Bear on the HomefrontStephanie Innes and Harry Endrulat

Illustrated by Brian Deines

The true wartime story of a tiny teddy who always comes home.

During World War II, ten thousand children from British cities were sent to live with host families away from the war zone. Bear on the Homefront retells the true story of two “guest children,”

Grace and William Chambers, who cross the ocean and meet Aileen Rogers, a nurse serving on the homefront. With her is Teddy, the stuffed bear whose trip to the front lines of World War I is chron-icled in A Bear in War. Using archival images and Aileen Rogers’ wartime diary, Stephanie Innes and Harry Endrulat recreate William and Grace’s journey by train to their host family’s prairie farm. Aileen, seeing William’s anxiety, lets her stuffed friend stay with the little boy throughout the train ride and ultimately throughout the war. Brian Deines’s soulful oil paintings capture the spirit of the war years, communicating both the loneliness of children separated from their families and the joyful conclusion when Grace, William and Teddy all return to their homes again.

The great-niece of Aileen Rogers, Stephanie Innes co-wrote A Bear in War and Bear on the Homefront. Stephanie lives in Tucson, Arizona.

Writer and editor Harry Endrulat has also written numerous books for the Max and Ruby series and The Adventures of Franklin and Friends collection.

Brian Deines is the illustrator of over twenty children’s books, including Caribou Song and Dragonfly Kites, which were shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for illustration.

When Emily Carr Met WooMonica Kulling

Illustrated by Dean Griffiths

An eccentric painter. A rambunctious monkey. A true story of friendship and mischief.

In 2013 a painting by Emily Carr sold for $3.39 million. But in the 1920s, Emily Carr was consid-ered a strange bird who made paintings nobody wanted, kept a houseful of pets and often disap-

peared into the woods in a tiny house on wheels. But even those familiar with Emily’s eccentricities were surprised when she adopted a small, lonely monkey. When Emily Carr Met Woo is the story of Woo the monkey’s joyful and chaotic introduction to Emily Carr’s household. She snatches at the parrot’s feathers, chases the cats and dogs—and wins Emily’s big heart. But when Woo’s mischief turns dangerous, Emily fears she may lose her little friend.

Dean Griffiths’s watercolors capture the mood and architecture of the 1920s. Monica Kulling, using prose as simple and expressive as Emily’s own brush strokes, retells the true story of one of the era’s greatest artists—and of the monkey who loved her. The book includes photos, reproduc-tions of Emily Carr’s paintings, and a biography of the artist.

Monica Kulling’s many acclaimed titles include In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps it Up, All Aboard! Elijah McCoy’s Steam Engine and Lumpito and the Painter from Spain.

Dean Griffiths lives in the very region of British Columbia that Emily Carr loved. He has illustrated critically acclaimed titles like Maggie Can’t Wait, Perfect Man and Lumpito and the Painter from Spain.

Peach GirlRaymond Nakamura

Illustrated by Rebecca Bender

Momoko is here to make the world a better place. One ogre at a time.

When the farmer and her husband find a giant peach at their door, they can’t imagine how it got there. But they are even more surprised when the skin bursts open and out leaps…a girl.

Momoko is here to make the world a better place, and what better way to start than by inves-tigating the rumors about a fearsome local ogre? Everyone says the ogre has teeth like knives, shoots flames from his eyes and eats small children. The villagers won’t go near him. But Momoko wants to find out for herself, and her new friends Monkey, Dog and Pheasant just might be able to help her—as long as she’s willing to share those tasty peach dumplings.

Inspired by Japan’s Peach Boy story, Raymond Nakamura's quirky adventure reminds readers that rumor is no substitute for seeing with your own eyes.

Award-winning illustrator Rebecca Bender’s spirited acrylics bring to life a spunky heroine, a trio of expressive animals and a vivid Japanese landscape.

Raymond Nakamura is an educational consultant and avid science blogger who has also taught English while exploring his cultural heritage in Japan. Raymond’s own spunky daughter inspired the character of Momoko in Peach Girl, his first book.

