WelcometotheProcess!

GreetingsinthenameofourLordJesusChrist.WearegratefulfortheworkyouhavedonethusfarindiscerningGod’scallonyourlife,particularlyregardingordainedministry.TheOrdinationPreparationTeam(OPT)andourBishoplookforwardtoworkingwithyou,yourRectorandyourhomeparishasthisprocesscontinues.Thediscernmentprocessisthesameforthosepursuingthevocationaldiaconateaswellasthepriesthood,thoughthepreparation(Formation)foreachoftheseorderswilldiffer.

Itisourhopethatthediscernmentprocessforordinationwillbeaseffectiveandefficientaspossible.Wehopethatateverystepyouknowexactlywhatyouneedtobedoingnexttokeepthingsmovingforward.ThisinformationpacketprovidesdetailsregardingtheprocessandoutlinestheresponsibilitiesandrequirementsofboththeAspirantsandtheirhomechurches.Ifatanytimeyouhavequestionsorconcerns,pleasecontacttheCanonforOrdinationPreparationortheCanontotheOrdinary.Alwaysfeelfreetotaketheinitiative.

Thediscernmentprocessworksalongthreetracks,orinthreespheres.Thefollowingchartwillhelpyouseewhoisorwillbeinvolvedalongtheway.

Therearethreepossibleoutcomesforthediscernmentprocess:

1. Acallingtoordainedministryisconfirmedandyoumoveforwardinthepreparationprocess.2. Acallingtoordainedministryisconfirmed,butmovingforwardintheprocessisdelayed.3. Acallingtoordainedministryisnotconfirmed,andworkcontinuesinyourhomeparishtodetermineGod’scall

onyourlife.

HereareafewexpectationswehaveoftheAspirant:

1. Inmostcases,Aspirantsmusthaveabachelor’sdegreefromanaccreditedcollegeoruniversity.2. Aspirantsmustbeinvolvedintheworship,education,witnessandministryofalocalcongregationthatisapart

oftheGulfAtlanticDiocese.Aspirantsshouldbeinvolvedlongenoughthattheclergyandcongregationcantestthesenseof“call”andcandeterminereadinessandsuitabilitytoenterthediscernmentprocess.Insomecases,withtheBishop’sapproval,anAspirantmaydothisdiscernmentintheirseminaryfieldeducationparish.

3. Aspirantsmustbeabletoarticulateboththeirspiritualjourney,showingapatternofgrowthanddevelopment,aswellasagraspoftheGospelsuchthattheycanshareitinaclearandcasualmanner.

4. Aspirantsmustacceptfullresponsibilityforthefinancialcoststhroughouttheprocess.Theremaybesomeassistancefromtheparishand/ortheDiocesetohelpwiththeexpenses.Thecostofthediscernmentprocessisestimatedtobeabout$1750-$2000,excludingtravelandcostsfortheologicaleducation(outlinedonpage11).

Thetimeneededtoprogressthroughtheprocesstowardordinationwillvarybyanindividual’scircumstances.

1. Asan“Aspirant,”thediscernmentworkwillhappenprimarilyinyourhomeparishwithyourRectorandaParishDiscernmentTeam(PDT).AsetofworkwillbeturnedintotheOrdinationPreparationTeam(OPT)whowillmeetwithyouforfurtherdiscernmentanddeterminationofnextsteps.Normally,theseinterviewsarescheduledonthethirdFridayorSaturdayinMarchandOctober.IftheBishop(onreceommendationoftheOPT)affirmsyoursenseofcalltoordainedministry,youwillbenamedaPostulant.InconsultationwiththeBishop,aplanwillbemadeforyourformationforordination.

2. Asa“Postulant,”theological,vocational,psychologicalandphysicalassessmentstakeplace,andtrainingforministrybegins(orcontinues,dependingonyourcircumstances).Thisisperhapsthegreatestvariableintermsofthetimeneededfortheprocess,dependingonanumberofthings,including:one’slife,family,andworkcircumstances,theologicaleducationschedule,spiritualformation,specificweaknessesorgrowthareastobeaddressedinmentoringorcounseling.

3. Asa“Candidate,”typicallytowardtheendofyourtraining,theOPTwillconducttrainingandassessmentofyourcompetency,asspecifiedbytheProvincialCanons.ThiswillnormallytakeplaceinJanuary,thoughprovisionwillbemadeforthisinthesummerifnecessary.AreviewofthewholeprocessandfinaldiscernmentwillhappenwiththeBishop,theOPTandtheStandingCommitteeoftheDiocese.

