BREAD AND WINE

The Bread for this week’s Masses has been donated in loving memory of SOPHIE TOGHER donated and requested by TERRY MCCABE.

The Wine for this week’s Masses has been requested and donated for the SPECIAL INTENTIONS of the WACKER FAMILY.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given to him.” Sirach 15:17

It seems that in this life we have an endless array of difficult choices always conflicting for our time and attention. But in the end it is all very simple. Do we choose to give or do we choose to have? Do we choose to participate or do we choose to go our own way? Basically, do we choose God’s love or do we choose the worldly possessions?

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is a concrete way to chose to give of our blessings and participate in God’s love. The funds raised through the Appeal support programs that feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. Please consider making a gift. Thank you.

Liturgical Ministry

GOOD TO KNOW

The Celebrants of the Liturgy

Sometimes we think of the priest as the celebrant of the liturgy and those in pew as an "audience" that attentively watches the sacred action at the altar. Yet that is not the case. It is the whole community gathered before the altar, the entire Body of Christ, that celebrates the Mass and the other liturgies of the Church.

Liturgical services are not private functions but are always celebrations of the Church, God's holy people united and organized under the authority of the bishops. Therefore, liturgical services pertain to the whole body of the Church. They make it present and have effect it. They touch individual members of the Church in different ways, depending on their role in the services. Liturgical services have no audience; they only have celebrants giving praise and worship of God.

JUNIOR AND ADULT ALTAR SERVERS The Altar Server Ministry is one of the most rewarding opportunities for youth and adults to

be of service to our parish. God calls us to serve, and altar servers respond to that call from the Lord. Serving at the altar is a wonderful opportunity for young people and adults to be involved with the parish, to learn more about the liturgy, and also to make some new friends

Junior Servers: Boys or girls from the grades 5 through 8, who have received the sacraments of Baptism, and Eucharist . Training sessions are required.

Adult Servers: Adult Servers should be registered parishioners and part of our Sunday congregation. Training sessions are provided.

If you would like more information or would like to volunteer,

please speak to Father Tom or Father Raúl or contact them at

[email protected] [email protected]

Precious Feet

Newsletter of Respect Life Committee of St. Joseph Church, Oradell/ New Milford, NJ Melinda Rabbia ([email protected]) & Hank Keough, Editors Issue #73, Jan.-Feb. 2011

MARCH FOR LIFE Bundled up against the cold, with the temperature hovering in the mid-20s, an estimated 300,000

Americans of all ages flooded the nation's capital on January 24 for the annual March for Life. Pro-lifers marked the 38th Anniversary of the landmark Supreme

Court decision which legalized abortion (Roe v. Wade, 1/22/73). Since that date, 53 million unborn human lives have been lost to abortion in America. According to Church teaching, human life must be respected and protected from the moment of conception (Catechism # 2270).

As in previous years, the march seemed dominated by Catholic participants. Catholic high schools, youth groups and colleges were out in force. Numerous religious sisters and priests could be seen along the route – along with people praying the rosary, holding crucifixes and carrying signs donated by the Knights of Columbus.

In his homily at a Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, Bishop Lori of Connecticut likened people coming to Washington to take part in the annual March for Life to pilgrims. He noted that Mary's pilgrimage to see her cousin Elizabeth “was not easy”. "She didn't have buses or roads or fast-food franchises. She made her way along narrow paths or mountain roads upon which she walked."

Now, Bishop Lori said, "Mary joins us in this pilgrimage dedicated to the cause of life ... from the moment of conception until natural death." While some New Jersey pro-lifers ventured to Washington D.C., others made a shorter trip to the Trenton statehouse for a pro-life rally on the same date. Governor Chris Christie made brief remarks

before hundreds, stating that "every life is precious and a gift from God."

Pro-lifers continue to pray that the eyes of the president and legislators will be opened to the very real humanity of the unborn. Please join us!

PRAYER TO END ABORTION

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.

I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death

by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.

Today I commit myself Never to be silent,

Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn.

I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, And never to stop defending life

Until all my brothers and sisters are protected, And our nation once again becomes

A nation with liberty and justice Not just for some, but for all,

Through Christ our Lord. Amen!