Included is eleven-year-old Andrew Adansi-Bonnah from Ghana, who raised thousands of dollars for refugee children in Somalia after seeing their desperate situation covered in the news. Another child profiled is twelve-year-old Mimi Ausland from the United States, nicknamed “Dr. Doolittle” by her family. The Magician of AuschwitzKathy Kacer

Illustrated by Gillian Newland

A young boy’s life is changed thanks to the Magician of Auschwitz.

Once there was a renowned magician called Nivelli, who performed before packed audiences in the grandest theaters of Berlin. Night after night, his fans applauded and called out for more

astonishing feats of magic. “Bravo!” they would shout, as Nivelli bowed low with a great flourish. But that was in a different, happier time, before the Jews of Europe were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. This is the true story of a young boy on the inside of Auschwitz, whose life is changed by the actions of a prisoner who performs magic for the guards and who the boy later learns was the famous Nivelli.

Sleeping Dragons All AroundSheree Fitch

Illustrated by Michele Nidenoff

A hilarious rhyming poem on how to befriend cranky dragons.

In Sleeping Dragons All Around, a girl wakes up in the middle of the night and wants some cake. But to reach the refrigerator, she has to tiptoe past a host of sleeping dragons, like Priscilla in

her pink pantaloons, the punk-rock dragon Fagan with his spiky green hair, and Beelzebub (who sleeps in the tub).

When she stubs her toe, the dragons wake up, and she has to think fast to befriend them. Fitch’s celebrated lipslippery poetry and Michele Nidenoff’s colorful illustrations combine to make this one of the most delightful children’s books ever published in Canada.

This is Michele Nidenoff’s first Sheree Fitch book, and she thoroughly enjoyed bringing the silly, imaginative poems to life.

Soapstone SignsJeff Pinkney

Illustrated by Darlene Gait

Only the carver knows the soapstone’s true shape.

One spring, a nine-year-old Cree boy is visited by a master soapstone carver named Linny, who gives him four pieces of soapstone. The primary secret to carving, the boy learns, is recog-

nizing that each piece of soapstone already holds its true form inside. Linny teaches the boy to listen to the soapstone and look to the world around him for signs as to what to carve. As the seasons change, the young boy’s experiences lend him opportunities to develop his carving skills and become attuned to the signs around him. He eagerly awaits the following spring, which will bring Linny’s return and a chance to show off his carvings.

Jeff Pinkney holds an English degree from Trent University, is a former newspaper columnist, and currently works as a business advisor. Soapstone Signs, his first work of fiction, draws on Jeff ’s experiences while traveling as a development consultant in Canada’s James Bay Frontier, where he acquired a deep appreciation for the people and the landscape. Jeff is an emerging poet, writer and an amateur stone carver. He and his wife Leslie share a brood of three story-loving daughters. They are surrounded by soapstone carvings in their Peterborough, Ontario home.

Sigmund BrouwerIllustrated by Dave Whamond

The Queen of Mean has no time for green.

Justine McKeen is back, and she’s on a deadline. With only days left before Earth Day, Justine enlists the help of her classmates to count flower buds, frogs, spiders and ants in their natural

habitat as part of an environmental science project. But there’s a species right in her own class-room that she’ll have to tackle first—a class bully. Savannah Blue, aka the Queen of Mean, criti-cizes Justine’s secondhand clothes and calls being green a waste of time. Their teacher, Mrs. Howie, gives the girls a new assignment for Earth Day—they must present together to the class on why it’s important to care for the environment. Skye AboveEric Walters

Illustrated by David Parkins

Can Skye fly? She’s about to find out.

N ine-year-old Skye has always had a fascination with flying. She’d love to be a pilot someday, like both of her parents, but deep down she really wishes she could be a bird. When Skye’s

parents take her to Costa Rica, she is thrilled about all of the beautiful exotic birds she’ll get to see. What she doesn’t realize is that her parents have three big surprises planned, and each will offer her a different opportunity to feel what it’s like to fly. From snorkeling with baby sea turtles to parasailing out on the open ocean to zip-lining through the Costa Rican jungle, Skye will have more than one chance to fly like a bird before this trip of a lifetime is through.

