First of all guys..like always the question where easy n a bit tricky ..but then.. life is based on one's luck n it did shower

upon me today n i have cleared class 4....this surveyor was asking the question frm where i had left the answer

Safety 

1.INTRODUCE U R SELF .....i was sitting blank ..then he told me to tell my name n WHAT TYPE OF SHIP U HAVE SAILED

ONn for how long - i said type 3 handy max product tanker n sailed for 8 mnths 

SO HE ASKED R THERE OTHER TYPES ONLY OR WHAT n i said there r based on the type of cargo based on category x n

TELL ME ABT PUMP ROOM SAFETIES - i said i didn't have a pump room i had FRAMO system - TO THIS INTERNAL GOT IN

N ASKED SO CAN U TELL ME WHAT IS COFFERDAM VENTING ...i had no clue abt it n i asked him back is it abt tank

venting he said no .....n sorry sir i said i dont know .....HE SEEMED TO BE ANGRY N SAID WHAT DID U DO ON SHIP ITS IS 3

MONTHLY CHECKUP 

INTERNAL ; U HAVE MEP TOO RIGHT ....(me ....yes sir ) FIRST EXPLAIN ME THE FRAMO SYSTEM..i explained it to him

regarding the supply frm the hyld.oil tanks to the powerpack driven hyld.pump frm there the required pressure is raised

for the system ..frm there it goes to the distributor block where in accordance to the service condtion the pressure is

altered for the framo pump n the hyld oil which is driving the pump is led n it runs in the desired discharge rate ...he

seemed to be satisfied with it 

NOW TELL ME WHERE DO U FIND WEAR ALLOWANCE FOR THE FRAMO SYSTEM - i had no clue abt it n just said is it

around the pump ....n after this he just went out for a while 

NOW THE EXTERNAL ASKED TELL ME WHAT DO U KNOW ABT BDN - i forgot the full form but i did not tell him abt it ---- i

just mentioned it out its a copy given to us frm the supplier regarding the cargo or the fuel ....we get to understand

many details regarding frm it like wise how to handle n i said many more but then he asked TELL ME WHAT WILL U LOOK

FOR IT IN ACCORDANCE TO MARPOL - i thought a bit n said sulphur content....n he seemed to be satisfied n asked do u

chk anything else - i said i dont knw 

SULPHUR'S WHAT IS THE CURRENT CRITERIA OF THE F.O TO HAVE IT ..n explained to him abt both the SECA and outside

SECA ...n he was satisfied 

U HAD IG PLANT OR GENERATOR - generator ..SO TELL ME WHY IG IS PROVIDED 

first reason i told him was the main thing abt inerting the tanks n reducing the o2 in the tanks after that it is also used to

act as head on the cargo n helps in discharge n evenly is non reactive or non corrosive unlike co2 - was satisfied with

itself 

after that he asked me abt the FLAMMABILITY CURVE OF THE HYDROCARBON n draw it -----I just had ruff idea abt it n coz

of was a bit stammering in this .i drew a bit n said i don't know much abt it sir but it expalins the higher n lower limit of

the of explosion asked me abtthe the limit valve ..i had no clue regarding this n just said the if hydrocarbon is above

92percent or below 10percent - i dont knw what he said after that...i think he spoke to himself he helped me for smtime

during this answer n was try to get the answer frm me 

WHY SELF CLOSING SOUNDING PIPE R PROVIDED FOR DB TANKS - db tanks sir we didn't have db tanks ...then i

remembered all the bottom platform tanks in engine room r db tanks ..he was like what ..then i corrected it n said the

answer to prevent any fire hazard ..he asked is that it is only for that ....i said it also reduces the possibility of fumes

coming out ..he asked again fumes how do fumes come out of tanks i said if any heating arrangement might be there

becoz of that anything else i had no other clue n in the morning one guy told me one point n i said it to regarding to

prevent any overflow ..n he got shocked WHAT HOW IT WILL PREVENT OVER FLOW DO SEE ANY OTHER TANKS ON other

DECK having this arrangement or what i said no then he asked me then what is the arrangement over there n i said abt

the overflow line to the overflow tank n and provision of the vent...

