FIRST READING Jeremiah 1:4-9
The word of the Lord came to me thus:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.
“Ah, Lord God!” I said, “I know not how to speak: I am too young.”
But the Lord answered me, Say not, “I am to young.”
To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.
Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.
Then the Lord extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, See, I
place my words in your mouth! The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 40
SECOND READING Acts 6: 1-7b
As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained
against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected
in the daily distribution.
So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said,
“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at
table.
Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men,
filled with the Spirit and wisdom,
whom we shall appoint to this task,
whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word.”
The proposal was acceptable to the whole community,
so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas,
and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
They presented these men to the Apostles
who prayed and laid hands on them.
The word of God continued to spread,
and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Please stand.
ALLELUIA Luke 4:18
The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim
liberty to captives.
GOSPEL John 12:24-26
The Lord be with you.
And with your Spirit A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord Jesus answered Andrew and Philip, saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it,
and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.
Please, be seated.

OFFERTORY MOTET “The Servant Song”
Richard Gillard (1953-)
Will you let me be your servant, I will hold the Christ-light for you
Let me be as Christ to you; In the night-time of your fear;
Pray that I may have the grace to I will hold my hand out to you,
Let you be my servant, too. Speak the peace you long to hear.
We are pilgrims on a journey, I will weep when you are weeping;
We are trav'lers on the road; When you laugh I’ll laugh with you.
We are here to help each other I will share your joy and sorrow
Walk the mile and bear the load. ‘Til we’ve seen this journey through.

We shall find such harmony,
Born of all we've known together
Of Christ's love and agony.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
With great anticipation and humility, we join the college of Permanent Deacons
with the prayers and support of so many faithful people. We feel blessed and
grateful to many, however we wish to acknowledge the following:
The Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia, Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, for
accepting us as humble servants, providing us pastoral leadership and presence,
and for shepherding us prayerfully, as he ordains his first class into the Order of
Deacon in the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We also thank Bishop Robert J.
Cunningham for his prayerful leadership and support in our formation.
For those of us who are married: to our wives, who without your support and
consent, we would not be deacons. We give praise and thanksgiving to Almighty
God for the gift of each of you in our lives. We now begin a new chapter in our
marriage, consecrated more fully, by the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ!
We express our deepest gratitude to our children, siblings, extended families, and
friends, for your support and flexibility throughout the formation process.
Father Louis Aiello and Deacon Tom Cuskey, Directors of the Deacon
Formation Program, who provided us visionary leadership with our
coursework and instructors to make us continually aware of our call to service as
a deacon. Although Father Lou is no longer with us on earth, we experience his
continual spirit and presence through his friend and brother, Deacon Tom, and
so many others whose lives he touched.
We are grateful for our gifted and dedicated instructors who have selflessly of
their time and talent. By your words and actions, we have witnessed the face of
God in each of you.
We thank the faith communities at Holy Cross and Christ the King parishes, who
generously hosted our classes throughout our formation process.
Lastly, to our pastors and clergy, sisters and brothers in our home parishes, and
to all gathered with us today, who by your prayers and encouragement, have
strengthened us daily. We ask for your continued prayers as we begin our
ministry of Word, Altar, and Charity.
With gratitude and joy,
Deacons Jeffrey, Jim, Kirk, Peter, Matthew, Joseph, Larry, Thomas, Daniel,
George, Edward, Jim, Aleu, and John.