Eric Walters began writing in 1993 as a way to entice his grade-five students into becoming more interested in reading and writing. At the end of the year, one student suggested that he try to have his story published. Since that first creation, Eric has published more than eighty novels. Take ShelterAt Home Around the World

Nikki Tate and Dani Tate-Stratton

A roof, a door, some windows, a floor. All houses have them, but not all houses are alike. Some have wings (airplane homes), some have wheels (Romany vardoes), some float; some are made

of straw, some of snow and ice. Some are enormous, some are tiny; some are permanent and some are temporary. But all are home. Take Shelter explores the way people live all over the world and beyond—from the Arctic to the Antarctic, from an underground house in Las Vegas to the International Space Station. Everywhere people live, they adapt to their surroundings and create unique environments, using innovative techniques to provide that most basic of needs: shelter.

Nikki Tate is the author of many books for children and teens, including Down to Earth in the Orca Footprints series. When she isn’t writing, she can be found caring for the many animals on her small farm, tending her garden or snuggling between her two dogs, reading. For more information, visit www.nikkitate.com.

Dani Tate-Stratton lives with her husband, mom and grandfather on a small urban farm near Victoria, British Columbia, where she is a graphic designer, writer, compulsive crafter and reluctant farmer. Take Shelter is her first book. For more information, visit www.danitatestratton.com.

Annaleise CarrHow I Conquered Lake Ontario to

Help Kids Battling CancerAnnaleise Carr and Deborah Ellis

Over eight months of planning, hundreds of hours of hard physical training, amassing a team of dedicated crewmates, approaching sponsors and collecting donations—and, finally, swimming

for twenty-seven hours across the cold, rough waters of Lake Ontario. Why would a fourteen-year-old girl take on such a challenge?

For Annaleise Carr, the motivation did not come from a desire for glory. Her ultimate goal was to raise money for her new friends at Camp Trillium, a charity that provides a camping experience for kids with cancer. What kept her going through the cold water, the exhaustion and the terrifying night swim was the thought of those kids and their families that she was helping. In August 2012, she became the youngest person to cross Lake Ontario.

Readers will meet an extraordinary fourteen-year-old girl in this book. As she tells her story, it becomes clear how idealism and an intense desire to help others can lead a young teen to almost unimaginable achievements.

Annaleise Carr became the youngest marathon swimmer to cross Lake Ontario in August of 2012. She is the recipient of many citizenship and philanthropic awards.

Deborah Ellis is the award-winning author of several books for kids and teens. She is best known for her novel The Breadwinner, which she wrote following her work at refugee camps in Afghanistan.

SkydiverSaving the Fastest Bird in the World

Celia Godkin

The inspiring true story of how the peregrine falcon was saved from the brink of disaster.

H igh in the sky, a peregrine falcon joins her mate for some swooping and diving before returning to her nest to guard her eggs. The couple doesn’t know it yet, but they will lose most of these

eggs—the first clutch to a volunteer scaling the cliff, and the next to the harmful effects of DDT. Told against the backdrop of scientists’ efforts to understand the raptors’ decline in the wild, this illustrated nonfiction book tells the story of several generations of falcons as they are taken to a sanctuary, reintegrated into the wild and ultimately relocated to the ledge of a city skyscraper.

With dynamic oil illustrations, author and wildlife artist Celia Godkin effortlessly captures the detail of the falcons and brings to life the different landscapes they inhabit. Skydiver will delight and inform readers with a passion for species preservation, as it documents the struggles and the even-tual success of the efforts to save the fastest bird in the world.

Celia Godkin’s many picturebooks with environmental themes are informed by her studies in zoology and her career in scientific illustration. Among other honors, Fire! was shortlisted for the Norma Fleck Award and Wolf Island won the Children’s Literature Roundtables of Canada Award.

Because I Am a GirlRosemary McCarney with Jen Albaugh and Plan International

When a girl is given her basic human rights, she can lift herself—and everyone around her—out of poverty.