4. Finally,hentheBishopandtheStandinggrantformalconsenttoyourordination,youwillbenamedan“Ordinand,”andanordinationdateisgrantedanddeploymentissuesareaddressed.

BeassuredofourprayersthroughouttheprocessoffindingyouruniqueplaceinthebodyofChrist.Thisisanexcitingandsignificanttimeinyourlifeandweareprivilegedtobejourneyingwithyou,onestepatatime.

DiocesanPolicyforPeopleSeekingOrdination

I.BiblicalPrinciplesA.Ordainedministryisa“nobletask,”theseekingofwhichistobecommended(1Tim.3:1).B.Theprocessofdiscernmentandformationforordinationshouldnotbehasty,andthoseseekingordainedministryshouldbetested(1Tim.3:10;5:22).

II.PoliciesA.TheparishhastheprimaryresponsibilityfordiscerningwhomGodiscallingintoordainedministry.ThisresponsibilityincludesidentifyinggiftedpeoplewhoseleadershipwouldblessGod’speopleandtestingthecallofthosewhocomeforwardofferingthemselvesforordainedleadership.

1.TheRectorofaparishhastheresponsibilityofmakingacarefulinquiryintoanAspirant’ssuitabilityforordainedministry.2.WorkingwiththeRector,ateamoflaypeers,theParishDiscernmentTeam(PDT),willalsotestaperson’scall.3.Finally,theVestrymustconfirmtheworkofthePDTbysponsoringanAspirantinthediocesanprocess.

B.TheDiocese,likewise,hasaseriesofresponsibilitiesindiscerningGod’scallonthelivesofmenandwomenandinpreparingthemforordination.

1.TheDioceseconfirmstheworkoftheparish(Rector,PDT,andVestry)throughconversationswiththeBishopandthroughtheworkofboththeOrdinationPreparationTeam(OPT)andtheStandingCommittee.2.TheOPTalsoassessesthetraining/preparationneedsofpostulants.3.TheDiocese(theBishopinconversationwiththepostulantandwithinputfromOPTandthepostulant’sRector)determinesthetrainingpath.4.TheDiocese(theBishopandtheStandingCommitteewithinputfromOPT)assessesthecompetenceandreadinessofthepostulant(attheendofthetrainingprocess).5.TheDiocese(BishopwithapprovalfromStandingCommittee)ordains.

Rector/VicarInvolvement

DearRectors,WearegratefulthattheLordisusingyoutoraiseupthoseaspiringtoordainedministry.TheOrdinationPreparationProcessintheGulfAtlanticDiocesebeginswithyouandthemembersofyourparish.AsyouprayerfullydiscerneachAspirant’scallforministry,whetherordainedornot,weaskGodtoblessyouwithwisdomanddiscernment.IfyoudeterminethattheAspirantisnotcalledtoordainedministry,wetrustyouwillhelpthatindividualdiscoverhis/heruniqueplaceinthebodyofChrist.WeexpectthateachAspirantwillbeabletoclearlyarticulatethemessageoftheGospel.Forexample,inacasualsettingsuchasacoffeeshoporgrocerystore,ourexpectationisthattheywould“alwaysbereadytogiveanaccountforthehopethatisinthem,andwithgentlenessandrespect”(1Peter3:15).PleaseconsideraskinganAspiranttoteachtheCatechism.ThiscouldbeinaConfirmationclass,aNewcomers’class,orjusthavingthemfindafriendwhomtheycouldleadinastudyoftheCatechism.Also,weencourageyoutobeinvolvedinthepartoftheprocesswedescribeastheir“UniquePlaceintheBodyofChrist.”Thisincludesanexplorationofspiritualgifts,aswellaspassion,personality,experience,etc.andhowthesemayblendtogethertoguidethepersontowardtheiruniqueplaceintheBody.Insummaryform,hereiswhatyouasRectorneedtodo:

1. TheInitialExpectationisthattheaspirantisamemberofyourchurchandhasbeenaroundlongenoughforyoutoobservehis/hercharacter,ministry,leadership,servanthoodtotheextentthatyouarewillingandabletoconducta“CarefulInquiry’withtheindividual.

