MARTHA, MARTHA We are blessed today with stories about relationships—human and divine—and the joys and responsibilities that come along with them. They are also stories about justice. Our Gospel tells the familiar story of overly anxious Martha complaining to Jesus about her sister, Mary, who is not helping her with her hospitality responsibilities but is sitting at Jesus’ feet. Can’t you just imagine Jesus between these two righteous women disciples? Jesus’ answer to Martha—that the actions of her seemingly lazy sister are actually OK—hardly seems fair. As we will show later, caring about the responsibilities that come with treating others well brings rewards, but there is a difference in how one approaches the task.

THOSE WHO DO JUSTICE Psalm 15 describes the life of justice and the reward of joy in God’s presence. We know that justice always involves service. Can we find joy in service, perhaps even in suffering? Saint Paul writes to the Colossians that his life of suffering service to them and to the other churches is a source of joy to him. His relationship with them, although filled with affliction, is its own reward, as he brings people into relationship with Jesus Christ. Abraham and Sarah, the righteous elderly couple of the Old Testament, are emblematic of this kind of relationship. Abraham welcomes “strangers” with eager hospitality, not knowing that his visitors are divine messengers, even the Holy One of Israel! His spouse, Sarah, does all she can to aid Abraham in making their guests comfortable and welcome. In return for their generous hospitality, the childless aged couple are rewarded with a blessing—a son, Isaac. How do they differ from Martha, though? Martha allows her duties and service to overwhelm her with anxiety. Abraham fairly leaps for joy to be of service to his guests. If you are a Martha, the lesson is to keep serving but find the joy that gives true meaning to your service.

NOTES FROM THE RECTORY:

MARTA, MARTA Estamos bendecidos hoy con historias acerca de relaciones, humanas y divinas, y las alegrías y responsabilidades que vienen con ellas. También hay historias acerca de justicia. Nuestro Evangelio nos cuenta la historia familiar de Marta, demasiado preocupada, quejándose con Jesús de su hermana María, quien no la ayuda con las responsabilidades de ser hospitalaria; pues está sentada a los pies de Jesús. ¿No te puedes imaginar a Jesús en medio de estas dos mujeres discípulas de Jesús? La respuesta a Marta, que el comportamiento de su hermana aparentemente perezosa está bien, difícilmente parece justo. Como mostraremos más adelante, atender las responsabilidades que vienen al tratar a los demás bien conlleva una retribución, pero hay una diferencia en cómo uno atiende ese deber.

AQUELLOS QUE PROCURAN LA JUSTICIA

El Salmo 15 describe la vida de la justicia y el reconocimiento de alegría en la presencia de Dios. Sabemos que la justicia siempre involucra el servicio. ¿Podemos encontrar alegría en el servicio, quizá aun cuando es sufrimiento? San Pablo escribe a los colosenses que esta vida de servicio sufriente a ellos y a otras iglesias es un origen de alegría para él. Su relación con ellos, aunque llena con aflicciones, es nuestra propia recompensa, porque él hace que las personas se relacionen con Jesucristo. Abraham y Sara, la pareja anciana y justa del Antiguo Testamento, son emblemáticos de este tipo de relación. Abraham recibe cordialmente a esos “extranjeros” con una hospitalidad entusiasta, sin saber que sus visitantes son enviados celestiales, ¡aun el Santo de Israel! Su esposa, Sara, quien hace todo lo que ella puede para ayudar a Abraham para hacer sentir a sus invitados cómodos y bienvenidos. A cambio de su generosa hospitalidad, la pareja anciana sin hijos es recompensada con una bendición, un hijo, Isaac. ¿En qué se diferencian de Marta? Marta permite que sus deberes y servicio la abrumen con preocupación. Abraham brinca de alegría por atender a sus invitados. Si tú fueras Marta, la lección es seguir sirviendo, pero encontrando alegría que le dé un verdadero significado a tu servicio.

and on Wednesday, July 24th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the rectory.

We require a copy of your child’s/children’s Baptismal and First Communion (if they have made their First Communion) certificate when you register. We also require that your first payment be made when you register. The first payment for a family with one child in the program is $75. For two children from the same family the first payment is $100 and for three or more in the same family the first payment is $125. Your balance will then be payable in 5 equal payments over a period of five months beginning in October. NO REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT CERTIFICATES OR PROPER PAYMENT. Religious Education Begins Wednesday, August 28, 2019 The first night of Religious Education is Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at 6:00 pm in Church. All students and at least one parent are required to attend. At this meeting you will receive the RE Handbook, the RE calendar and the first RE Newsletter. If your RE balance is paid in full by August 28, you will receive a 10% discount on your tuition!

Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday  (English) or  1st  Thursday  (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.   

MARRIAGES: Arrangements  should  be made  at  least  4 months  in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation  and  instruction.  Contact  the Rectory  for an appointment.  

CONVERTS:  RCIA The Rite of Christian  Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception  into  the  Church  at  the  Easter  Vigil  (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.  

COMMUNION CALLS: Please call  the Rectory  to arrange  for Communion  to be brought to the sick.  

SICK CALLS: For  confession,  anointing  of  the  sick  or  in  any emergency, please call the Rectory.
