Intersetting Communication and the Transition to School
This mixed methods research study examined communication between preschool and school educators at the time of children’s transition to school. It involved educators in two states of Australia and used data collection techniques adapted from the communication audit approach. The results present a complex picture of preschool-school communication including issues which impact on the practice, educator’s motives and the outcomes of educator communications. These results have contributed to the development of an enhanced model of preschool-school communication.

Exploring Practice and Taking Action to Enable Human Rights and Occupational Justice in an Australian Hospital Context: An Action Research Study
This thesis argues that occupational therapists working in Australian hospitals should engage in regular discussions with their colleagues about human rights and justice issues. When therapists consider and discuss justice issues with their peers they are more likely to feel inspired and able to make changes to their practice that reduce instances of injustice and that promote inclusion and equal access to engagement in life's activities for all people.

A qualitative Study of the Career Decision-Making Experiences of Mothers who are Occupational Therapists
This thesis presents an investigation of mothers' decision-making about their careers. Decision-making was found to be complex and recurring. A matrix was developed that includes four perspectives (personal, familial, workplace, and societal) and six factors (expectation and responsibility, support, motivation, flexibility, conflict, and life balance) that influence decision-making. Mothers may be supported in returning to their careers by allowing them time to experience the effects of their decisions and accepting the decisions will be made and re-made as circumstances change.

Clinical Learning Spaces: Crucibles for Development of Professional Practice Capabilities
This research significantly contributes new knowledge of professional practice capabilities, the complex nature of clinical learning spaces, and the manner in which professional practice capabilities are developed within those spaces. This knowledge is drawn together in a professional development crucible model. The way that a range of practice capabilities are developed and coalesce to inform professional identity and produce professional practitioners capable of flourishing in 21st Century healthcare contexts has profound implications for professional and practice-based education pedagogy and curricula.

The Competing Demands of Adolescent TBI Rehabilitation: An Investigation of Adolescents' Perceived Confidence and Competence in Executive Functioning Skills Following Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury
This study investigated how adolescents who had sustained a brain injury perceived their everyday thinking skills. The perceptions of a parent of each adolescent were also sought. Findings indicated the levels of confidence and competence perceived by adolescents and their parents with regard to thinking skills varied, with adolescents focused on developing confidence in their skills and parents more focused on observing competent skill use. Study findings were synthesised with existing rehabilitation frameworks and models of adolescent development to develop the Ripe for Rehab framework.

A Novel Framework of Cloud Based E-learning Architecture for Higher Education
In developing countries, there is no proper framework for the country like Bangladesh to develop a quality e-learning system. The goal of this research is to introduce a possible framework to adopt a cloud based e-learning system in higher educational institutes. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 70 universities of Bangladesh. The regression testing in this study showed that cloud adoption is much more dominant than strategic alignment for IT effectiveness. This study would prompt the decision makers to introduce e-learning system in their institutes through quality framework for e-learning based on cloud computing.

Inside The Tent With Half A Loaf Of Bread: A Critical Analysis Of The Neoliberalisation Of Community Welfare Organisations Engaged In Welfare To Work
The thesis examines the neoliberalisation of community welfare organisations as sites of welfare to work extension. It takes a political economy perspective that draws on the concept of the 'neoliberalisation of space' from social geography (Peck & Tickell, 2002) to explore organisational change as experienced by elite community welfare agents. It combines this with a Critical Discourse Analysis to explore power relations, contest, social agency and emergent neoliberal social relations within the community welfare sector. It concludes that power operated in multiple and non-transparent ways to privilege conservative and paternalistic views about unemployment, displacing relations of solidarity with clients and compromising organisational missions. In doing so it examines the path of CWOs from progressive organisations to institutionally networked sites of neoliberal welfare to work.

Forest Community Development: Enhancing Corporate Social Responsibility in Indonesia's Forestry Sector
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is commonly understood to mean a sharing of benefits between companies and the wider community. In the Indonesian forestry sector, the concept of CSR is helpful for understanding the challenges and opportunities that arise in the relationship between forest companies and local communities. The findings from this research indicate that forest companies often have a narrow interpretation of CSR, yet local communities often have a more expansive view of CSR.

