Epiphany brings us to the end of the Christmas cycle, completing the great rhythm ofexpectation and fulfillment that defines this period of time. It also points to the beginning of Christ’s manifestation to the world, a ministry that not onlyhappened in the first century but happens now within the church andwithin us as we travel through the unfolding of the paschal mystery of the liturgical year.

THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATIONwords: Samuel J. Stone (1866), ed. Nils H. Jonsson (2012)music: Brian Moss (1996)

The Church’s one foundationIs Jesus Christ her Lord. She is his new creationBy water and the Word. From heav’n he came and sought herTo be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought herAnd for her life he died.

Elect from every nation,Yet one o’er all the earth; Her charter of salvation,One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses,Partakes one holy food; And to one hope she presses,With every grace endued.

The Church shall never perish! Her dear Lord — to defend,To guide, sustain, and cherish —Is with her to the end.Though there be those who hate her,And false sons in her pale,Against both foe and traitorShe ever shall prevail.

In toil and tribulation,And tumult of her war,She waits the consummationOf peace forevermore;Till, with the vision glorious,Her longing eyes are blessed,And the great Church victoriousShall be the Church at rest.

PRAYER OF ADORATION

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT Ephesians 2:8

Minister : By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. This is the good news.

People: Thanks be to God!

SILENT CONFESSION

RenewalCALL TO CONFESSION Isaiah 30:15; 18

In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

CONFESSION OF SIN

Almighty God, you despise nothing you have made, and you forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts, that, truly repenting of our sins and acknowledging ourbrokenness, we may obtain from you, the God of all mercy, fullpardon and forgiveness, through your Son, Jesus Christ, ourRedeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

I will sing, sing a new song.I will sing, sing a new song.I will sing, sing a new song to the Lord.

CommitmentTHE PEACE OF GOD

Minister: May the peace of Christ be with you!

People: And also with you!3

DOXOLOGY

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,In heav’n above and here below.Praise God the Father and the Son!Praise God the Spirit, three in one!

3 Take this time to remind each other that Christ brings peace to the world by saying, “May the peace of Christ be with you!” You can reply by saying, “And also with you!” This is also a great time to go grab some coffee. There are “sermon boards” in the back for the children.

PRESENTING TO GOD OUR GIFTS AND OFFERINGSThe offering is a way for Christians to support the mission and ministry of the church. Christians offer a sacrificial portion of their resources – time, talents, and possessions – as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. While many at Redeemer make their regular contributions through the mail or by auto-mated bill pay, offerings are a part of our worship service as an opportunity for the regular, proportionate and generous giving of the resources God has given us.

SCRIPTURE READING II CHRONICLES 33:13; JAMES 4:6-8II Chronicles 33:13 And when he prayed to him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back toJerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God. James 4: 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 7 Submityourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord!

People: Thanks be to God!

CommunionGUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNIONCommunion, also called The Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and with their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people, the church.

THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS INDEEDwords: William Gadsby (1814)music: Benj Pocta (2005)

The gospel is good news indeed to sinners deep in debt; The man who has no works to plead will thankful be for it.To know that - when he’s nought to pay - his debts are all dischargedWill make him, blooming, look as May, and set his soul at large.

No news can be compared with this to men, oppressed with sin,Who know what legal bondage is, and labor but in vain.Freedom from sin and Satan’s chains - and legal toil as well -The gospel sweetly now proclaims, which tidings suit them well.

How gladly does the pris’ner hear what gospel has to tell!’Tis perfect love that casts out fear and brings him from his cell. The man that feels his guilt abound, and knows himself unclean,Will find the gospel’s joyful sound is welcome news to him.

PRAYERS DURING COMMUNIONBelow are listed three communion prayers. Please take this time to meditate on the love of God for you in Christ with one of the prayers listed.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth: God, if you are real and you care about me, please show up in my life. Give me understanding of mind and experience of heart to know who you are, who I am, and what life in this world is about. If Jesus is “the way the truth and the life,” then I need you to persuade me. If it is true that ”Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again,” then give me faith. Amen.

Prayer of Belief:

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment:Lord Jesus, you have called us to be poor in spirit, meek, hungry and thirsty for righteousness, merciful, and pure in heart. Grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my needs and turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the Bread of Life. Enable me to love you with my whole heart and love myneighbors as myself. Amen.
