Artist Statement This year’s artwork series visualizes the thematic chapters of the church calendar using simple geometric illustrations to highlight the interconnected nature of the chapters. Each chapter is a standalone piece of artwork, but together they will form a collective mosaic that symbolizes the holistic story of the church calendar.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6

No matter who you are—a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality—God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on the journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God’s grace is for people just like you.

In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from the wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, and hear from God’s word.

We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along. ‘

Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that the danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. Every week we gather to meet with God, strengthen our ties to one another, and welcome strangers into our congregation.

For these reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal.

In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us.

Let us worship!

Shut your mouth; open your eyes and ears. Take in what is there and give no thought to what might have been there or what is somewhere else. That can come later, if it must come at all. (And notice here how the true training for anything whatever that is good always prefigures and, if submitted to, will always help us in, the true training for the Christian life.) C.S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie roll pop? The world may never know… Tootsie Roll Pop: How Many Licks (Commercial, 1982)

We are all optimalists of this kind, perhaps reinforced by the doctrines of evolutionary psychology (which say exactly that all discord is harmony misunderstood) or by faith in an inevitable evolving “future of freedom.” Attacks on these beliefs-September 11th was the most acute-shake us up the way eighteenth-century people were shaken by the Lisbon earthquake. The realization that all may not be tending toward the best, that religious fanaticism and tribal intolerance could prevail over liberal meliorism, is the earthquake of our time. Adam Gopnick, “Voltaire’s Garden”, The New Yorker, March 7, 2005, (reviewing philosophical and religious critiques found in Voltaire’s “Candide”)

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. The Apostle Paul, Philippians 4:8

The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.

The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy” available here

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12

Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Lord, these are confusing and frustrating times we live in, It is so tempting to arrive at a judgment On ourselves and on our neighbors It is so easy to arrive at a matter Concerning the fate of this world, Or a judgment that you cannot be fully trusted

Help us to remember your words, The secret things belong to the LORD our God, And may you forgive our hubris, That we know better than You.

We repent with the words of Job, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things  too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent into dust and ashes.”

O God have mercy, Hear our prayers of repentance, Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Our Lord promises to us, In returning and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and trust will be our strength. The Lord asks us to trust Him, As creatures before the Creator As disciples obeying the Savior Salvation is for those who trust Jesus as their only hope

In humility, we pray the words of David: Lord, our hearts are not lifted up; our eyes are not raised too high; We do not occupy ourselves with things too great and too marvelous for us. But we have calmed and quieted our souls, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child are our souls within us.

O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore!

May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 44

O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free;

for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them.

You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.

But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.

All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

S E R M O N T E X T

[8:14]  There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. [15] And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun. [16] When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night do one's eyes see sleep, [17] then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out. (Ecclesiastes 8:14-17)   [7:15]  In my vain  life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing. [16] Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? [17] Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time? [18]  It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them. (Ecclesiastes 7:15-18)

[9:7] Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do. [8] Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head. [9] Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. [10] Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going. (Ecclesiastes 9:7-10)

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Sunday Worship & Other Church Gatherings. We will be worshiping by live stream every Sunday at 10am on our YouTube page (search for “Grace Church Seattle” on YouTube). If you are comfortable doing so, we are encouraging households to join together for worship in their homes.

All in-person meetings have been suspended. Many Community Groups, men's groups, and women's Bible studies have transitioned to all on-line meetings. In addition, our Youth Community Group (YCG) has begun to meet on Sundays via Zoom. We are working to put together more online gatherings each week. To find out more, please contact our leadership team and check our website for updates.

Pastoral Care. Please contact us if you have needs or if you have resources you would like to offer our community. We can be reached here ([email protected]).

Loving God. During this season, in addition to continuing to maintain your practice of Sunday worship—though in the new online format—we are encouraging you to do two things:

Daily Prayer & Scripture Reading. We have three great resources to help you pray and read Scripture more regularly. Go to the Daily Prayer section of our website.

Midweek Liturgy. We will be creating and sending out a midweek liturgy every Tuesday that people can use individually or in a small gathering. This liturgy will have prayers, Scripture readings, and songs. Go to the Midweek Liturgy section of our website.

Loving Neighbor. Loving God is always bound up with loving our neighbors. Here are some concrete things you can do:

Helping the hurting. We are taking steps to actively care for and provide some relief to needs within our congregation already brought to our attention. In addition, we have begun forming partnerships with local businesses and provide care for those on the margins who have been adversely affected by recent events. Dan & Renée Huie are also establishing a non-perishable food and household supply drop-off location at the Layne. We are partnering with local organizations to get this food delivered to seniors and homeless youth in our city. If you would like more information, want to volunteer, or have ideas for future partnerships, please contact Pastor Jason.

Watch a "Conversation on Race & the Church”

Read Pastor John’s letter to the congregation on racial justice

Hygiene & Social Distancing. Following the coronavirus health and safety protocols is a critical way that we exhibit a real love of neighbor by helping reduce the possibility of the spread of the virus.

Deacons Fund. Financial Support of our Relief Efforts. You can give directly to Serving the City Fund or our Deacons Fund.  Our Serving the City Fund goes directly to our efforts to serve the hurting and marginalized in our city. Our Deacons Fund exists to help those in our congregation and community who are facing unexpected financial need.  To give to the Serving the City Fund or Deacons Fund, you can give several ways: • For text, online, and app giving, specify "Serving the City" “Deacons Fund” in the “Fund” field. • For all other giving, Indicate "Serving the City" or “Deacons Fund” in the memo or comments field.