Towards Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries: An Analysis of Ecotourism Implementation in the Kakum Conservation Area, Ghana
This research examined how ecotourism in protected areas can contribute to poverty reduction in developing countries, using Ghana as a case study. Findings show that achieving conservation and local development goals through ecotourism implementation requires a political process involving negotiation of competing agendas amongst multiple stakeholders including local communities. This research provides an understanding of the role and potential of ecotourism in reducing poverty, and serves as the basis for ecotourism implementation and management in developing countries.

Equipping Poor People for Climate Change: Local Institutions and Pro-Poor Adaptation for Rural Communities in Nepal
Climate change has differential impacts on people according to a household's wellbeing status. Research in Nepal found that adaptation practices are largely governed by access to education, information and resources. Local institutions, which have potential to play an important role in adaptation, are led by local elites who use the institutional platform to gain and sustain their traditional power and feudal legacies, and are not found to be committed to reducing individual and household level risks and vulnerabilities of the most vulnerable.

Kuenga's research explored the nature of transhumant agro-pastoralism in Bhutan where cattle herders migrate south in winter to access pasture and employment. The study found a 31% decline in the number of households practiciing a seasonal migration in the last 20 years. The decline was due to labour shortage, livelihood choices, government policies and climate change. Nevertheless, cattle migration persists as an important part of living cultural heritage in Bhutan. The findings are contributing to government policies on resource allocation and community development.

Karolina PETROVIC
Herbivory of Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus Vulpecula, Marsupialia: Phalangeridae) at Different Scales of Resource Heterogeneity
Karolina's research explores food preferences of leaf-eating brushtail possums. Possum diets were studied in relation to variation in availability and nutritional quality of food across a landscape within territories and between individual trees. Despite their broad diet she found possums preferred to eat leaves of exotic trees, wattles and parasitic plants over eucalypt leaves, indicating that food availability trumps nutritional quality. Rather than unique to possums, these findings have important implications for our understanding of factors underlying dietary decisions of herbivores generally.

The Future of Farming in Rural Amenity Landscapes: The role of planning and governance in a changing landscape.
This research investigated the role of farming and land use planning in rural amenity landscapes. A qualitative case study of Indigo Shire in north east Victoria involved interviews with farmers, government officials and councillors. Government planning processes struggled to address the needs of this multifunctional, working landscape. Farming and food production issues were increasingly being ignored by local government, despite growing diversification and interest in local food. Greater appreciation of the role of farming in rural amenity landscapes is needed.

Wild pollinator communities of native woodlands and commercial almond plantations in a semi-arid Australian landscape: Implications for conservation of insects and ecosystem services
This is the first detailed study of insect communities in almond orchards in Australia, focussing specifically on those species which may act as pollinators of this important food crop. Dr Saunders found that heterogeneous native vegetation surrounding almond orchards, and a ground cover of flowering herbs within crops was crucial for supporting pollinating insects. This research is one of only a few studies in Australia to examine the potential for native insects to provide critical services to growers in agricultural regions.
Katrina SINCLAIR
Transformative Change in Contemporary Australian Agriculture
This doctoral research drew on resilience thinking and transition theory to examine Australian government attempts to transform the dairy industry. Market deregulation of the Subtropical dairy industry substantially altered the culture, structure and working practices of the industry, including shifting the balance of power from farmers to supermarkets. This research suggests those embarking on deliberate transformations should be aware their interventions will have unintended consequences and has been published in two peer-reviewed journals and presented at three international conferences.
Lisa Therese SMALLBONE
Understanding Bird Responses in Regenerating Agricultural Landscapes
Lisa studied native birds in bushland that has regenerated after lifestyle (or 'tree change') properties replaced traditional farming in central Victoria. She found that regenerating bushland provides valuable habitat for many native birds, including species that are declining in other regions of south-east Australia. Computer modelling showed that bird species will change over time, as the regenerating bushland gets older and habitat conditions change. Lisa's work demonstrates the importance of natural regeneration of bushland for birds and biodiversity.
Fleur Elizabeth STELLING
Perceptions and Management of Shrubby Regrowth in South-Eastern Australia
This research explored how changing environments are understood and symbolised. Stakeholders in a shrubby regrowth region in rural South Eastern Australia were found to view regrowth through "Control", "Accept" and "Ambivalent" frames that influence their understanding and management behaviours. Ambivalence suggests active social construction of meaning about the regrowth. The findings contribute to global scholarship on human-nature relations in rapidly changing rural landscapes, and how behaviours may be influenced to facilitate multiple human and environmental outcomes.
