W elcome to today's performance of the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra.
As I celebrate my 10th year with this group of talented musicians, it is gratifying to reflect upon the remarkable growth the
Orchestra has achieved over the years. The dedication and diligence of each member is evident in the ever improving level of artistry displayed
in each performance. The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra's 2008/2009 season offers a dynamic array of music selections from traditional works to new favorites. The entire family will enjoy performances such as RimskiKorsakov's lush Scheherazade; Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf (narrated King FM "Classic Kids' announcer, Marta Zekan); Tchaikovsky's rousing Capriccio ltalien; and a host of popular music included on our Holiday Pops concert in December and our Music Around the World Pops concert in June. Be sure to visit our web-site at www.sammamishsymphony.org for a complete listing of works presented this season.
Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert!

PROGRAM NOTES FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN
AARON COPLAND (1900-1990)
A aron Copland was an American composer of concert and film
music. He was an accomplished pianist with a distinctly American style which led to his being known as "the Dean of American composers." Born in Brooklyn to an unmusical family, Copland's passion for music was greatly enlarged on a trip to Paris, where he was influenced by the beautiful sounds of composers like Stravinsky. By the early 1940's, Copland had developed his own style of music and was asked to write a fanfare for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to play at the beginning of each concert. It was wartime, and Eugene Goossens, CSO's conductor, wanted to honor those serving in the military. Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man is a brilliant, stirring, patriotic piece, and since its premiere it has become a favorite in the American songbook. It has been used in TV and advertising such as a U.S. Navy recruitment ad. Most recently, Fanfare was played on September 28, 2008 in the closing ceremonies at New York's Shea Stadium, complete with fireworks. Copland wanted to create music that would appeal to the masses, the common man, and his works have indeed done so. He won the Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award nominations and awards for his compositions and film scores, contributing much to American music in his 90 years.
NEW ENGLAND TRIPTYCH WILLIAM SCHUMAN
(1910'-1992)
William Schuman was .an American composer and music
administrator. Bornin the Bronx, New York City, Schuman grew up with an interest in music. Attending
NYU, he also worked in advertising and wrote many songs with Frank Laesser. At the request of his sister, he attended a concert at Carnegie Hall and was completely inspired and captivated with the size and sound of the symphony orchestra. From that point on, he wanted to spend his life composing and went to the Malkin Conservatory. His instructor there, Roy Harris, introduced him to conductor Koussevitzky who later championed many of Schuman's symphonies. Schuman won the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Music for his cantata, A Free Song, adapted from the poems of Walt Whitman. Then, after teaching at Sarah Lawrence College until 1945, Schuman became president of the Julliard School of Music where he founded the Julliard String Quartet. Schuman was the first president of the Lincoln Center, a position he held until 1969.
New England Triptych was written in 1956 and was based on melodies by William Billings (1744-1899.)The piece is in three movements and originally had words which were in the program when Schuman first presented it to audiences. The first movement is fugal, the second is

based on a round, and the third is Billings' best known tune, based on a church hymn. It had been adopted by the Continental Army as a marching song. It is ironic that New England Triptych has become one of the pieces most associated with William Schuman, since it does not contain any of his own melodies. But the feeling of patriotism, American ruggedness and religious fervor is very characteristic of the work of Schuman as it was of Billings. New England Triptych had become an American favorite.
RHAPSODY IN BLUE GEORGE GERSHWIN
(1898-1937)
Born to immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York, Gershwin
quit school at age fifteen to be a song-plugger for a publishing firm on Tin Pan Alley. He recorded many rolls for player pianos, including a couple of songs he wrote, Swanee and Rhapsody in Blue. Written during the Jazz Age, in the 1920's, Rhapsody was said to be inspired by the rattle and roll rhythm of the train Gershwin was riding on in Boston. The title came to him upon seeing James McNeil Whistler's painting called "Nocturne

PROGRAM NOTES in Black and Gold." Rhapsody in Blue was written for a concert in 1924 called "An Experiment in Modern Music." Many prominent people were in the audience, such as Sergi Rachmaninoff, Jascha Heifetz, and Efrem Zimbalist, Sr. Gershwin's piece was a huge hit, the favorite out
of all the pieces on the program. It had a very American quality in its boldness and energy and combined several of the musical influences in Gershwin's life, including Scott Joplin's rags for the piano, Harlem club jazz, Yiddish theater music, and post-Romantic styles. This piece,

with its recognizable wailing clarinet opening, along with all the hits he wrote for Broadway, has continued to be successful through the decades, has made Gershwin one of the most successful and beloved composers of all time.
SYMPHONY NO. 2, OPUS 30 HOWARD HANSON
(1896-1981)
Howard Hanson was one of the first American composers to
receive widespread prominence. He had a romantic style, and in 1921 was the first American to receive the Prix de Rome. Hanson remained in Italy for a few years after this honor and was influenced by composers such as Respighi and Sibelius. Upon returning to the United States, Hanson conducted the New York Symphony and was then chosen to be the director of the Eastman School of Music. He remained there for forty years, turning it into one of the most prestigious music schools in America.
Symphony No. 2 was commissioned to celebrate Boston Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary in 1930 and has become his best known work. Hanson's colorful orchestral language is appreciated by audiences. His warm, accessible melodies are lush and lyrical and beloved by audiences around the world. Hanson won a Pulitzer Prize for his music in 1946 and wrote an important textbook on musical set theory in 1960. He continued to conduct and compose into his 80's and was truly an American treasure.