From the author of Every Day is Malala Day. Because I am a Girl is a global initiative from Plan International to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of

poverty. Plan helped the UN declare October 11th the "International Day of the Girl" to recognize and advocate for girls’ rights globally. This book illustrates the Because I am Girl call to change by telling stories of girls around the world. They begin by telling us “Because I am a girl, I eat if there is food left over when everyone is done” and “I am the Poorest of the Poor.” But it ends with the inspiring section “Because I am a Girl, I can change the world.” Each part begins with one real girl’s story, illustrated with Plan’s amazing photographs.

Rosemary McCarney leads the Plan International Canada team, where she helped create the Because I am a Girl campaign and worked to have an International Day of the Girl declared by the United Nations to celebrate the lives of girls and draw attention to the challenges they face.

Jen Albaugh is a former elementary school teacher and librarian currently working as a free-lance writer and editor in Toronto.

Plan International was founded in 1937. It is one of the world’s oldest and largest international charities, working in partnership with millions of people around the world to end global poverty. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, Plan has only one agenda: to improve the lives of children.

Dunces RockKate Jaimet

The Dunces—Josh, Magnolia, Wang and Wilmot—are back, and this time they’re going up against a formidable foe: Principal Hale, who has canceled their school’s drama and music program

just when Wilmot needs it most. He has a guitar (given to him by a teen named Headcase), but no teacher and nowhere to practice (his dad hates rock ’n’ roll). The Dunces’ plan to convince Principal Hale to reinstate the program involves Josh’s reluctant participation in a hockey team, Magnolia’s enthusiastic role-playing and Wang’s disillusionment with a suspicious character named Hui Bing (aka Larry). But can the Dunces really rock, even when they rebrand themselves as Uncle Willy and the Wang Dang Doodles?

Kate Jaimet developed an early taste for madcap plotlines due to childhood exposure to the novels of P.G. Wodehouse. Her batty characters are mainly based upon members of her own family. Kate enjoys limericks, yoga, clever repartee, kayaking and spending time with her two young daughters, except when they are trying to injure each other. 28 Tricks for a Fearless Grade 6Catherine Austen

You’ll survive…never fear!

Dave Davidson’s heart is in the right place. He believes it’s his mission to cure his friends of their fears. But his solutions are harebrained at best and often come with unintended and hilarious

consequences. Afraid of dancing at the school dance? Dave’s got ways to fix that: sprain an ankle, eat expired food to get sick or even get yourself suspended for a few days. Have a public-speaking phobia? Dave has fixes for that too: get laryngitis, forge a note from a therapist or get your friends to hold up cue cards.

This hilarious new novel will appeal to reluctant tween readers, especially boys.

Catherine Austen is the acclaimed author of many picture books and novels for young readers. 26 Tips for Surviving Grade 6 won the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award and the QWF Children’s Literature Prize.

Revenge on the FlySylvia McNicoll

When twelve-year-old William Alton and his father sail from England for new opportunities on the Empress of Ireland, they leave behind the graves of his mother and baby sister. Will only

hopes they will leave death and disease behind them too. But a shipmate’s baby falls ill and is forced into quarantine on Grosse Île, and when they finally arrive in their new home, they discover that Will’s Uncle Charlie is in the hospital. Why must everyone around him get sick and die?

A competition at Will’s new school offers an answer…and a challenge. In 1912, cities around the world declare war on the fly, blaming it for the spread of the diseases—summer complaint, typhus, consumption and typhoid—that are wiping out families. To avenge his mother and his sister, Will throws himself into the local fly-killing contest. But when his snobbish classmate Fred Leckie uses his wealth to give himself an advantage, Will’s own ingenuity and determination might not be enough to win. Can he beat Fred without cheating? How much does it matter?

Like Will, Sylvia McNicoll discovered a knack for writing because of a composition in the fourth grade. Today she is a full-time, award-winning author who has published more than thirty novels for young people.

Camp Dance is all about taking risks.

When Meg’s summer ballet program is canceled and her ballet teacher suggests she attend Camp Dance to learn new dance styles, Meg is devastated. Worse still, her teacher thinks

she lacks stage presence and needs to connect more with her audience. At camp, Meg struggles to learn contemporary dance. A girl named Logan, who is jealous of Meg’s ballet technique and her friendship with Nio, a cute contemporary dancer, makes Meg’s life even more difficult. When Meg, Nio and Logan have to work together to create a piece for the final show, arguments threaten to ruin their dance. Unless they are able to overcome their differences, Meg’s time at Camp Dance will have been a disaster from start to finish.

