Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Karin Wares started out drawing farm animals as a child growing up on a sheep ranch in Northeastern Oregon. As a biology major she cultivated an interest in art as science communication, studying illustration at UC Santa Cruz. Her illustrations (from live specimens) have been published in the UCSC Campus Natural History Field Guide and on the cover of “Herpetologica”, published by The Herpetologist’s League, Inc.. In 2012 she began teaching herself to paint wildlife in watercolor and acrylics in order to enter Oregon’s Habitat Conservation Stamp art contest. She is now taking classes in oil painting. At that time, pheasants were everywhere and he made many memories hunting them. John began carving and drawing wildlife when he was about 9 years old. In the late 70’s, he began carving competition decorative decoys and within a few years, he was able to compete at the professional level in many competitions across the nation. At the same time, John became interested in the various state duck and trout stamp competitions. After finishing in the top 10 in many of them, he won the Kentucky trout stamp contest in 1991. Last year he finished third in the Oregon upland game bird stamp contest, before winning it in 2020.
