If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. C.S. Lewis

Whether our present earthly context is an actively hostile dictatorship or a relatively benevolent democracy, one day the glory and the power of this kingdom too will come to an end, and there may be others after it. This world and its constantly changing kingdoms are not what life is all about. Iain Duguid

In the year 586 BC, the Babylonian empire plundered and destroyed the city of Jerusalem. Thousands of Jews were forcibly taken from their homes and carried off to Babylon to live as exiles. They were now living as ethnic and spiritual minorities in the middle of a powerful empire that served different gods and had profoundly different values from them.

The life of an exile has been described as an experience where you are no longer at home . No matter what you do, you just don’t quite “fit”—in your city, in your school, in your neighborhood, or in your own skin. And, to make matters worse, an exile is also someone who is unable to return to their home. In other words, the fundamental feeling of dislocation that exiles experience is something that persists throughout their lives.

As it turns out, living in exile turns out to be a major theme in the Bible. In fact, when writing to Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor, the Apostle Peter refers to his readers as “exiles”—even though many of them were probably living in their hometowns.

By applying the paradigm of exiles to all Christians, Peter is telling us that to be a follower of Jesus means to embrace the story of exile. This means that exile should be one of the primary ways in which we make sense of our lives in the world.

As we shall see, the remedy for exile is not something we can achieve for ourselves. Instead, the cure for our exile is the gracious presence of God. He came into the world as an exile himself, joining us in our condition. And through his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, he has set us free.

Yet even with the glorious reality of the presence of Jesus right now through the power of the Holy Spirit, we long for a greater experience of his presence. We long for his return because on that day, we will finally be home again.

Let us worship!

Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible.  George Orwell

I sat alone in the dark one night Tuning in by remote I found a preacher who spoke of the light But there was brimstone in his throat He'd show me the way according to him In return for my personal check I flipped my channel back to CNN And I lit another cigarette. Mary Chapin Carpenter I'll Take My Chances

For our Christian witness to be taken seriously in the West’s increasingly pluralistic and secular environment, Christians must learn the art of:

• Remaining true to our beliefs and convictions; • Genuinely loving, listening to, and serving those who do not

share our beliefs and convictions; and • Consistently doing both at the same time.

If we do not value this combination, then instead of being a light to the culture, we risk becoming products of it. If we cling doggedly to our convictions but fail to love, listen to, and serve those who do not share them, we become products of a moralistic Pharisee culture, which is not gospel culture.

If we do the opposite, we become products of a capitulating Sadducee culture, which is also not gospel culture. Truth without grace is unwelcoming and shaming. Grace without truth is cowardly and enabling. Only when we combine grace and truth do we rightly embody the gospel.Scott Sauls

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;     he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,     but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him;     strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,     ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;     bring an offering, and come into his courts! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;     tremble before him, all the earth!

William KetheTune: "Old Hundredth" (Doxology)

All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the LORD with cheerful voice. Serve him with joy, his praises tell, come now before him and rejoice!   Know that the LORD is God indeed; he formed us all without our aid. We are the flock he surely feeds, the sheep who by his hand were made.   O enter then his gates with joy, within his courts his praise proclaim! Let thankful songs your tongues employ. O bless and magnify his name!   Because the LORD our God is good, his mercy is forever sure. His faithfulness at all times stood and shall from age to age endure.

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

I N T E R L U D E Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

Standing C O N F E S S I O N O F S I N From ‘The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers’

O God of Grace, You have imputed my sin to my Substitute, And have imputed his righteousness to my soul. Clothing me with a bridegroom’s robe, decking me with riches and crown of holiness though I did not earn them.

But in my Christian walk I am still in rags; my best prayers are stained with sin; my confessions of sin seem to happen far too often, yet I sin even more than I care to confess. Even my following the Spirit is hampered by selfishness.

I need to repent of my self-centered repentance; I need my tears to be washed; I have no robe to bring to cover my sins, no loom to weave my own righteousness.

I am always standing clothed in filthy garments, and by grace am always receiving forgiveness; for you always justify the ungodly sinners you have saved.

I am always going into the far country, and always returning home as a prodigal, always saying “Father, forgive me,” and you are always bringing me your best robe.

Every morning let me wear it, every evening return in it, go out to the day’s work in it, stand before the great white throne in it, enter heaven in it shining as the sun.

Father, let me never lose sight of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, the exceeding righteousness of Christ’s salvation, the exceeding glory of Christ, the exceeding beauty of holiness, the exceeding wonder of grace. Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Adapted from Psalm 32

In Christ, we have so much comfort in the promises that if we come to God in prayer, He will forgive every one of our sins! David says:

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Therefore Family, let us heed Our Father's instructions on this road of Grace:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.

Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!   May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 1

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

™™ ™™Be ex alt- ed,- Lord, in your strength!

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you.”

G O S P E L L E S S O N Bearing Witness: Part 2 Daniel 4:10-27 Rev. John Haralson

Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. Grace Kids ages Kindergarten to 2nd grade meets in downstairs in Room #102 during the sermon.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

The Sursum Corda (Latin: “Lift up your hearts”) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord’s table.

T h e S u r s u m C o r d a

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus (Latin: “Holy”) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father’s glory (Isaiah 6:1-3; Matthew 21:9).

Let us go forth and serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!

Members of the prayer team will be available to pray for you at the front of the sanctuary at the conclusion of each service.

B E N E D I C T I O N Adapted from Ephesians 3:16-19

According to the riches of God the Father's glory may he grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. For the rest of the Spring, we are using Sally Lloyd-Jones' "Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing", having a short time for crafts and singing songs together.  If you would like your little one to participate, we will dismiss the class after the "Passing of the Peace", portion of the service, directing the kids to follow the main teacher for the week, (which will be a rotation of  Katie Truelove, Nicole Rule, or Pastor Jason standing at the back of the sanctuary).  The lesson will conclude during the offering time, at which time the students will rejoin parents for Communion.

Support for LGBT Individuals and Families By: Soul Care Seattle @ The Layne Sexual Minority Group seeks to provide community for people in the church who experience non-heterosexual attractions or conflict with their gender. This ministry offers a safe place for people to ask questions, be understood, and do life together, within the context of a theologically conservative community, while seeking to understand who we are in relationship with God.

Meeting Time: Second and Fourth Tuesday of each month starting in September at 7:00PM-9:00PM

Parents and Families Group provides support for family members of those who identify as LGBTQ, experience same-sex attraction, or experience gender dysphoria.  A loved one’s journey in this area can be very painful and confusing for those who care deeply for the individual.  This group offers support and encouragement as family members learn how to love well and grieve well the pain that they and their loved one may feel over this issue.

Daniel 4

[4:1] King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you! [2] It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.

[3] How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation. [4] I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. [5] I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me. [6] So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. [7] Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation. [8] At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods—and I told him the dream, saying, [9] “O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no mystery is too difficult for you, tell me the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation. [10] The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. [11] The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. [12] Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

[13] “I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven. [14] He proclaimed aloud and said thus: ‘Chop down the tree and lop off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. [15] But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth. [16] Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him; and let seven periods of time pass over him. [17] The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.’ [18] This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

[19] Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was dismayed for a while, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you and its interpretation for your enemies! [20] The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, so that its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth, [21] whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which beasts of the field found shade, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens lived—[22]

it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the ends of the earth. [23] And because the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven periods of time pass over him,’ [24] this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, [25] that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. [26] And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be confirmed for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules. [27] Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”

[28] All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. [29] At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, [30] and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” [31] While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, [32] and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” [33] Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws.

[34] At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever,

for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; [35] all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” [36] At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. [37] Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
