good standing are eligible for points and awards. The winner of an award must be a member in good standing at the termination of the point year. The point year shall be from the Saturday and Sunday shows only of the Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association approved winter circuit in March through and including the final day of September in each calendar year, Page 11, Article XII Section 3. A judge may officiate at an OQHA show only once in the months of April and period from the Saturday and Sunday shows only of the Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association approved winter circuit in March through May during the competition for state qualifying points to attend the AQHYA World Show, except in an emergency situation when no one else is available. The responsibility for enforcement of this rule rests with the shows’ managements. The show manager contracting with a judge first will have his show approved for Ohio Points per show approval. A judge may judge a class only once during this qualifying period of time. (April - May). Third Reading: Article V Section 12: Any active Director who is absent from at least two regular consecutive meetings or a total of three regular meetings in the calendar year from February through January without permission from the President and/or Executive Vice President may be placed on probation by the affirmative vote of a majority of the Directors voting on said issue of probation. It will be the responsibility of the recording secretary to inform the Directors when such absences have taken place. Failure to do so without a just excuse will demand his immediate replacement by the Board of Director. Elected and appointed board members/officers must attend at least two-thirds of the regular scheduled meetings in a calendar year beginning at the annual meeting. Failure to attend two-thirds of the meetings will require said board member/officer to

NYATT • Don Recchiuti reported that there are 79 NYATT teams this year compared to 77 in 2011. Trail • Dan Trein reported that the Trail patterns are approved and ready to be put online. Amateurs • Patrick Murty reported that the Amateurs are working on several community service projects and getting ready for the Congress pancake breakfast. NOQHA • Chris Darnell reported that the Northern Ohio Futurity will be held 9/21/12- 9/23/12.

EOQHA • Jeff James reported that the last show had over 4,500 entries, which included the Eastern Ohio Futurities. Racing • The lobbyist, Bob Doyle, President Bill Baer and Ben Grandstaff have been working all year with a real estate developer and investors for the development of the tri-state area of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. The development would include motels, malls and a show arena. This would create around 2,000 jobs and pull additional revenue into Ohio from the tri state area. There will be a meeting with the gaming company on Wednesday for the final part of the development. Ben asked for OQHA support, not financially, but a letter of support and the tri chair committee to meet with the lobbyist.Grandstaff answered several questions pertaining to this being a Quarter Horse track only. Ohio State Buckskin Association • Ted Handel reported that 2012 show season is complete. The IBHA is planning on moving the 2013 World Show to Cloverdale Arena. He stated that the computer program and videographer were the biggest challenges this year. Scott reported that overall the schedule worked well, however there may need to be some changes for the future. There has been some discussion about bringing the PBR event back to the Congress next year. • Scott also reported that the Tri-Chair agreed to move forward with merging the Southern Belle with Congress. • Denny Thorsell discussed the concept of a new Halter Futurity Program at the Congress. More details on the program will be discussed in future meetings. • Skip Salome reported on the success of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting on the last day of Congress. OBFIF • Candi Fites reported that there were 135 entries for the futurities with 66 horses nominated. The fund paid just over $29,000 in bonus futurity money. Professional Horsemen • Roger Landis is gathering input for new initiatives in Ohio, like the Test Ride a Reiner program. Ohio Queens • It was reported that there are six contestants for the Queen’s contest. Public Policy • Chris Darnell reported on the public policy initiatives during the Congress. While working with Jon Allison, we were able to invite public officials to tour the Congress. There were more than 30 officials present for the VIP reception. In addition to that, the parade with the mayor was a success and we hope to make that an annual event. The business and property of the organization shall be managed and controlled by officers and directors.

Section 2. Officers: The officers of the Organization shall be the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Reporter who shall be elected annually, at the time of the Annual Meeting of The Ohio Quarter Horse Association. The criteria for being a candidate for an officer must include twelve (12) completed months of service as a Director on the board of the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association and must be at least 14 years old as of the January 1 of the year running for the office of President or Vice President. Such officers shall hold office for a period of one year and until their successors are elected and qualified. Page 18 - ARTICLE III: OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS Section 6. Candidates for national office must declare themselves to the OQHA Youth Advisor by January 25 of the year in which they are interested in running. At the time, the association will designate criteria for the selection of the candidate(s) who will receive the financial support and the approval of the OQHA. All Around Awards - A year end all around award will be given to the youth member residing in Ohio who earns the most points with one horse in Youth Activity halter and performance classes. A contestant may exhibit more than one horse; however, the points earned by the youth with each horse will be compiled separately. There will be all around and reserve awards for age groups - 13 & under and 14 - 18 years and younger and 14 years and older. In addition there will be an out of state all around and reserve awarded annually to non-resident members of OQHYA. Page 19 - ARTICLE V: SELECTION OF TEAMS REPRESENTING OHIO QUARTER HORSE YOUTH ASSOCIATION Section 1. The point system for selection of teams will be as follows: There will be (30) points maximum awarded for each class. Points will be awarded on the basis of (1) point for each horse the exhibitor defeats plus one point for the exhibitor up to 9 places. The person’s best 10 shows in the qualifying period will count, subject to the requirements of placing in a minimum of three shows and accumulating at least 10 points in the qualifying period for the AQHYA National Finals. Membership on AQHYA National Finals team and All-American Quarter Horse Congress Team shall be exclusive to OQHYA youth members residing in Ohio. It is also required for youth to attend at least two (2) OQHYA board meetings between January 1 and July 1 of the current year in order to participate on the AQHYA National Finals team and/or the Congress team. AQHYA National Finals team members attending the two (2) required meetings will receive the funds per exhibitor cash disbursement. Those qualifying nationally and current members of OQHYA

