Sabbath: God’s Rest, Our Rest Winter 2016

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10

Busy is the new popular.

We have a love/hate relationship with being busy. We chafe against the confines of our overloaded schedules. We think of friends we would love to get together with, but then we sigh after we check our calendars. We could probably squeeze them in…next month.

At the same time, if we’re not as frenetically busy as we think we should be, we can begin to feel lazy and ashamed. If we reduce our pace at all, surely that would mean we are tumbling towards lives of sloth. The voice within often prevents us from slowing down. In addition, many of us secretly fear that if we took our foot off the accelerator at all, our lives would simply spin out of control.

So, we find ourselves trapped. We hate being so busy, but we don’t have the freedom to do anything about it.

In this predicament we find ourselves in, the Sabbath is God’s great gift to us. It is an invitation―more accurately, it is a command―from God to stop. In fact, the word “Sabbath” actually means to stop. On the Sabbath, we stop, exhale, celebrate, and receive new life from God. This weekly rest is to become a foundational and satisfying rhythm for our lives.

But, Sabbath is significantly more than a useful weekly practice that enables us to get some much-needed rest. The Sabbath is an invitation for us “enter into God’s rest”. It is an opportunity for us to rejoice in and receive what God has done for us―both in creation and in salvation.

In other words, Sabbath is both a practice that shapes our weekly rhythms and a vital disposition of our hearts. Sabbath is a grace-filled and Christ-centered way of being in the world.

Let us worship!

F O R R E F L E C T I O N

Ev’ry day you fight Like you’re Running out of time Like you’re Running out of time Are you Running out of time?

How do you write like tomorrow won’t arrive? How do you write like you need it to survive? How do you write ev’ry second you’re alive? Ev’ry second you’re alive? Ev’ry second you’re alive?

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Non-Stop, from Hamilton

A person who feels inclined to work seven days a week should examine what God he or she worships. God is that ‘to which your heart clings and entrusts itself.’ Those who find their security and significant in Mammon or professionalism find community worship on the first day of the week a burden.

Bruce Waltke, Genesis: A Commentary

The progression from ceasing to resting underscores the basic movement from idolatry to faith. First we discover all the deception and falsehood of the securities offered by the world, and, with repentance, we cease to trust them. This includes especially all of our efforts to make our own way or to save ourselves. Then we learn that God has done all the work of redemption for us and that he continues to work through us. We learn, by faith, to rest in his grace.

Marva Dawn, Keeping the Sabbath Wholly: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, Feasting

The lie the taskmasters want you to swallow is that you cannot rest until your work's all done, and done better than you're currently doing it. But the truth is, the work's never done, and never done quite right. It's always more than you can finish and less than you had hoped for.

So what? Get this straight: the rest of God―the rest God gladly gives so that we might discover that part of God we’re missing―is not a reward for finishing. It’s not a bonus for work well done.

It’s sheer gift. It is a stop-work over in the midst of work that’s never complete, never polished. Sabbath is not the break we’re allotted at the end of completing all our tasks and chores, the fulfillment of all our obligations. It’s the rest we take smack-dab in the middle of them, without apology, without guilt, and for no better reason than God told us we could.

L E C T I O S A C R A Exodus 6:2-8; Mark 10:45

God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.’”

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Confession of sin happens within the context of

relationship, both with God and each other. We confess

together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us

himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for

mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

What can wash away our sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

The blood of Christ Jesus is poured for our guilt. The blood of Christ Jesus is poured for our cleansing.

The cross of Christ Jesus is raised for our pardon. The cross of Christ Jesus is raised for our healing.

The cross is the strength of the weak. The cross is the peace of the world.

May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 71:1-6, 12-24

In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you.

O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! May my accusers be put to shame and consumed; with scorn and disgrace may they be covered who seek my hurt. But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you? You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again.

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray,

using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be

pauses for reflection.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

P R A Y E R F O R M A T U R I T Y Adapted from Colossians 1:9-14

Father in heaven we give thanks to you. For you have brought us into your family. You have qualified us to share in the inheritance of your people— the saints who dwell in the light. You have rescued us from our sins, the assaults of the world, and from the evil one. You have delivered us out of the domain of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

We stand before you with great confidence, Because, in Christ, you have redeemed us-- you have forgiven our sins. Thank you, Father, for your amazing grace.

(silent prayers of thanksgiving)

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am

weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but

through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my

debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life.

Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from

my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Give us depth of understanding: give us profound spiritual wisdom and insight. Cause this wisdom and knowledge to change our lives: help us walk in a manner worthy of you. Cause us to live for you, not for ourselves: help us to be fully pleasing to you. Make our lives a source of blessing: help us bear fruit for you and continue to grow in you.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

Prayer for Receiving Communion

Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life

and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew

me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I

come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for

me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living

sacrifice. Amen.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients:

organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at

the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then

proceed through the line.

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. Contact: Debbie Smith [email protected]

S E R M O N T E X T

Deuteronomy 5:12-15

[12] “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. [13] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [14] but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. [15] You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
