celebration of this milestone will culminate at the 9th International Planters Conference 2019
(IPC 2019) on 15-17 July 2019, Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.
The theme, ‘The Plantation Industry: Charting the Future - Transforming People, Policies and
Processes’ will guide the discussions and topics of this year’s centenary conference which we
promise will be bigger, better and more exciting than ever before.
To give you a sense of what you can expect, we will be starting off the conference with a
Royal Address and official opening by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan of Perak Darul

Book. The book traces the story of the ISP, the oldest registered professional body in the
country and its contributions to the nation.
With your support, we hope to bring together 800 participants and exhibition visitors from
around the world. This will give both local and international participants the strategic
opportunity to interact and deliberate the many facets of the industry, especially the
challenges of the rapidly changing plantation business landscape. Conference participants
will also be privy to nearly 15 presentations from renowned experts.
A trade exhibition with 40 booths will be held throughout the two-day conference to provide
opportunities for delegates to explore new labour-saving machineries, state-of-the-art
equipment and products related to the plantation industry.
We warmly invite you to be part of this celebration and hope that you will join the industry
leaders, planters, plantation companies and others at this not-to-be-missed event. Do not

CAREY ISLAND
The story of Carey Island is a unique one; it started its life as an island but attached to the Malay Peninsula. It however
became detached when pirates of the Straits of Melaka used the inner river route to escape detection. Cutting up a
ditch to allow their boats to pass, the river current eventually saw the ditch becoming bigger. Teluk Gonjeng (Gonjeng
Bay) as it was known, then became an island, and was called Pulau Gonjeng (Gonjeng Island).
8 |Plantation Industry: Charting The Future
Transforming
It was the efforts of British entrepreneur, Edward Valentine Carey that saw to
the eviction of the pirates. With the reduction of pirate activities in the area,
Selangor trade boomed. The Sultan of Selangor then, Sultan Sir Alaeddin
Sulaiman Shah was pleased with this, and offered the good gentleman the
island as a reward. The Island became known as Carey Island in 1899. Carey
moved quickly to gauge the potential of what was largely a mangrove
swamp, and one that was 2 metres below sea level.
Deciding to develop it into a plantation area, he commissioned an earth bund system that stretched 130km. This
earned Carey Island the moniker “Little Holland”, in reference to its similarity to the Netherlands. The bund system
helped to nurture the indigenous plant nyireh batu, which the Mahmeri tribe – indigenous to the area – use for
wooden sculptures.

By 1906, the Island was ready for planting and the first crops planted in 1908 were rubber, coffee, lowland tea,
coconut and cocoa. A series of bungalows were also commissioned. The Careys eventually sold the plantations
in 1926 and left Malaya. But they left behind a thriving island which till today is abuzz with plantation activity.

The golf course and the facilities are set up to be capable of
hosting major professional tournaments. Yet, balance has
been struck to provide the amenity and playability that will
encourage amateurs, as well as incorporating elements that
will challenge the best of tournament professionals.
The course aims to become a favourite course for local and
international golfers, where guests will return again and
again, and going beyond that, hopefully help to introduce
new golfers to the game.
The course landscape is designed according to the “Colours
of The Forest” theme. More than 40 types of feature flowers
and trees adorn our 18-hole course, where each hole is
specifically given a distinct and unique look.
Our meticulous attention to detail in the preparation and
maintenance of the golf course is in line with the club’s
singular aspiration to become the leading destination, where
golfers come to experience great golf in beautiful and
stunning surroundings.