DJ wants it all: the car, the girl and the truth about his grandfather.

D J jets across the Atlantic to England to follow a series of obscure clues and symbols he hopes will reveal the truth about his grandfather. In London, he stays with Doris, the elderly woman he

climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with. Laid up with a broken ankle, Doris has her grandchild, Charlie, offer assistance. Charlie—short for Charlotte—is a beautiful model who is romantically (and secretly) linked to a member of the British Royal Family. Spies, guns, double agents, the Cambridge Five and a vintage E-Type Jag are a few of the things DJ and Charlie encounter on an adventure that makes climbing Kilimanjaro look like a walk in the park.

Eric Walters began writing in 1993 as a way to entice his grade-five students into becoming more interested in reading and writing. Since then, Eric has published over eighty books and won more than one hundred awards. Often his stories incorporate themes that reflect his background in education and social work and his commitment to humanitarian and social-justice issues. He speaks to over seventy thousand students per year, in schools throughout North America. Eric has three grown children and lives in Mississauga, Ontario, with his wife and two dogs. Nothing says “I love you” like plutonium.

S teve thinks he made the right choice turning down a snowy week with his cousins at a cabin in northern Ontario in favor of a relaxing (and perhaps romantic) time under the Spanish sun

with his friend, Laia. But when an email from his brother DJ arrives, implicating their grandfather in some shadowy international plots involving nuclear bombs, Steve and Laia immediately put aside all thoughts of a lazy, sun-drenched vacation. In a desperate attempt to find out if Steve’s grandfather was a Cold War-era spy, they crack mysterious codes, confront violent Russian mobsters, dodge spies, unearth a bomb and avoid nudists. But the more they uncover, the more Steve wonders: whose side was Grandpa really on?

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, John Wilson grew up on the Isle of Skye and outside Glasgow without the slightest idea that he would ever write books. After completing a degree in geology at St. Andrews University, he worked in Zimbabwe and Alberta before taking up writing full-time and moving to Lantzville on Vancouver Island in 1991. John is addicted to history and firmly believes that the past must have been just as exciting, confusing and complex to those who lived through it as our world is to us. He has written over forty books of fiction and nonfiction for kids, teens and adults, and has won or been shortlisted for many awards. For more information, visit www.johnwilsonauthor.com.

In the murky world of espionage, how can you tell who’s on your side?

When his brother Bunny vanishes from the Toronto City Hall skating rink, Spencer, a budding filmmaker, finds himself plunged into the stuff of movie thrillers: kidnapping, terrorists, intrigue,

a missing document, a world-famous pop star, disguises, romance and a rogue alligator. As he races the clock to save his brother, he must sort the real from the make-believe and unravel a murder mystery involving his grandfather. The last time Spencer got tangled up in an adventure from his grandfather’s past, he didn’t believe it was for real. Now he can’t get anyone to believe him when he says that Bunny has been kidnapped and that someone is going to die.

The Wolf and MeRichard Scrimger

Life isn’t about making sense. It’s a gift, and you do your best with it.

Bunny is in trouble. He’s been kidnapped from the skating rink at City Hall in Toronto, and now he’s locked in a cold basement room, still in his parka and skates. Where is he? And why do his

kidnappers keep asking questions about his dead grandpa and some weird national anthem? Bunny may not always know what’s going on, but he has an innocent’s ability to get to the heart of things and find out what it’s all about. When he manages to escape, he skates across hockey rinks and down frozen highways, always a few strides ahead of his kidnappers. He gets help along the way from an assortment of characters—some kindly, some crazy, some scary and at least one that will make your jaw drop.

