About the Wellcome Trust • An independent global charitable
founda9on, dedicated to improving health
• Over next five years will spend £5bn • Long-‐standing supporter of open
access and data sharing • A founding sponsor of ORCID -‐
involved since ORCID’s incep9on in 2010
Mandating ORCID in grant applications • Since July 2015 grant applicants have
been required to include ORCID on grant applica9ons
• Mandatory field – can only submit grant applica9on with a valid ORCID
• No problems iden9fied
Why mandate ORCID? • Supports beRer links
between researchers and their research works (more accurate records)
• Simplifies and speed up grant applica9on and (downstream) the repor9ng processes
• Reduce the administra9ve burden on researchers
Future ORCID integration
• Pull in publica9on and other research outputs from ORCID
• Push grant data back to ORCID
Development #1: Pulling publication (and other data) from ORCID
• Integra9on with ORCID requires pulling selected papers, and providing means for users to annotate
• Could also pull in informa9on rela9ng to datasets – support our data sharing requirements
Current process for soliciting publication history
Development #2: Pushing grant data to ORCID
• Just as Crossref can push publica9on data to ORCID, so funders should push Grant data to ORCID
• Grantees s9ll control their ORCID – and can deny the right for others to write to their ORCID record
• If implemented, would lead to more accurate grantee data being made available – which could, poten9ally, be queried by publisher manuscript submission systems
Development #2 Pushing grant data to ORCID
• Just as Crossref can push publica9on data to ORCID, so funders should push Grant data to ORCID
• Grantees s9ll control their ORCID – and can deny the right for others to push data
• If implemented, would lead to more accurate grantee data being made available – which could, poten9ally, be queried by publisher manuscript submission systems
Conclusion • Integra9ng ORCID into Funder workflows can help reduce
administra9ve work in grant applica9ons and research ac9vity repor9ng.
• Trust has made a good start – manda9ng that applicants must have an ORCID when applying for funding
• Now needs to build on this and fully integrate ORCID into the grant submission and ac9vity repor9ng workflows
