O come, O come, Emmanuel

"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").- Matthew 1:23

Today is the first Sunday of Advent which begins on the fourth Sunday

before Christmas. “Advent” is derived from the Latin word meaning “coming”

or “arrival.”

During the season of Advent, we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world

and watch with expectant hope for his coming again. The four weeks of Advent

present an opportunity for communal discernment and personal examination,

as the church prepares to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord and looks with

hope for Christ’s return.

Advent is also a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare

for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a

Messiah. In Advent, we are reminded of how much we ourselves also need a

Saviour, and we look forward to our Saviour’s second coming even as we

prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. It’s the season when we

look back to Christ’s first coming, as a baby born in Bethlehem, and look forward

to his second coming when he will return to renew and redeem every part of

fallen creation.

Take time this busy holiday season to meditate - either on your own, as

a family or in care groups and discipleship groups - on the promises of God

and to anticipate the fulfilment of the second coming. Jesus Christ has come

and will come again. The advent season is therefore a time to reflect upon the

promises of God and to anticipate the fulfilment of those promises. It is a time

for remembering and rejoicing.

One of the most popular Advent hymns is "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel."

Crying out for Emmanuel to come is a response to a prophetic text in Isaiah. In

Isaiah 7:14, the prophet says, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."

This verse refers to Jesus. He was born of a virgin. He was Emmanuel, which

is an English rendering of the Hebrew phrase that means "with us God."

When we sing this song, we put ourselves into the place of “captive Israel,

that mourns in lonely exile here.” We pray to be set free “from Satan's tyranny.”

We ask our coming Lord to "disperse the gloomy clouds of night" and “death's

dark shadows put to flight.”

Page 5: ORDER OF SERVICE · God is with us. In our doubt and fear, God is with us. Through Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit, God is with us. And not just with us, but for us, beside

As we long for the second coming of Emmanuel, there is much we cannot

understand about our world. We cannot understand why the innocent suffer,

why God does not make things better right now. But, in our perplexity, we do

know something that keeps us going, something that strengthens us in the

midst of sorrow and confusion. We know that Jesus is Emmanuel, God with

us. In our pain and confusion, God is with us. In our sadness and yearning,

God is with us. In our doubt and fear, God is with us. Through Jesus Christ

and through the Holy Spirit, God is with us. And not just with us, but for us,

beside us, before us, behind us, within us, and among us. So we are comforted,

even as we pray, "O Come, O come, Emmanuel.”

There is no greater promise than that God will be with us in our darkness

and suffering and we see this fulfilled in Jesus Christ. God with us, with us in

the darkness, with us in the trials of life. And what does Jesus say at the end

of Matthew’s gospel, his very last words to his disciples? He says, “I am with

you always, to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:20). This promise continues for

us. Love came down at Christmas and stayed.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel may be the oldest Christmas carol still

sung today. The author is unknown, but he is believed to have been a priest

or a monk who wrote it before 800 A.D. It was translated into many languages

and used in most Christian denominations in the world.

O come, O come, Emmanuel

And ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here

Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.
