Managerial Skills in Economics • You must have the ability to organize and direct employees, as well as

lead them towards a common goal. • Motivational skills must be present. In order for your team to not get

discouraged, you must be able to motivate them with words of encouragement and give them deadlines.• At the end of the day, you must be able to accept the responsibility of

whatever is the outcome of your teams effort.

Interpersonal Skills in Economics• As a seller of a service, you must have the ability to interact and be

persuasive.• Another skill that is mandatory is you will be expected to sell

products, ideas, and services convincingly. • The ability to analyze and solve workplace conflicts can be tough at

times. You worry that you may come across as a brown noser, or worry about burning bridges, but in order to have a place to work that is both productive and peaceful, it is necessary.

Job Skills (Project Analyst)This is one of the options I can choose to pursue after my graduation. Here is what is required (Phase One Consulting Group, 2016):• Academic research• MS Office experience• Financial tracking and reporting• Report writing/ presentation development• Project management/team participation• Database development

Organizational Communication Broken Down Once I have had training and have effectively communicated my questions to my supervisors, I will need to communicate to:• My customers to make sure I cover all available information, and build

trust and respect.• My teammates in the project and other departments, such as

technical engineers.• Departments that provide resources to customers.

Research article- Knowledge Based Economy Summary• This research article took the statistics from different countries and

compared their degree of openness and their world power. • The person conducting the study found that in a workplace there is

(usually) no cost for sharing knowledge, but the sharing of knowledge is what the workplace runs on. • Secondly, they found that knowledge is what globalization is powered

by, and this creates an innovative economy that is in constant change. • Lastly, they found that human capital, incentives, and computer

knowledge increases the globalization and industrialization of countries.

Globalization- How can it affect my job?Globalization- businesses are no longer centered on Western nations, but are spread across the world.• Knowledge, information, and new technologies have increased the

needs for firms to increase research and development as well as increase information they can provide (Mohaghegh,2016), and this has stemmed from globalization.

Globalization Continued• Our book mentions the collapse of the housing market in 2007 that

had a ripple effect around the world (Miller, 2015). If we have trouble economically and our financial sector fails, so does our trade partners, which increases the need for economists to be aware of the market and communicate effectively.

Terrorism- Does it affect us as much as media says?• Terrorism creates fear and suspicion in countries. In order for a nation

to deal with terrorism, they must have exceptional tracking skills and understand how terrorist organizations work, which involves a lot of organizational communication (Miller, 2015).• Not only is military protection important, but so is public opinion;

after all, it is partially their tax dollars paying for the military. • If public viewpoints are not taken into consideration, this may cause a

high rate of migrants as we have seen in the US (post 9/11 and in other terrorist attacks).• Relating this to economics, people moving out of the country is less

workforce and tax dollars, which is never good.

Does climate hurt us or harm us?• It’s obvious what the climate change affects the most in the economy- the

crops! • According to the USDA in 2014, 9.3% of total US employment is agriculture

related (United States Department of Agriculture, 2015). If our climate changes (ex. drought) so it can no longer produce as many crops, this can raise the unemployment rate quite a bit.• In addition to agriculture harm, a climate change can also cause a loss in

tourism, mass migration/ security threats, increased environmental costs, lost productivity (especially labor jobs), and damage to infrastructure (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2011).

Changing demographics within the company Demographics- characteristics of a population such as age, race, income, education, etc. (Miller, 2015).We must consider changing demographics because they can influence productivity, communication, hierarchy, time off, etc.• Age will most likely definitely influence productivity because someone hired in at age 23 may

have less experience than someone that has been there for 10 years, therefore taking them longer to complete tasks.

• Communication can be influenced by age gaps, or even your ethnicity. Things can be perceived differently based on the time and place you grew up in.

• If your skills are higher, you may be promoted to a manager, which means sometimes seniority/expertise and hierarchy are related.

• If you are 65 or older in the workplace, we also have to take into consideration if you will take time off for health issues

Our Need for Structure• As our book explains, when you think about structure in the

workplace, not only do you think about hierarchy (who is in charge, who is the underdog), but community and team relationships (Miller, 2015). Everyone is a piece of the puzzle.• We must also think of our common goal, maybe in a government

career it could be budgeting for our nation or establishing a interest rate.• If we lack proper communication, it will be detrimental to the success

of our business, and we can lose our customers’ trust.

The biggest part- promoting change!In order to be a team member in any field, you need to think about how the world can promote change and make your job easier. I will look at this through the eyes of an economist!

Some Solutions to Our Complexity• Globalization is one thing that can be good or bad. Globalization can

bring us closer together with our trade partners, but can harm other nations if either our market or technology for creating goods fails. Closely woven connections with countries is the best way to solve this, and the more allies the better.• Terrorism is something that can’t be directly controlled my the

nation’s people, but as we know, we can elect government officials that do a good job with managing our nations relationships and allies so we don’t get attacked. When we are attacked we must piece our nation back together and make citizens feel safe.

We Can’t Do it AllThere are some “issues” we can not particularly fix, but we can lessen their effect on our business as a whole.• Changing demographics is a good example. We can’t fix who

immigrates to the country, the age of our population, or where people tend to live the most. We can, however, employ great managers who can adapt easily to changing workers and new ideas, as well as still inspire them to work and meet deadlines.• Climate change is another example. We can’t control our environment

besides making pollution laws. We can however adapt based on how it changes our workforce productivity and output.

ConclusionRegardless of your career, there is always communication happening whether it is with coworkers, with customers, or internationally. You must know how to communicate!Communication facilitates:• The sharing of ideas• Understanding differences• A successful project with deadlines met!• Happy customers!