OQHA will NOT pay for the fees if more than one horse is qualified and entered in the same class, unless that specific class allows for exhibitor to show more than one horse. Those qualifying nationally and current members of OQHYA may participate on the team, but would not receive the funds from the Association without meeting the required current year fundraiser and attending the two (2) required meetings. For the AQHYA National finals team, points will be counted from the Saturday & Sunday shows only of the SOQHA-sponsored Winter Circuit in March through May 31 inclusive. Any youth going to the AQHYA finals must have written approval from parent or guardian who will be responsible for the conduct of the youth. Current youth members interested in qualifying for a cattle event, working hunter, jumping, equitation over fences, and other classes not usually offered at regular shows or cannot meet the point requirement must declare their interest in competing at the AQHYA World Championship show on or before the date of March 1st, however, if such class(es) is/are offered six (6) or more times, participation in these classes will take precedence over the letter of declaration in determining who will be state representatives at the AQHYA World Championship show. This letter of declaration should be sent to OQHA by way of certified mail with return receipt. OQHA will designate requirements to qualify for the above listed events. Congress Programs • Candi Fites reported that there were 2,509 Congress Programs sold along with 665 given away for a total of 3,174 Programs. Trail • All entries were up in the Trail classes. Hall of Fame • Jess Cecil was inducted into the Congress Hall of Fame this year. Puppy Alley • Dr. Scott Myers reported that the net profit for Puppy Alley was $2,045.00. • Alan Potts made a motion to donate all proceeds to the Justin Bisel family. Second by Brent Maxwell. Motion carried. Vet Animal Protection • Dr. Scott Myers reported that there were no positive drug tests this year at Congress. VIP/Awards Ceremony • Lisa Alley reported that the commercial exhibitor party was a big success with a cost of $1,377.00. Speed & Contesting • Kristine Nagy reported that the contesters were very pleased with the footing this year. NOQHA • Chris Cecil Darnell reported that NOQHA Banquet will be January 26, 2013. The ballot is as follows: Denise Igoe – President, Candi Fites – 1st Vice President, Billy Kelly – 2nd Vice President. EOQHA • Jeff James reported that the EOQHA Banquet will be held January 12, 2013 at the Longenberger Club House. Cutting • Chuck Smith reported that the last Cutting event had over 90 entries. New Business • Dr. Scott Myers made the recommendation that committees begin submitting their annual budgets. With long-term savings being the major objective, he asked that every committee make an effort to trim 25 percent from their budget. • He also recommended that OQHA begin annual contributions to savings and long-term capital improvement funds. • Scott also recommended that we investigate setting up a crisis fund, a long-range planning committee and a foundation.


Minutes• Jeff James discussed the need for new mesh curtains in the Celeste warm-up arena. Jeff gave prices from two different vendors. He also stated that there is a possibility that the Ohio Expo Center may share in some of the cost. This item was tabled for future board discussion.

Excused were Ed Dingledine, Fritz Leeman, Steve Marko, Don Recchiuti and Brent Tincher. President Skip Salome called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. Introduction of Guests Rod Atherton, Mike Vargo, Bill Wright, Chad Piper, Matt Claypool, Pete Heins, Mark Watkins, Jeff James and Lee Smith. Minutes • Brent Maxwell made a motion to approve the Minutes of the 2011 Annual meeting. Second by Dave McDonald. Motion carried. Tri-Chairmen Report • Skip Salome reported that the 2011 Congress was a success. • Dr. Scott Myers reported that the Tri-Chair are working on the 2012 schedule. Rules Committee • Binnie Ann Masters recommended that the position of Director, created by Hank Clason being voted as Second Vice President, be filled, and then the position on the executive committee that was created by Chris Darnell being voted as First Vice President. • Lisa Alley made a motion to accept the rules committee’s recommendation. Second by Brent Maxwell. Motion passed. President’s Report • President Charlie Menker thanked the Tri-Chair, office staff, board members and Cam Foreman for all of their hard work over the last year. Charlie also wished the 2012 Board of

Directors best of luck in the upcoming year. Executive Vice President’s Report • Cam Foreman reported that the last three years have mostly been about change. Cam listed the accomplishments he has been part of over the last year: • Redesign website • Redesign OQHA weekend horse show program • Online entry system • Refined and enhanced financial statements • Working on a total rewrite of the Congress system • Largest Congress in terms of entries • Redesign of commercial exhibitors in Congress Hall • Kiser Arena Specialists are now maintaining the footing in the arenas • Cam went on to thank the staff and board of directors for their continued hard work. At this time, Cam Foreman resigned his position as Executive Vice President, giving a 90 day notice effective today. Disclosure Statements • President Charlie Menker asked if any director serving on the Board of Directors for OQHA or staff members needed to make a full disclosure of business dealings with this association. • Denny Thorsell stated that he is the broker for OQHA health insurance. • Chuck Smith disclosed that he has the contract for supplying the cattle and equipment for the Cutting events at the Congress. • Vic Clark stated that his accounting firm prepares our taxes. He also stated that he does work with Professional Auction Services. • Chris Darnell reported that she works with numerous sponsors and other horse shows. • Skip Salome reported that he helps with Heritage Catering, but he does not own the company. • Todd Salome reported that he works on the door decal program and obtains prices for the printing. • Elizabeth Gorski made a motion to approve all 2011 actions of the Board of Directors. Second by Dave McDonald. Motion approved.

Executive Committee • Denny Thorsell nominated Dave McDonald for a three-year term on the executive committee. Second by Bob Hexter.