2. ContacttheCanonforOrdinationPreparationtodiscussyourroleintheprocess.3. BegintheprocessoftheCarefulInquiryuntilyouareabletofillouttheReportwithconfidenceand

thoroughness.WeexpectthisCarefulInquirynormallytotakeninemonthstoayear.Itisnotgoodenoughforyoutobeunsureofsomeone’ssuitabilityforordainedministryandsendthemalongintheprocess,hopingthattheywillbeturneddownonthediocesanlevel.Guidelinesforthisinquiry,alongwithquestionswehopeyouwillbeabletoansweraspartofthereportform,areattached.YoumaywanttoasktheAspiranttofirsttaketheLifewayOnlineAssessment(cf.topofpage8)inordertodiscussitwithhimorher.

4. Whencomplete,pleasesendyourReportofCarefulInquirytotheBishopviatheDiocesanOffice.5. AftertheAspirantmeetswiththeBishop,youwillformaParishDiscernmentTeam(PDT)whichwillthoroughly

explorewithyourAspiranthis/hercalltoministry.SeethesuggestedguidelinesandreportformforthePDT(seepages13-15).

a. TheParishDiscernmentTeamismadeupsolelyoflaymembersofthechurch.Workingundertheguidanceof,butrelativelyindependentlyof,theRector/Vicar,theyprovidethelayendorsementoftheaspirant.

b. EachPDTmembermustsignthesametheologicalstatementasthatoftheAspirant(seeAppendixB).c. AssignaPDTchairofyourchoice.Youshouldmeetinitiallywiththispersontoguidehim/herastowhat

itmeanstoleadthePDT,andbeavailableduringtheprocesstoencourageandadvisethechair.d. Ask4-6otherindividualstoserveonthePDT,themajorityofwhomwillbetheRector’schoice.

ThereisnotaspecificnumberofmeetingswiththePDT.Wewantthemtomeetlongenoughtobeabletogiveathoroughreport,whichweexpectusuallytotakearoundsixmonths.ForsomeAspirantsthatwilltakemoretimethanothers.ItistheBishop’ssuggestionthatthePDTchairreporttoyoufollowingeverymeetingtodeterminewhethertheirworkhasbeencompleted.

GuidelinesfortheParishDiscernmentTeamThetaskoftheParishDiscernmentTeam(PDT)istoassisttheRectorandVestryindiscernmentofGod’swillforAspirantswhofeelcalledtoordainedministry.Thisdiscernment,accomplishedinthecontextoftheAspirant’shomechurch,isofcriticalimportance.EitheryouwillaffirmtheAspirant’scallforordainedministryoryouwillnot.Youmayalsobeabletoaffirmacalltoordainedministryyetsensethatitisnottherighttime.Ifyouarenotabletoaffirmacalltoordination,itisourhopethatthePDTwillcontinuetoworkwiththeformerAspirantuntilyouhavehelpedhim/herfindtheuniqueplaceintheBodyofChristthattheLordhaspreparedinadvanceforthispersontodo(seeEphesians2:10).

Thetaskofdiscernmentistrulyanawesomeresponsibilityespeciallyasithasdirectimplicationsforfuturedecisionsofanother’slife.ThisworkshouldbeundertakenwithahumbleawarenessoftheprivilegeitistoparticipateinwhatGodisdoinginsomeoneelse’slife,andinthelifeofHisChurch.ThePDTisnotanadvocacygroup,norasupportgroup.Instead,itsgoalistohearfromtheLordaboutthefuturedirectionoftheAspirant’slifeandspeaktruthinlovethroughtheleadingoftheHolySpirit.

YourrecommendationwillbegivenconsiderationbytheVestryofyourparish,whoalongwiththeRector,willdecidewhetherornotapersonshouldcontinueintheprocesstowardordination.

ThecompositionofthePDT,includingdesignatingaChair,istheprerogativeoftheRector.AmajorityofthePDTwillbeoftheRector’schoosing.EachpersononthePDTwillsigntheTheologicalStatementthatourAspirantisaskedtosign(seeAppendixB).IftheAspirantisawoman,theBishopasksthatthePDTmembersbeopentotheordinationofwomenasthisisnotthearenaforhertohavetoaddressordefendthatissue.

TheAspirant,andhis/herspouseorfiancée,shouldbeinvitedtoattendsomeofthesessionswiththePDT.Duringthefirsttwotimestogether(orhoweverlongittakesyoutogetthere),thePDTshouldbeseekingtoformanunderstandingoftheAspirant’srelationshipwithGod,his/herdevotionallifeanddiscipline,andthedegreetowhichhe/shehasagoodunderstandingofworshipandwitness.ThelasthalfofyourworkfocusesontheAspirant’srelationshipswithothersandordainedministrypotential.YoumaychoosetobeginwiththeendinmindandusetheEvaluationFormquestionstoguideyourtimetogether.