Richard Scrimger is the award-winning author of twenty books for children and adults. His middle-school novel The Nose from Jupiter won the Mr. Christie’s Book Award. His books have appeared on ALA’s Kids’ Picks list and on The Globe and Mail and ALA’s notable books lists and have been translated into almost a dozen languages (actually, eleven). Richard lives in Toronto, is the father of four, and is used to being laughed at. For more information, visit www.scrimger.ca.

From the DeadNorah McClintock

The mean streets of Detroit hide a multitude of sins.

Rennie is in Uruguay when his cousins discover a secret cache at their dead grandfather’s cottage. Thousands of dollars in foreign currencies. A mystifying notebook. Multiple passports, some

obviously fake. A gun. A disguise. And a photo of some Nazis. Rennie’s mission: to find out whether there was more to the old man than anyone knew. Was he a spy? If he was, what did he do? And for whom? Did he help a Nazi war criminal escape justice? Rennie’s quest leads him to Argentina and then to Detroit, where he finds more questions than answers and more than one gun pointed—and fired—in his direction.

Norah McClintock writes mystery and crime fiction for young adult readers. She is the author of the Chloe and Levesque, Mike and Riel, Robyn Hunter, and Ryan Dooley series, as well as many stand-alone novels. Norah grew up in Montreal, Quebec, is a graduate of McGill University (in history, of all things) and lives in Toronto, Ontario. She is a five-time winner of the Crime Writers of Canada’s Arthur Ellis Award for Best Juvenile Crime Novel. Her novels have been translated into sixteen languages. When things hit you out of nowhere, pick yourself up and pretend nothing happened.

J im Webb’s pursuit of the truth about his grandfather’s role in the Vietnam War puts him squarely in the sights of someone high up in the US military—someone who wants certain events from

that war left in the past. Webb goes on the run in the American Deep South with Lee, a Vietnam vet, trying to smoke out the man they call the Bogeyman by using Webb as bait. The Bogeyman may be powerful and smart, but Webb and Lee, with the help of a few of Lee’s old army buddies (and one motorcycle-riding girl), are ready to take him down.

Sigmund Brouwer is the bestselling author of nineteen novels and several series of children’s books, including titles in the Orca Echoes, Orca Currents and Orca Sports series, with over three million books in print in seven different languages. His 2012 novel, Devil’s Pass, was a finalist for the John Spray Mystery Award, a Red Maple nominee and a Kirkus Reviews Critics’ Pick. For more infor-mation, visit www.rockandroll-literacy.com. Adam discovers the true meaning of “live and let die.”

When Adam Murphy learns that his late, revered grandfather, David McLean, hid a huge stash of foreign cash and fake passports in the family’s cottage, he is stunned. Was Grandpa really a

traitor, as some of the evidence suggests? And why was a loaded Walther PPK pistol hidden at the cottage? Determined to prove his grandfather’s innocence, Adam takes the famous James Bond gun and follows the clues to Bermuda, where he encounters danger, evidence of espionage, and an unusual girl named Angel Dahl. Desperate and on the run with Angel, pursued by a deadly operative, Adam races to other exotic locations, unsure if Angel is friend or foe, or if his grandfather was a hero or a villain. Three clues hold the dark secret of David McLean’s past—the letter W, a glass eye with a golden iris, and the haunting words of someone named Mr. Know.

Shane Peacock is a biographer, journalist, screenwriter and the author of more than a dozen books for young readers, including The Boy Sherlock Holmes series. His work has won many honors, and his novel, Becoming Holmes, was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award. Because Shane often writes about unusual subjects, his research methods have, at times, been out of the ordinary too; he has learned the arts of tight-rope walking, silent killing, trapeze flying and sumo eating, all in the service of his art. Shane and his wife, journalist Sophie Kneisel, live with their three children on a small farm near Cobourg, Ontario, where he continues to search for and imagine larger-than-life characters. In his spare time he enjoys playing hockey, reading, and sometimes even walking the wire. For more information, visit www.shanepeacock.ca.

