Squatters to move out by Aug 3TheStar

EIGHT squatter families at Kampung Pisang, Chemor, near Ipoh, have been given until the end of the

month to vacate their homes to make way forRM12.4bil electrified double tracking railway project

    from Ipoh to Padang Besar.

The decision was reached following a dialogue between the families and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad

(KTMB).The dialogue, arranged by Tambun MP Datuk Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, was held at SK Haji

    Mahmud in Chemor recently.

KTMB project management spokesman Zan Zulkifli said work on the land occupied by the families was

supposed to have started in June.

But because of the new deadline, work on the project for the ChemorKhantan stretch will be delayed by

    two months, he said.

Earlier, Zan informed the families that they would be paid RM1,000 in ex-gratia as moving fee and RM300

in rental aid for two years.

The state will find alternative housing for you all during the two years, he told them.

When replying to queries from residents, Zan said the ex-gratia payment would not be increased.

This is the amount that will be paid to all squatters affected by the double tracking project, he added.

Husni, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, said he was approached by the squatters to have the

dialogue as they were frightened by eviction notices they had received. They also wanted more time to

look for alternative housing, he added.