ThePDTshouldbeawarethatthisworkisintenselypersonalfortheAspirantandwillbemosteffectivelyconductedinanatmosphereoftrustandrespect.PDTmemberswillassuretheAspirantoftheconfidentialnatureofthiswork,helptheAspirantgrowinhis/herselfunderstanding,wherehe/sheisgiftedandwheregraceneedstobesought.ThePDTmayrequesttheAspirantdevelopandcompleteaministryprojectintheparish,especiallyifhe/sheisnotyetdeeplyinvolvedinthelifeoftheparish.WithconcurrenceoftheRector,thePDTmayalsorequesttoreceivecopiesofthewrittenworktheAspirantisdoingfortheDiocese.

Consideringtheplaceofthedeaconorpriestasamodelforthecommunity,andasapictureofChrist’slovefortheChurch,theacceptanceofadivorcedpersonforHolyOrderswillbeaVERYrareoccurrence.Themanorwomanwhohasnotbeenabletofindreconciliationwiththecentralpersoninhis/herlifemaybehardpressedtoproclaimthistothoseunderhis/hercare.Christianshavebeentaughtthat,inthenewlifeinChrist,theoldthingshavepassed.IfadivorcetookplacepriortoapersonbecomingaChristian,thismaybeamitigatingcircumstance.ForanydivorcedpersonpursuingHolyOrders,theBishopmustapplytotheArchbishopforaPastoralException.

ARuleofLifeisasetofspiritualpracticesordisciplinesthatanindividualadoptsfordailylivinginorderto

nurtureaspiritualrelationshipwithGod.TheessenceofChristianityisarelationshipwiththelivingGodandtheRuleofLifeisintendedtonurturethatrelationship.Asinallrelationships,itincludestime,communication,andaction.ManyChristiansobserveelementsofaRuleofLifewithouteverhavingconsciouslyascribingtosuchaconcept:intakingtimeformorningdevotions,weeklyworship,andregulargiving.ButcovenantingwithGodtolivebyaspecificRuleofLifebringsanelementofintentionalityandaccountabilitytoourspiritualpractices.

Theterm"RuleofLife"isnottoimplyastrict,law-drivenwayoflife.“InShakespeareanEnglish,“theterm"rule"wasnotasynonymfor"regulation."Instead,it’smorecommonmeaningwasastraight-edge,fordrawinglinesandtakingmeasure.Inthatsense,a"RuleofLife"isatoolthatequipsustomaintainappropriateboundariesandtomeasureourprogress.”1“Therearemanytime-testedpracticesthatmightbeincorporatedintothepatternthatformsaRuleofLife:readingandmeditatingonScripture;prayingregularly;participationinthesacraments,especiallyEucharistandreconciliation;exercisingsacrificialself-giving;observingperiodsofsilence;andpracticinghospitality.Inadditiontobehaviors,attitudescanbebroughtunderaRuleofLife:responsetoauthority;acceptanceofthe"other";rejectionofgrumblingorcynicism;forgiveness;respectforothers.”2

AgoodplacetobeginindevelopingaRuleofLifeistoaccesswhereyoualreadyareinyourrelationshipwithGodandwithyourspiritualpractices.Prayerfullyandhonestlyaskyourself,“WhatarethethingsthatIdo(daily,weekly,monthly,andyearly)tonurturemyfaithandawarenessofGod’spresenceandpurposeinmylife?”Writethesedownanddeterminewhereyourareasofstrengthareandwherethereisroomforgrowth.Beholisticinyourapproach–examiningyourfamilytime,yourworktime,yourfreetimeandyourprivatetime.

Informingyourruleoflife,itisimportanttoberealisticandconsidertheamountoftimeyouhavetodevoteto

specificpractices.Youdon’twanttobeoverzealousandsetyourselfupfordiscouragementorfailure.Atthesametime,it’salsoimportanttostretchyourselfbeyondwhereyoucurrentlyaresothattherewillbeopportunityforgrowth.Itwillalsobehelpfultowriteyourruleofdownanddateit,thenshareitwithsomeonewhowillmeetwithyouregularlyandholdyouaccountableforwhatyouhavecovenanted.AndrememberthatyourRuleofLifeisopentochangeasyourlifeandyourcircumstanceschange.Anannualreviewwillbehelpfultodetermineifthereareanychangesoradditionsthatneedtobemade.