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A VENT OF THE BUNKER TANK N THAT OF THE BALLAST TANK - i drew it a bit n

explained it out to him but was not sure abt it ..then said abt the flame trap n he seems to happy abt it 

WHAT IS SHEER STRAKE, STICKER PLATE , N BITTER END - strake conncted to the weather deck frm the shp side its

named as such coz its subjected to sheer force ; sticker plate its provided below the sounding pipe to prevent the bob

damaging the tank bottom platting ;bitter end its an emergency method for losing an anchor n explained him abt the

connection how it is he said to draw it n i did n he was satisfied

WHAT IS DECK SEAL - its like a non return v/v wanted me to draw it n i drew it ...after that i explained it that if any back

pressure is there then the water will go in to side n prevent the flow of the gases back to the engineroom ...then heasked

will the water flow back to the engine room i said no as there r n/r vv before the decksealthat will prevent it frm flowing

back wards he asked again if that nr vv is not there then will it flow i said no as the head would be less 

WHAT IS A CLASS BULK HEAD - i said its a fire class bulkhead with the maximum protection which sustains the maximum

amt of heat for the standard test of 925'c for one hr n at no point shall the bulkhead rise above the temp of 180'c ....he

asked is it 180 or smthing else i just said it i am bit confused with that too my self whether it would 140 or 180 and

which would be on which side for which also i did not knew 

WHAT DOES A-60 TELL U N WHERE R THESE 

i said it refers to the time limit to which it shld withstand the temperature and its location shld be for safegaurding the

person's life so it shld be located at places where there r A-60 doors so thats mostly the ecr and the steering entrance -

and he seemed to be satisfied with it 

WHAT IS FREE BOARD N WHAT IS FREE SURFACE EFFECT N HOW WILL U REDUCE IT.. I SAID FEW STUFF HE GOT

SATISFIED WITH IT 

he asked few more .....if i remember them i will post them ...

MEP -.i was the second last person so they seemed to be in a hurry and did not ask much in mep 

TAPPET CLEARANCE WHY IS THERE N HOW WILL U TAKE IT -i exlained it to him regarding the positive opning n stuff

along with the cam roller n cam stuff he was notgetting pleased so i just went to the procedure of measuring the

value ....i said we measure it when its hot ...n the stuff he got satisfied 

WHAT ALL OVERHAULS U DID ..i said main engine fuel v/v , and centrifugal pump 

ook CENTRIFUGAL PUMP OVERHAULING PROCEDURE i explained to him frm the perspective of safty and explained every

single point regarding the overhaul ..he was not satisfied at all he said u can not over haul the cf pump like that ..i said i

did .....n i drew the pump ruffly then he said this is a different design 

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP PRINCIPAL ---I explained it frm the base regarding the suction frm the impeller n the imparting of

the k.e to the fluid by this time the internal came n n said sir time hoogya ...jane dooo isko n the internal saw the paper

he has answered mostly ..n asked what do u say man shld we give u both the papers or what ....i was shocked n did not

move for a while the external....said what u r passed now now goo out before we fail u .....i said thank U .......

i am very much thankful and in a debt to many of the ppl who had posted q's over here n helped others ,,,,hats of to

3. how many float in tank??( i told 2 , one for low level and another pump change over, im not sure with this, but he dint

say anything) 

4. how rudder movement is prevented in extreme!!??( ans.by limit switch)

5. what will the limit switch do??( ans.stop the pump)

6. why we are not increasing the rudder angle more than 35*??( turning circle of ship will increase and if further moved,

mechanical damage may happen)

7. explain with diagram how turning circle will increase when rudder angle will go after 35*??( i dont knw)

8. what was ur engine's scavenging type?( uniflow) asked the arrangement and port profile and how swirl is achieved.

9. how the exhaust valve opened??( by hydraulic actuator and hydraulic piston on top,)

10. where the oil leaves, how valve closes??( a bleed line with orifice, regulate the closing n give smooth closing and a

drain line)

11. is exh v.v rotated (yes)and how?? ,( a diagonal notch is cut in the hydraulic piston, which assist opening when whn

valve opening)

10. how its closed??( by spring air pressure and spring air piston)

11. what is tht spring air, is spring and air is there inside??( no sir, there is no spring, the air is compressed and the

pressure transmit a spring back action)

12. so if spring is compressing wont it escape thru the inlet pipe( no sir, there is a N.R valve assembly to prevent it)

2. Plz Tell me what questions where asked in FN 3 & FN 4b

3. So have you prepared for the last time questions?? and asked 

2 or 3 questions from that??? for which he didn`t react for any answers.

4. What will you observe in battery... i answered i will check for corrosion in terminals, he asked y it happens, how it

happens and so on.

Then i said about density check, he asked me how , plz explain how its done..

5. Then he went on asking how do you start Emergency generator. Whatever you say, he wouldn`t be accepting he will

ask how?? and why??

6. How is paralleling of generator done???

7. how Phase, voltage frequency are bought equal, how and why it is done.. u will never be able to ans this question if u

aren`t sound on ur basics.

8. How will you start an air compressor? and cross questions what if it doesn`t start, what you will check he will ask

when you say something he will immediately ask y do u check that for what reason, if dnt give a reason he might insult

you too saying even oilers can do following checks and so on.
