ORDINANCES FOR MASTER OF COMMERCE

(HONOURS SCHOOL - FIVE YEAR INTEGRATED COURSE)

1. M.Com.(Hons. School -FYIC) an integrated course for Master Degree in Commerce (Honours School), will be run by Department of Commerce, Punjabi University, Patiala. The duration of course shall be divided into five academic years. Each year shall be divided into two semesters. The degree of B.Com. (Hons. School) shall be awarded to all the students, who shall pass the first three years of the course.

2. The admission to M.Com. (Hons. School -FYIC) Ist Semester shall be open to any person who has obtained 50% (45% in the case of SC/ST) marks in aggregate in plus two examination (Senior Secondary System) in any group from the Punjab School Education Board/C.B.S.E./I.C.S.E. or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by the Punjabi University, Patiala

3. (a) There shall be University examination at the end of each semester. The

examination for the first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth semesters shall ordinarily be held in the month of November/December and for the second, fourth, sixth, eighth and Tenth semesters in the month of April/May, or on such dates as may be fixed by the University.

(b) The amount of admission fee to be paid by a candidate per semester for

the external examinations shall be as prescribed from time to time. (c) Last date by which the admission forms and fee for the external

examinations must reach the Registrar shall be as follows:

* No examination form will be accepted after this date. 4. The first semester examination shall be open to a regular student who:

(i) has been on the rolls of the University Department during the first semester.

(ii) has attended not less than 75% of the lectures, seminars and case discussions etc. and

(iii) bears a good moral character.

5. The second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth semester

examinations shall be open to a regular student who: (i) has been on the rolls of the University Department during the second,

third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth semester as the case may be:

(ii) has attended not less than 75% of the lectures , seminars, and case discussions etc.

(iii) has passed the first or second or third, or fourth, or fifth or sixth, or seventh or eighth, or ninth semester examination respectively or is covered under re-appear ordinances.

(iv) The candidate who passed Part-I (1st and 2nd Semesters), Part-II (3rd and 4th semesters), Part-III (5th and 6th Semesters), Part-IV (7th and 8th Semesters) and Part-V (9th and 10th Semesters) must take the Part-III, Part IV and Part-V respectively within three years of his/her passing the lower part.

6. The assessment in all semesters of M.Com (Hons. School -FYIC) will be 30%

internal and 70% external for each paper. The minimum number of marks required to pass in a paper shall be 35% in external Examination and 35% in aggregate of internal assessment and external examination in each paper. There is no pass percentage for internal part of the assessment. If a candidate fails to secure the requisite 35% marks in aggregate in any paper(s), he/she shall be placed under re-appear in that paper(s), such a candidate would carry the internal assessment marks secured by him for his reappear examination.

7. The result for the internal examinations to be conducted by the department shall be conveyed to the students/examinations branch by the Head of the Department as per prescribed schedule.

4. If considered necessary a member can be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the recommendations of Dean of the Faculty concerned.

8. Subject to fulfillment of requirement of attendances and these ordiances there will

be no condition of passing papers for promotion from odd semester to even semester in an Academic Session.

(i) To qualify for admission to 2nd year of the Course, the candidate must

have passed 50% of total papers of the two semesters of the Ist year. Similarly to qualify for admission to 3rd year of the course, the candidate should have passed 50% of total papers of four semesters of the earlier two years. To qualify for admission to 4th year and 5th year of the course, the candidate should have passed 50% of total papers of all the lower semesters.

(ii) A candidate placed under reappear in any paper, will be allowed two

chances to clear the reappear, which shall be availed within consecutive two years/chances i.e. to pass in a paper, the candidate will have a total of three chances, one as regular student and two as reappear candidate.

(iii) The examination to reappear papers of odd semester will be held with regular examination of the odd semester and reappear examination of the even semester will be held with regular examination of even semester. But if a candidate is placed under reappear in the last semester of the course, he will be provided chance to pass the reappear with the examination of the next semester, provided his reappear of lower semester does not go beyond next semester.

(iv) Provided that every candidate should qualify all the papers prescribed for

Part-1 (first and second semesters), Part-II (third and fourth semesters), Part-III (fifth and sixth semesters), Part-IV (seventh and eighth semesters) and Part-V (ninth and tenth semesters), as the case may be, within three years of joining the respective part of the course. Provided further that every candidate shall complete the whole course within a period of seven years of joining the first semester.

9. Every candidate shall be examined in the subject according to the latest syllabi

and course outlines prescribed for them by the University from time to time. 10. The shortage in the attendance of lectures by candidates will be condoned as per

university rules made by university from time to time. 11. The medium of instructions shall be English.

12. Viva-voce examination shall be conducted by a committee consisting of the following.

1. Two external experts 2. One internal examiner (to be nominated by the Head of the Department) 3. Head of the Department OR His nominee. The quorum of Committee meeting would comprise one external examiner and

one internal examiner. 13. As soon as possible after the completion of each semester, the Registrar shall

publish a list of successful candidates showing their result. Each candidate shall be supplied with a card containing his/her details of marks.