To request financial assistance during this time, please get in touch with our  deacons ([email protected]).

Giving to Grace. As mentioned above, now is a wonderful opportunity to give to either our Serving the City and/or Deacons Funds. At the same time, it is important to point out that our expenses haven’t significantly changed, and we still need folks to give generously and graciously to our General Fund. For more information, please visit the Giving section of our website.

A N N O U N C E M E N T S & U P C O M I N G E V E N T S Community Group Season Community Groups are a wonderful context for community here at Grace and for formation as a Christian, seeker or skeptic. Currently, most of our groups are at capacity, but there are a couple new groups forming, (in addition to a few open spots across the city). We also appreciate prayer for new hosts and leaders as our congregation continues to grow numerically and relationally. With some structures still finding definition we are not publishing new groups on the website, so if you are still looking to join a CG, please reach out to [email protected].

Men's Groups There are a number of men's groups that meet regularly for Bible study, prayer, and relationship building. Many are now meeting through video conferencing. If you are interested, please contact Eric DeMoney at [email protected].

Support for LGBT Individuals and Families, By: Soul Care Seattle @ The Layne Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] for details (some groups are now meeting through video conferencing.) Sexual Minority Group seeks to provide community for people in the church who experience non-heterosexual attractions or conflict with their gender. This ministry offers a safe place for people to ask questions, be understood, and do life together, within the context of a theologically conservative community, while seeking to understand who we are in relationship with God. Meeting Time: Second and Fourth Tuesday of each month, 7:00PM-9:00PM. Parents and Families Group provides support for family members of those who identify as LGBTQ, experience same-sex attraction, or experience gender dysphoria. A loved one’s journey in this area can be very painful and confusing for those who care deeply for the individual. This group offers support and encouragement as family members learn how to love well and grieve well the pain that they and their loved one may feel over this issue. Meeting Time: Third Wednesday of each month starting in September at 7:00PM-9:00PM

GraceLifeSeattle ListServ The GraceLifeSeattle Listserv is an email group designed to foster spontaneous generosity and hospitality among anyone and everyone who regularly attends Grace. The Listserv will allow anyone who signs up to send out an email to the larger group. It is designed to be used to let others know about a party you’d like to invite others to join, a game night you’d like to host, a request to borrow something, a post to give goods away, a need you’d like to ask for help from the larger group, etc. To join, email Sean.

Start our own Video Conferencing Group? If you would like to start a video conferencing prayer group, Bible study, support group or social club within our church community, please email Linn Haralson, or 206-718-3982. She can help assist in getting your message out to other members of our community and/or help you set up a video formatting tool.

Because of the Coronavirus, and the ever changing nature of our day to day lives at this present time, please contact the host of these events to see whether or not they are currently being continued. Please note that most groups have been updated and are now running through video conferencing.

Young Adult Group  As a young adult, it can be difficult to find friendship in Seattle. You've probably either just moved here, just got out of college, or you're stuck at home during a global pandemic and finding it impossible to meet people. If you consider yourself "young-ish" and "adult-ish", and are interested in growing community and breaking bread (outside and at a safe distance!) with others, we're going to start having socially distanced meals every other Sunday afternoon. For more details or questions, reach out to Brent and Phoebe Williams by emailing us at [email protected].

Update Your Contact Information Please contact Sean Hill, [email protected],  if you have a new mailing address, email address, or phone number. We want to be able to connect with you in other ways while we are limited in seeing one another in person.

New Service Opportunity with YCG & Serving the City YCG is launching a new service opportunity to support local artists in the Seattle area this Summer.  For the next 8 weeks, our Youth Community Group will work synergistically with four local artists to create a small and thoughtful way for our congregation to support their craft. Our Sunday meetings will be aimed at prayerfully setting up a way to enjoy and support our four friends. Please encourage your teens to participate and join us this Sunday! Questions?  Email Foxy Davison, [email protected]

Meals Ministry We serve Grace community members with food delivery in case of short-term needs, such as injuries, illnesses, and new children. Volunteers are added to an email list and asked to serve as they are able when needs arise. Currently additional volunteers are needed to help serve the community in this practical way. Contact: Rebecca Ifland [email protected]

Weekly Serving Opportunity with First AME Church F.A.M.E. Church, (First African Methodist Episcopal), on 14th and Pine is holding a weekly food giveaway on Fridays at 12pm.  Pastor Carey Anderson and Sister Denise Williams have reached out to us for two reasons:  (1) If anyone needs food and non-perishables to please come and take advantage of their weekly distribution, (2) F.A.M.E. could use no more than 2 volunteers from Grace every Friday to help with the giveaway.  There is no driving or transporting food involved, but simply distributing food from their food pantry, (within social distancing protocols).  This is a wonderful way to strengthen our relationship with F.A.M.E. and serve our city during this critical time.  If you would like more details and are interested in volunteering, please email Pastor Jason at [email protected].

Lifelong Grace Seattle delivers pre-made meals once a week to individuals living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and/or other chronic diseases. If you would like more information or would like to be part of the delivery team, email Paige Lively at [email protected].

Deacons Fund Our Deacons Fund exists to help those in our congregation and community who are facing unexpected financial need. This is an incredible way to lovingly and sacrificially support those whose lives have been impacted by difficult life circumstances. To give to our Deacons fund, go to the Giving section of our website. To request financial assistance during this time, please get in touch with our deacons ([email protected]).