Rachel’s HopeShelly Sanders

Rachel, a young Jewish woman from a small town in Russia, has made an incredible journey. Forced to leave her homeland because of the anti-Semitic violence that killed her father, she has

made her way across land and sea to find refuge in Shanghai, China. Separated from her sweetheart, Sergei—a Christian who stayed behind to make his way in revolutionary Russia—Rachel finally gets to America—to California—where she won’t let anything stop her from achieving her goal of starting a new life—not poverty, not the great California earthquake. She meets and is inspired by women’s vote activists Emma Goldman and Anna Strunsky. When Rachel and Sergei are finally reunited, they realize that they have grown to have different dreams of what it means to be free. This is the final book in the Rachel Trilogy.

Shelly Sanders was inspired to create the character Rachel (Rachel’s Secret, Rachel’s Promise, Rachel’s Hope) by the story of her grandmother, who fled Russia as a girl to escape the persecution of Jews, making her way to Shanghai, China, and then on to America. She went on to become the first Jewish woman to be accepted into University of California, Berkeley’s science program.

“[A]n engrossing family drama in which both young and old learn what it means to grow up.” —Kirkus Reviews

N ix Humbolt doesn’t talk much. Though at fifteen he’s taller and leaner than in his “Fatty Humbolt” days, he still lies low at school. At home, Nix finds refuge in his father’s workshop,

Twist of the BladeThe Shards of Excalibur, Book II

Edward Willett

The race is on to find the second Shard of Excalibur. Someone’s got a head start…and it’s not Ariane.

Having saved the first Shard of the sword Excalibur from Internet mogul Rex Major (aka Merlin), Ariane and Wally are on the lookout for the second. Wally’s worried that the power

of the first Shard is already changing Ariane, giving her the strength to do good and evil—and when she seriously hurts his bullying sister, Flish, it seems he’s right.

Meanwhile, they have a serious problem: Ariane’s located the second Shard in France. Sure, her inherited powers from the Lady of the Lake enable her to travel magically through fresh water, but it hasn’t escaped their notice that there’s a huge saltwater ocean separating them from their next target. And Rex Major is already on his way there.

As Major uses Wally’s doubts—and his secret wish to be more than just a nerdy sidekick—to cause a rift between the friends, Ariane takes the chance to go it alone. But if the first Shard’s power is barely controllable, how will she fare when two Shards are united? And what can Wally do to get his friend back?

Edward Willett is the award-winning author of nearly fifty science fiction and fantasy, science and other nonfiction books for both young readers and adults.

Meringue’s loyalties are tested when she’s drawn into the world of drug dealing.

Martin’s been diagnosed with ADHD, but he feels something about his diagnosis isn’t right. The Ritalin he’s prescribed doesn’t seem to make a difference. When Martin’s grades

continue to sink no matter how hard he tries, his father writes him off as lazy and just plain stupid. His dad is convinced that Martin just needs to focus more on his studies and less on making movies.

One night while out pursuing his passion on the city streets with his camera, Martin meets Stick and is introduced to the energetic and exciting pastime of parkour—free running. While filming Stick’s flips and tricks, Martin begins to see a connection between how his brain interprets the world, all jumbled and fast-moving and out of order, and what the free runners see. Camera in hand, Martin sets out to make a video that will show his dad what he sees and, Martin hopes, get him to understand that Martin’s real learning disability, dyslexia, has never been properly diagnosed.

The Innocence DeviceWilliam Kowalski

T he year is 2147. Chago, twenty-four, is a prisoner in a world made up only of prisoners and those who guard them. The only bright spot in Chago’s life is his son, Jim-Jim, whose mother is a guard.

In an effort to resolve overcrowding in the prison, the warden introduces the Innocence Device, a high-tech machine he claims can determine innocence or guilt. Prisoners are encouraged to walk through the Innocence Device and experience its rewards: immediate freedom or death. When they discover the machine is rigged, the prisoners riot and take over the prison. After witnessing the execution-style death of the mother of his son, and surviving a brief stint outside the prison walls, Chago ends up in a position of power. But he soon finds the new regime little different from the old, and he sets out to save the only thing he values—his son.

The Innocence Device is William Kowalski’s fifth title in the Rapid Reads series. Kowalski is also an adult-education consultant, specializing in delivering curriculum to adults who are unemployed, under-educated and struggling to survive. William can be found at williamkowalski.com and @WillKowalski.
