The Division is focused on the comprehensive rehabilitation of the facial trauma patient and the dentally compromised patient. Emphasis this past year has been on restoring the edentulous and partially edentulous patient with dental implants following reconstructive and orthognathic surgery. The Division has completed an exten- sive study of obesity and its relationship to anesthesia and the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Investigations in the Division are proceeding to further develop outcomes assessments and establish the unique needs of the patient population suffering from excessive weight. Patient Care The Holmes Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Ambulatory Care Center is primarily devoted to resident outpatient clinical education. At the Center approximately 9,000 patient visits and 1,500 deep sedation surgeries were recorded during the past academic year. Reductions in State and Federal government support of indigent care patients created additional demands for the resources and services supplied by the Holmes Hospital Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center. The Center provides a substantial health service to the Greater Cincinnati area and continues to be a valuable resource for both the community and health care providers in the tri-state area. The Division’s practice at the Medical Arts Building improved its ability to handle the increased demands of patients with dental facial deformities, dental implant needs, reconstructive jaw surgery, impacted teeth and head and neck tumors by undergoing a major facility renovation and expan- sion. A new surgical suite equipped for reconstructive oral and maxillofacial surgery, new digital imaging capabilities and additional examining rooms are now operational. Dr. Reddy is an active member of the CraniofacialTeam at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and providesboth primary and tertiary care for hundreds of pediatricpatients with oral health and craniofacial needs. The mili-tary veteran population of the tri-state area has benefitedtremendously from the skills of UC oral and maxillofacialsurgeons in oral health rehabilitation with dental implants.Veterans now have available state-of-the art oral healthreconstruction as a result of the efforts of the Division ofOral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Dental Service at theVeterans Affairs Medical Center.

which received full accreditation in January 2006, offersdiversified training for treatment of facial trauma, surgicalreconstruction of skeletal deformities, facial cosmeticsurgery, trauma surgery, and dental implants. The Divisionoffers a four-year program whose principal goal is the training of oral and maxillofacial surgeons to practice abroad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and tobecome qualified and prepared to take the Board examina-tion. An optional degree track is available for the M.D.degree. To qualify, the candidate must pass Part I of theNational Medical Exam to enter the third year of medicalschool after first completing the four-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program.

The first year of the residency is intended to providethe resident with a comprehensive working knowledge oforal and maxillofacial surgery, methods of diagnosis, patient management, ambulatory sedation and anesthesiaprinciples, and basic operative techniques. In the secondyear, residents spend nine months on off-service rotationsand three months on the Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryService. Chief res-idents are responsible for the pre- and postoperative careof all oral surgery patients and perform a majority of theoral surgery at The University Hospital, as well as performcases at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and VeteransAffairs Medical Center.

ResearchClinical research recently enjoyed success at the

national level with the results of an outpatient ambulatoryanesthesia in the obese patient study paper accepted forthe AAOMS annual meeting and selected as one of the 15%of papers to compete for the outstanding scientific paperin several categories. Additional studies are ongoing relat-ed to obesity and surgical outcomes as well as long-termstudies in neurosurgical patients via mid-face osteotomiesin conjunction with neurosurgery.

Other ongoing oral and maxillofacial surgery researchincludes

1. Transorbital minimally invasive surgical approa-ches to anterior circulatory aneurysms

2. Outcomes assessment of orthognathic surgery patients