14. A candidate who qualifies all the papers prescribed for the first six semester

shall be awarded the degree of B.Com (Hons. School) stating in division determined as under.

(a) Those who obtain 75% or more of the total aggregate marks in first six semesters

taken together shall be declared to have passed the examination with the distinction and those who obtain 60% or more of the total aggregate marks shall be placed in First Division, those who obtain 50% of more of the total aggregate marks shall be placed in Second Division and those who obtain less than 50% of the total aggregate marks shall be placed in Third Division.

(b) A candidate who qualifies all the papers prescribed for the ten semesters shall be awarded the degree of M.Com. (Hons. School -FYIC) stating in division determined as under. Those who obtain 75% or more of the total aggregate marks in ten semesters taken together shall be declared to have passed the examination with the distinction and those who obtain 60% or more of the total aggregate marks shall be place in First Division, those who obtain 50% or more of the total aggregate marks shall be placed in Second Division and those who obtain less than 50% of the total aggregate marks shall be placed in Third Division.

(c) Every candidate shall be issued a Detailed-Marks Card indicating his/her result & detail of marks semester wise in the subject offered. The total marks of each of the lower examination shall be shown in the Detail Marks Card for succeeding examinations. The marks secured by the candidate in internal assessment and external examination will be shown separately. Each Successful candidate shall receive B. Com. (Hons. School) and M.Com. (Hons.School -FYIC) degrees stating the division obtained by him.

15. The grace marks shall be allowed according to general ordinances relating to "Award of grace" marks.

16. The candidates who have successfully completed the degree but secured less

than 60% marks will be allowed one chance to appear again for the purpose of

improving his/her performance within two years from passing the examination

in the first instance for this purpose, he/she may appear in a maximum of 1/3 of

total theory papers in all parts of the course (but not exceeding two papers in one

semester and three papers in one part of the course). Every candidate shall

appear in accordance with the syllabi prescribed for that examination.

17. Candidates who have passed their Matriculation examination from a School

located outside the State of Punjab may be allowed to take up the subject of gzikph

bkIwh (w[ZYbk frnkB) (Punjabi Compulsory (Elementary Knowledge)) in lieu of

Functional Punjabi.

(i) Candidates who have passed their Matriculation examination from a School

located in the State of Punjab will not be allowed to take up the subject of

gzikph bkIwh (w[ZYbk frnkB) in lieu of Functional Punjabi at the graduate level.

This clause will not apply to students covered by clause No. (ii) given below.

(ii) Children of Defence personnel/Para military personnel (serving as will as

retired) will be allowed to take up the subject of gzikph bkIwh (w[ZYbk frnkB)

provided the father or the mother/guardian (in case father is deceased) of the

candidate gives an affidavit that the Candidate has not studied Punjabi at the

School Level.

18. A candidate who does not clear all the papers in first attempt of B.Com. (Hons. School) examination in three years and M.Com. (Hons. School-FYIC) examination in five years shall not be eligible for a prize or medal in that course.

Joint Stock Company: meaning, characteristics, advantages, kinds of companies, difference between public and private companies, promotion of a company, stages of promotion and promoters.

From traditional commerce to e-commerce: concept of e-commerce. Electronic verses traditional commerce, benefits of e-commerce to organization, customers and society. Introduction to various models of e- commerce.

UNIT-I

Data Processing concepts: Meaning and purpose of data processing, Data Information, Source, documents, data input, data manipulation, output of information, data storage, file creation, accessing, manipulation and maintenance of file, generation of sequential, indexed sequential and direct file organization with their advantages and disadvantages. Direct processing, batch, online and real time.

DBMS Components: Data Definition Language, Data Manipulation Language, Query Language, Report Generators, Application Generators, User Interface, File Manager, Database Manager, Database Administrator, Data Dictionary. Advantages and Disadvantages of DBMS:

Financial analysis using MS Excel: spread sheets; Use of spreadsheets, screen display, call reference, entering data, formatting cells in worksheets/ printing worksheets/ creation of work sheets for different modules of financial analysis.

Data handling: Data sorting, filtering data, using, sorting and filtering data for certain accounting conditions.

MS Access: Using Access to create accounting data, modify entries and generation of trial balance, profit and loss statements and balance sheets

UNIT-II Accounting Packages: Computerized Accounting- Meaning and Features-

Advantages and disadvantages-Computerized vs. Manual Accounting-Creating of Company-Grouping of accounts creation accounts and inventory-Entering Transactions: Vouchers-Types-Numbering-Deleting and Editing Vouchers-Opening and Closing balances Stock Valuation.

Reports: Petty Cash Book-Trial Balance- Profit and Loss Account- Balance Sheet- Group wise-Account wise-Data Range Reports- Preparation of Departmental Accounts- Preparation of Bank Accounts- Bank Reconciliation Statement-Stock Reports- Budget Variance Reports-Transactions list Accounts list.
