Reminders about shifting:

• The whole hand moves as a unit.

• Don’t leave your thumb behind, it is part of your hand.

• Move your hand by sliding up the fingerboard, quickly and smoothly.

• Also, when shifting down, move as a whole unit again – quickly and smoothly.

Practicing the shifts:

• When practicing your shifts – take the two notes you are shifting between and work on them first.

• Then put the whole exercise together.• The more you learn the movement between the

notes you are shifting and the position you are shifting to, the easier the process will get.

• When shifting, check the note you are shifting to with an open string if you can – this will help to build your sense of tuning and placement of your hand.
