Part 1 Example

Paint StrippersThispast March break I spent rilY break updating my kitchen. I wanted to paint mycupboards, but they already had a varathane oil finish on them, so in order to prepare themfor paint, I needed to use a paint stripper. I read on the can that the precautions were to useit in a well-ventilated area, but because I have asthma, I decided to buy an organicrespirator. I am very happy I did after learning about the chemicals in paint stripper. One ofthe main chemicals is toluene, a common organic solvent. Toluene can cause drowsiness, dizziness and headache. If you are pregnant, breathing high amounts of toluene can causeharm to the unborn child, and is poisonous if swallowed. The benefit of using a toluene-based paint stripper is that the surface is cleaned and prepared for painting very quicklybecause the paint stripper evaporates and dries quickly. The risksof using toluene are themany health hazards mentioned above. If I did not have paint stripper, I would have toprepare materials for painting by sanding them by hand, which would take more time andenergy, but in the long run, would be safer.

I NOTE: You must have 5 different chemicals from the text section 2.4, or from the handout.

Part 2 Example (see newspaper article attached)

Britishtested poison gos on hundreds of Indian soldiers in 1930s

Thisarticle exposes National Archive documents from Britain that have revealed thathundreds of Indian Soldiers were exposed to mustard gas intentionally by British militaryscientists in the 1930's. Mustard gos, a commonly known chemical weapon, causes blisteringof the skin and lungs, causes blindness, cancer and death. Mustard gas's prper chemicalname is 1,1-thiobis(2-chloroethane), and has the formula C4HsCI2S.

Thisarticle portrays mustard gas as a dangerous chemical, and outlines how the Indiansoldiers who were exposed to mustard gas experienced severe burns, discomfort anddepression, as a result of the experiments. Mustard gas was commonly used in WWI aschemical warfare, and was developed by the Germans originally. It was highly effectivebecause it could penetrate any clothing or masks.
